Along the road from Kurunegala to Dambulla to visit the Dambulla Cave Temple. The busses in Sri Lanka are easy and cheap but I hired a tuk tuk in Kurunegala instead to stop along the way in local villages and take some photos of the scenery, which was rather lovely. The local price for tuk tuks is around 100 Rupees per kilometre so this 55 km trip cost 5,500 Rupees (around CDN $25). A few impressions from the first half-day hike my guide and I went on near Punakha. Our goal was to reach a four-story, pagoda-style stupa called Khamsum Yulley Namgyal (photo 4) in under two hours. . On the way to the top we passed by shrines, small temples, and pictures of the royal family (photo 1) who is highly respected in Bhutan. We also got to appreciate scenic nature during the hike. In general everything in Bhutan seemed so, so peaceful. 💚 . The stupa was built less than 20 years ago and therefore rather recently, however it was constructed in strict accordance with traditional teachings. It took the carpenters and sculptors several years to finish it. As with every place of worship in Bhutan, taking photos inside was not allowed, but let me tell you that the statues and paintings were very impressive. . Just three months after its first visit this year, the Chinese research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 03 is back at a Maldivian port on Friday (April 26). Local media outlet Adhadhu reported that the ship Xiang Yang Hong 03 was docked at the Thilafushi industrial island’s harbour on Friday morning. As per the report, the Maldivian government had not disclosed the return of the ship, even though it had issued a statement at the time of its first visit in February. It was first reported in January that Xiang Yang Hong 03 was on its way to the Maldives. This news was greeted with interest as it came within a few months of the new President Mohamed Muizzu winning the presidential elections and being sworn into office in November 2023. While Muizzu has denied being “pro-China”, his government is widely perceived to be friendlier to Beijing. His key campaign promise had been to ensure that Indian troops stationed in the Maldives to operate three aircraft for humanitarian sorties in the country should be withdrawn. After negotiations, India has now replaced the crews with civilians from a state aviation firm. The Maldives had also given a notice to India that it planned to terminate a bilateral agreement that allowed New Delhi to participate in hydrographic surveys of the Maldivian territorial waters. The Muizzu government got a big boost when the ruling coalition won three-fourths of the seats in the parliamentary election last week. The first docking of Xiang Yang Hong 03 this year took place on February 22 after “spending about a month near the boundary of the Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)”. After its port call, the ship had gone back to the borders of the Maldivian EEZ in early March, and is back again at the dock. “Therefore, Xiang Yang Hong 03 has been active inside or near Maldives’ territory since January,” said the news report. Their royal title "Nawab" was obtained from the then British Indian government. Prohibiting photography inside, there are a lot of luxurious goods and furnitures from the Britian and Europe, and even a huge dance hall to confirm their wealth and prosperity. #SAARCInsights: The first export shipment from the country in five years was dispatched to #Turkey via the #Herat- #Khaf railway. Officials at the Herat Railway Authority stated that there will be a daily train transporting import and export shipments between Iran and Afghanistan via the Herat-Khaf railway. This train carried over 1,100 tons of talc stone destined for the city of Bilecik. Mohammad Naseem Mohammadi, head of the Herat Railway, told TOLOnews : “For a period of one month, one train will travel daily from Afghanistan to Iran and vice versa. After a month, due to the increase in traders' goods, two trains will operate daily, and passenger services are also planned for the future.” The initiation of exports and imports through the Herat-Khaf railway is deemed beneficial for the country's economy. The private sector states that activating this route will enhance the process of exporting and importing commercial goods between Afghanistan and Iran, as well as European countries. Translator Neerja Mattoo tells us that Rupa Bhavani, also known as Alakheshwari or Saheb, “was born in a Kashmiri Brahmin family and was quite well-versed in Sanskrit and classical Persian literatures. Kashmir was ruled by the Mughals at the time and Persian was the official language and it influenced her vocabulary. Of significance is the fact that, like Lalded, she dialogued with prominent Hindu and Muslim mystics of the time like Rishi Peer, Mohammad Sadiq Qalandar and Baba Asraruddin Quadiri, prominent Sufis and rishis, who acknowledged her spiritual power. Her body, like Lalded’s, is said to have disappeared at her death.” . “She acknowledged Lalded and her father Madhav Dhar as her gurus. She is said to have been inclined towards a mystic quest from her childhood and her verses are a record of her spiritual journey. She studied both Kashmiri Saivism and Sufism. Soon after an unhappy marriage, she renounced the life of a householder, came back to her father’s house where she was venerated as a saint, and finally left home and journeyed upon a path in search of salvation.” . “Her vaakhs, in a Kashmiri redolent with Sanskrit and Persian vocabulary, are steeped in deep mystic thought that seems to progress towards a Sufi ideal of self-annihilation. The springs and secret grottoes associated with her mystic experiences are well-known to Kashmiris who venerate them as shrines. The moral and ethical instructions in her verses had a profound impact on Kashmiri Pandit society.” . “The main facts of her life are known, thanks to her father’s vision and belief in his daughter’s spiritual destiny and legacy, which led him to have all the events connected with her life and work to be properly documented.” . “Unlike most Kashmiri poetry, her vaakhs have never been sung, the form in which poems have been preserved in Kashmir’s oral tradition. Her vaakhs are the province of the ‘initiated’’, the verses generally being recited only at gatherings of her followers at special occasions such as the anniversary of her death.”

✨ Enrollment is now open for our next online course, PALI 200 | Pali Variations: Theory of an Imperfect Grammar taught by Dr. Aleix Ruiz-Falqués! 📚 One of the most important features of Pali grammar is variation. This variation manifests in a certain porosity of nominal and verbal paradigms. For instance, in Sanskrit there is only one form for the ablative singular of buddha, that is buddhāt, but in Pali you may have buddhā, buddhasmā, buddhamhā, buddhato. The verbal system, especially in the past tense, is similarly crowded with redundant forms—just as an example: there are more than thirty correct ways to say “I went” using the same verbal root. This causes a great deal of frustration in many students. But that may change if we understand the dynamics beneath this apparent randomness. In this course we are going to explore variation as the core of Pali grammar, we will problematize it, to see why it is there and why it is important. More specifically, we will focus on how classical grammarians deal with variation and exception, and we will compare that method with the modern approach of historical linguistics—just to discover that paradigms, in Pali, are very much in the eyes of the beholder. The goal of this course is to become more receptive to a type of linguistic discourses that is not closed and based on fixed paradigms—like Sanskrit—but rather open and diverse in nature. It therefore serves as a transition for students who have completed the 100 Pali courses and wish to read Pali texts in the 200 series. An individual’s actions, positive or negative, may be experienced immediately, later in their present life, or in a future life or lives. Innately embedded in this are principles of justice, equity and self-responsibility. -We believe in Ahimsa, the practice of love, genuine care, and compassion towards ALL living beings. This is non-injury in mind, speech, and action towards ANY creature. -There is no Satan, or Satan-equivalent. If there are demons, even these are created by God and destroyed by God. Day 20 - Hambantota ⚓️ We left Ella and drove 2.5 hours to Hambantota. 🚙 This wasn’t our original plan but we wanted to break up the drive a bit so we stayed the night in Amawin resort before making our way further along the south coast of Sri Lanka 🌊 Our visit was brief, but the importance of this district was reflected by its proximity to the major city port and vital shipping routes. 🚢 Hanbantota also has an international airport, making it a popular gateway to the south of the island. 🛩️ Our impression of Hambantota is that it’s very hot ☀️. In fact we hadn’t experienced heat like this since the first leg or our trip back in Negombo. Hambantota is the ideal place to stay if you’re planning on visiting national parks such as Yala, Bundala and Udawalawe. 🐘 Our main reason for not visiting a national park is the price and the need to hire a driver. 🚘 We’ve both visited national parks before so it wasn’t something that was very high on our list. HOWEVER we would highly recommend visiting these parks instead of going to the infamous Elephant Orphanage and similar “sanctuaries” as they are not as ethical as they advertise them to be (Do your research!) 💻 Our stay in Amawin was pleasant. It was a hotel/home stay hybrid and the family were very kind.
