Elliott smith Steven Paul Smith (August 6, 1969 – October 21, 2003), known as Elliott Smith, was an American musician and singer-songwriter. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska, raised primarily in Texas, and lived much of his life in Portland, Oregon, where he gained popularity. Smith’s primary instrument was the guitar, though he also played piano, clarinet, bass guitar, drums, and harmonica. He had a distinctive vocal style in his solo career after Heatmiser, characterized by his “whispery, spiderweb-thin delivery”,and often used multi-tracking to create vocal layers, textures, and harmonies that were usually finger picked and recorded with tape. After playing in the rock band Heatmiser for several years, Smith began his solo career in 1994, with releases on the independent record labels Cavity Search and Kill Rock Stars (KRS). In 1997, he signed a contract with DreamWorks Records, for which he recorded his final two albums.[6] Smith rose to mainstream prominence when his song “Miss Misery”—included in the soundtrack for the film Good Will Hunting (1997)—was nominated for the 1998 Academy Award for Best Original Song. Elliott Smith’s inspirations shaped his songwriting process and style. Although Elliott Smith may be gone physically, his musical legacy lives on through the many artists that he has influenced. Smith has influenced modern artists such as Phoebe Bridgers, Frank Ocean, and Clairo. "One of the really interesting stories I have about Steve is he was in a class called “Crime and Punishment” with me. We started by reading Dostoyevsky’s “Crime and Punishment” – it was sort of a criminal justice course taught by professor Lester Mazor, who was an attorney and one of the projects I did – we had something called “Divisions” and it was basically like a big term paper, you spent a semester working on these different projects and my project was studying prison overcrowding and there was a prison in Springfield, Massachusetts that was very overcrowded, to the point where the inmates were sleeping in hallways and there were cots in the gym and so many issues. I set up an arrangement to go down there and interview correctional officers and inmates and Elliott looked at me and said “I’d like to go with you” and I said “Really?”, you know i can’t imagine any of my friends wanting to go with me to this prison but i was just so happy that someone was going to go with me. He and I took a Peter Pan bus down to Springfield and spent the day at the prison. And I think – that was just the way he was. He just liked to experience anything, maybe that was the writer in him. He just looked at me like, “Well, hopefully, it’s the only time I’ll experience the inside of a prison!”. He just went down there and spent the day with me, and I was so glad to have somebody go with me – it wasn’t his project, it was mine! (He wanted to be interviewed for Plotz, but I told him that he had to be Jewish. “I have a lot of Jewish friends, and I use Yiddish a lot” he said). “It’s really frustrating at first. I had a friend who was also trying to learn to play guitar. We wanted to play AC/DC songs at that point. Eventually we got the pick-ups that fit in the sound holes, we had that and a little Peavey amp where you can turn up the saturation and it makes this really crappy distortion. It doesn’t really sound like AC/DC. It was a drag you know. It was like, we’re trying to have a real good time, we’ve got this acoustic guitar and this little tiny amp… so yeah, that didn’t work out so then we started to learn how to finger-pick. We learned ‘Amazing Grace’ and sort of, not really gospel songs, but those kinds of devotional numbers. We were just trying to learn how to finger pick, this was in Dallas, Texas, my family and his were both really religious. I’m the first man in my line to not be a preacher. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to realise the chances of getting anywhere by playing music are very small, not to mention my mum’s side of the family were all, not all the time, but were professional musicians of different sorts. So they were really against it because they had no money, like lower middle class, white trash Dallas. My grandfather was a preacher and played drums in Dixieland bands, his wife, my grandmother, was a singer, my mom was a singer for a little while when she was young. My brother made a record with somebody’s backing, some famous person’s backing band, that went nowhere. He ended up working for an oil company. It’s just depressing stories.
