Top 5 films so far, from left to right: #MonkeyMan #Challengers #LoveLiesBleeding #TheAmericanSocietyOfMagicalNegroes #LisaFrankenstein there are several wonderful movies on the horizon, too, so it’s an exciting year for innovation in #cinema I mean, I didn’t even include #Dune because I think the plot of that franchise is yawn-inducing even if the visuals are quite good, so I wouldn’t be surprised if technical aspects of the film wind up being nominated at awards season. Everything was technically beautiful, I simply didn’t connect to the story at all. Of the films released in the first four months of 2024, I do hope Monkey Man finds its way into awards season, and as for the other four I listed here, any of them could also get in, but the first third of the year does not usually see this many films even get into “the conversation.” *When* a movie is released tends to determine a lot of its awards impact, but there have been notable exceptions in #Oscars history. Being in the industry now, it will be fascinating to see how this plays out. I see at least three movies per month in cinemas, preferably four or five if I can find the time, and most people do not even go the cinema that many times in a whole year. Therefore, I hope to be a #maven with my opinion to help you decide which movies are really worth watching. Challengers *just opened this weekend,* I saw it on Thursday, the first possible day, so y’all can definitely still catch it in theaters if you are interested, or will wait a while till it’s available elsewhere. I think Monkey Man deserves to still be in theaters, but it looks like the market disagrees, so it’s probably already gone from your area, sadly, but be sure to catch it on whatever release it is available. My review was “Dev Patel’s Monkey Man is John Wick, but in India, like The White Tiger. And also like Taxi Driver. And also Parasite.” I wouldn’t want to give away anything else. It is easily the best release of 2024 so far, in my opinion, a stunning directorial debut from Patel. Also for your consideration: Love Lies Bleeding, The American Society of Magical Negroes, and Lisa Frankenstein. #alexkravitz
