Ça fait un moment que je parle de babka😉. Mais je n'ai jamais pris le temps de vous expliquer le pourquoi du comment. Tout commence par le livre de recettes de @babkazana que ma mère a acheté il y a plusieurs semaines à @librairielalinea . Quel magnifique début d'histoire🤣. Je l'avais regardé, salivé mais comme j'ai plusieurs années de déboires briochés à mon actif, je me suis dit, pas pour moi! Un jour - que j'avais tout ce qu'il fallait sous la main: un @kitchenaidfr tout neuf, de la viennoise bio du @moulindecolagne - je me suis dit BANCO! (qui a la référence?🤔) Je suis scrupuleusement les explications du livre (qui sont super bien faites) et là, miracle: la pâte pousse, tout est conforme à la recette, je les cuis et tadaaaa, c'est trop bon (sans me la péter 😇). Je les mets en vente et zou tout part et depuis c'est devenu la pâtisserie signature de la cuisine 😋 Bon ça c'est l'histoire des babka dans ma cuisine mais qu'en est-il de la babka dans l'Histoire tout court? Babka: contraction de babouchka qui veut dire grand-mère ou baba (mamie) en polonais. Les plis de la pâtisserie seraient une évocation des plis ronds des jupes traditionnelles des grand-mères polonaises. Cette pâtisserie a vu le jour au XVIe/XVIIe siècle en Pologne. La babka évolue en fonction des traditions culinaires et culturelles. Celle que je fais est celle de la pâtisserie yiddish que l'on trouvera entre autres à New York. Ce n'est pas tout à fait une brioche mais c'est une pâte levée qui sera ensuite étalée puis garnie bien souvent avec de la cannelle ou du chocolat. Un régal dans les 2 cas. What do the ghosts of history have to teach us about healing from the traumas of our future? This is a question I ask myself as I witness the ongoing atrocities in Gaza, settler-led pogroms in the West Bank, and footage of the October 7th attacks in Israel. For answers, I have sought out the wisdom of the “dybbuk”. In Jewish mystical tradition, dybbuks are wandering souls that possess living bodies to communicate messages from the dead. Although they are often misunderstood as demonic, discerning the difference between malevolent and harmful spirits is part of the process of healing them. My dybbuk, as featured in the photograph above, is a grieving ancestor who has returned to this world to confront me/us with this haunting question: What do the ghosts of history have to teach us about healing from the traumas of our future? Though her sign reads something different. It says in Yiddish: “Wherever we live, that’s our homeland.” It is a Bundist slogan that originated in Eastern Europe in the early 20th-century and has been repopularized by Jewish diasporists, non-zionists, and anti-zionists today. The photo was taken in my ancestor’s cemetery in Tarnow, Poland. As part of the fundraiser for the “Holy Names for Our Dybbuk” performance premiering in June, I am offering this limited-edition archival print for sale. All proceeds will go towards compensating my artistic collaborators. Link in my bio. This is the title page and endcover of the Haggadah belonging to Elias Olschwanger ("Reb Elias" in the Passover-themed picture book SHLEMIEL CROOKS), published in Koenigsberg, East Prussia. According to the catalogue of the National Library of Israel, the book was printed in 1868, and is kept in the rare books department of the library. During this hour-long workshop, Julie and Nessa will share stories about the dybbuk and introduce simple movement techniques inspired by Yiddish dance, as well as Jewish mystical rituals of exorcism. The workshop shares research from Weitz’s “Holy Names for Our Dybbuk,” a performance art project that reimagines a dybbuk exorcism as a movement-based ritual at sites of Jewish memory in Poland. Having relocated to the Iberian Peninsula at the start of World War I, Ballets Russes impresario Serge Diaghilev (1872-1929) chose Sonia and Robert Delaunay to reimagine the costumes and set for a new iteration of his production of Cléopâtre at the London Coliseum in 1918. Sonia Delaunay (1885–1979) was one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. “Know your rights!” was the theme of @yenjev1984 's Easter Seminar which took place in Budyšin/Bautzen, Germany, between 22nd-28th March. 🐣🌷 Co-hosted by #Sorbian youth organisation/Serbske młodźinske towarstwo @pawkojo, who introduced the participants to many Sorbian Easter traditions, music and dances. A space for exchange, networking and exchange of minority issues between young people all over Europe (and beyond), the workshops focused on activism within youth organisations for autochthonous, national, ethnic and linguistic minorities. Participants spent the week looking at minority documents, reflecting on their rights, and formulating their demands. YEN was happy to welcome their first participant from Aromanian NGO @tihe.skopje, alongside motivated activists from minoritised language communities including #Breton, #Valencian, #Basque, #Welsh, #Yiddish, and #BurgenlandCroatian, who presented their minority, culture, food, and stories at the Exchange Market.
