Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has sought to clear the air over misconceptions on the National Assembly and its operations. He spoke at the Distinguished Parliamentarians Lecture in Abuja, yesterday. The event was organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS). He revealed that the total salary of a senator is about N1.5 million and N1.3 million for a member House of Representatives. The average office running cost for a senator and a member of the House of Representatives is N13 million and N8 million. He pointed out that the budget of the National Assembly since 1999 has never gone above N150 billion, which accounts for about three per cent of the yearly budget. On the issue of the constituency and zonal intervention projects, he said that the system allows legislators to nominate projects in their constituencies but they do not implement them. “In line with their legislative mandate, they exercise oversight over the process. Corruption in Nigeria is a complex issue. Though corruption in any arm of government is not acceptable and must be condemned, too, however, single out one arm of government without any hard evidence is to undermine the authority of that institution. “The purchase of operational vehicles for members of the National Assembly has received extensive media attention,” Lawan said. HR Pros do not believe it is okay for employees to share personal salary information with co-workers. It opens a can of worms and a rabbit hole for managers and employees to fall into. For example, there is no limit onto how an employee can compare their salary with others, or online, and what it does is create a domino effect that the financial department of the company is not ready for. 👎🏻 First and foremost, the first thing that will happen is HR and your Manager will lose their confidence and trust in your ability to have discretion. Kiss any promotions goodbye. 💋😥 👎🏻 Anyone who was getting less that you now not only feels bad because your big mouth made them feel like worthless hamsters on a wheel, and they now know that you give away confidential information. 🤔🤨 👎🏻 Sharing salary information is not in the “spirit of transparency.” It is also not “fair.” What is fair or not is the responsibility of the higher ups. So, if you are concerned about equal pay or fairness and a lack of discrimination, insist the company HR Managers all vouch for that. Also put that on the Managers with a responsible, serious discussion. 🤓 Let them represent to you that the Company is fair. Most likely, they are fair.
