The epidemic of violence against women in Australia has reached crisis levels, and it's time for decisive action. In this recent article by Kate Lyons at The Guardian, the heartbreaking stories of women like Samantha Murphy, Rebecca Young, Hannah McGuire, and others highlight the urgent need for change. In just a span of two months, multiple women lost their lives in separate and unrelated incidents, sparking outrage and grief across the nation. The statistics are staggering. “Australia had nearly double the rate of women killed by a current or former partner, with 34 intimate partner homicides against women in Australia and 35 in England and Wales, despite Australia having a population nearly half that of England and Wales.” Women's Legal Service Queensland stands in solidarity with all those affected and calls on the government to take immediate and meaningful action to end violence against women. My children are named on a protection order issued against me, how can I have contact with my children?! TOP TIP🔔 - A protection order is not a parenting agreement and the DV Court cannot make parenting orders that states - where, who and when a parent can have contact with their child. - In issuing a protection order, the Magistrate may name children on the order who are affected by or are exposed to DV, in order to protect them. If the respondent is prohibited from living with or making contact with the aggrieved or the named children, the court may also allow exceptions that enable the respondent to make contact for purposes of spending time with the named children but only in accordance with a written agreement between the parties or a parenting order. In response to national outcry against the prevalence of violence against women in Australia, the National Cabinet has committed to a $925 million package to help people flee dangerous relationships. While we welcome the National Cabinet package, we are disappointed in its scope and join calls for further measures to be taken. Women’s Legal Service Qld CEO, Nadia Bromley responded to the funding announcement in an interview with ABC Widebay. “When we heard the National Cabinet was meeting we expected them to listen to the voices they've been hearing for decades about funding the sector, about funding refuges, about addressing housing, about cutting waitlists on counselling, but instead what we heard is a five year extension of an existing program that is about women fleeing violence, it's a band aid and it's a good initiative but it's certainly nothing new and it's certainly not what we needed to address this national crisis. To see that announcement come out is just so disappointing. I think the problem we see is although it's a good initiative and it does provide some comfort for women, it provides them with money for housing that doesn't exist, doesn't do anything to address the wait times for counselling, the absences of refuge or the many other problems that people are dealing with. Then, Domestic Violence charges proceed against both sides. Sending the state (whichever state you’re in) to pick up the charges. Do I really need to attend the court for this? Short answer- YES. If you are named as respondent on an application for a protection order, it is crucial that you or your lawyer attend the court as directed. That is your opportunity to have your say regarding that application. It is equally important that you seek legal advice as soon as possible. Housing victory! When families are ready to move out on their own, our Case Managers help them to locate, obtain, move into, and maintain safe permanent housing. The SAFE AND SECURE aspect is the most important part of our permanent housing placement. To help maintain this housing, the Case Manager will continue to support and advocate for the family with no end date. We will always continue to support the families we have served. A Guardian investigation reveals that Centrepay exposed vulnerable Australians to financial harm. Centrepay is a voluntary bill paying service for people receiving welfare payments to make automatic deductions for essentials. The investigation states that ACBF-Youpla was permitted to collect millions through Centrepay before its collapse, leaving more than 13,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people without funeral funds.
