Let's talk about MSP's volunteer opportunities! We have virtual and in-person volunteer opportunities, ensuring that anyone can volunteer with MSP! We also have a general volunteer program and our Sisters-in-Law program for more in-depth volunteer opportunities. There are many ways to volunteer virtually, and we are always open to your suggestions! Some ways include sending notes or drawings to clients, helping to translate documents, helping to spread awareness, or hosting your own donation drive. Some of our in-person volunteers come in on an as-needed basis to help with things around the office, or they help with tabling events, and so many other things! Our Sisters’-in-Law (SIL) program is for volunteers to accompany clients to court and other locations as a method of support. Allies are the first line of defense when it comes to a survivor’s recovery. Although this may sound over-the-top, I promise you it’s not. The way you respond when a survivors confides in you, can make or break their recovery. That’s a lot of pressure, I know. So swipe for some simple steps to guide you in the process.🫶🏼 An ally is someone who stands alongside a survivor and grants empathetic support, rather than just sympathy. Empathy says, “I’m sorry that happened to you, how can I support you and help you navigate your pain?” Sympathy says, “I’m sorry that happened to you, that’s life. You’ll get through it.” Empathy requires effort, sympathy requires nothing.

Let's talk about the complexities of abuse in relationships and why it's so hard to walk away. For years, I found myself trapped in a toxic marriage, battling emotional manipulation, isolation, physical assaults and fear behind closed doors. Despite the turmoil, I kept telling myself it was just a rough patch, a phase that would pass. But deep down, I knew something wasn't right. Emotional abuse took its toll, leaving me questioning my worth and ability to survive independently. Gaslighting and manipulation blurred my reality, making it difficult to trust my instincts. Fear gripped me tightly. I was terrified of retaliation and the uncertainty of facing life on my own. It took every ounce of courage to prioritize my safety and reclaim my autonomy. Leaving was the hardest yet most liberating decision I ever made. It wasn't easy, but it was necessary for my well-being and happiness. Abuse has a profound impact on the victim's psyche. It creates a tangled web of dependence and fear, making it incredibly challenging to break free from the cycle. But know this: if you're experiencing abuse of any kind, You Are Not Alone. What do you do when you regret what you said or how you acted during your abusive relationship? Many survivors carry the weight of wishing they had acted differently during their relationship. Abuse can leave us questioning our actions and feeling like we could have changed the outcome if only we would have made different choices. But it's important to remember that in an abusive relationship, your choices were often limited. Your actions were about survival in a difficult and dangerous situation. Your feelings of regret are valid, and it’s okay to have them. Now that you are free, there may be relationships that need to be repaired or things you have to work hard at to change. Be kind to yourself in this process. You are not to blame for what happened. You did what you needed to do to survive, and that takes incredible strength. So frustrated by articles like these that play into the role of exploring the other argument, playing devils advocate and writing the unpopular opinion no one wants to hear (especially when they are written by women) - because quite frankly, we don’t need to hear it!!!! I understand the point the journalist is making, of course everybody deserves a fair trial, but nothing about the criminal justice system and the way rapes are prosecuted is fair. We live in a world which is already heavily WEIGHTED in the favour of perpetrators and abusers who get away with rape endlessly. It’s basically legal! We live in a world where the conviction rate for rape is less than 1.6% - a world that already firmly agrees and acts in a way that protects powerful men from facing justice, so why, WHY do we need to listen to this patriarchy affirming drivel? I understand the intention behind the angle, and I understand the argument - but this kind of article is just *so* unhelpful at a time when survivors and people who speak out against incredibly powerful men, need all the help they can get. #believesurvivors #metoo
