OTD - April 23, 1908 - animator Myron Waldman was born. Waldman joined Fleischer Studios in 1930 as an assistant and was promoted to animator on "By The Light Of The Silvery Moon" (1931). In 1934, he received his own unit as head animator, directing shorts such as "Can You Take It?" (1934), "Betty Boop's Little Pal" (1934, which introduced the character Pudgy), "Hawaiian Birds" (1936) and the Oscar-nominated shorts "Educated Fish" (1937) and "Hunky & Spunky" (1938). When the studio moved moved Miami in 1938, Waldman animated on "Gulliver's Travels" (1939), and continued to direct cartoons including "Raggedy Ann and Andy" (1941), "Billion Dollar Ltd" (1942), and co-directed the feature "Mr Bug Goes To Town" (1941). In 1943, while Waldman was in the Army, his wordless book "Eve" was published to great success. After WWII, he returned to Famous Studios as head animator, helming shorts including "Musica-Lulu" (1947), "Santa's Surprise" (1947, introducing Little Audrey), and the Casper the Ghost series. He teamed up with writer Steve Carlin to draw the comic strip "Happy the Humbug" (1946-49) and later to produce the show "The Rootie Kazootie Club" (1950). In 1956, Waldman left Famous Studios and joined Hal Seeger's studio, where he worked on commercials and the pilot of the "Out of the Inkwell" revival (1960-61).He also worked on "The Milton the Monster Show" (1965-68), "Bat-Fink" (1966-67) and the opening and ending of "The Porky Pig Show" (1964). After leaving Seeger in 1968 and a brief stint at New Dimension Films, Waldman became an animation freelancer. During the 1990s, he drew limited edition cartoon art, and received a Winsor McCay Award in 1997. Waldman died in 2006. Waldman was significant for his handling of sentimentality and storytelling, and his long affiliation with American animation. He explained his approach to directing : “I’ll bet you any money you want that a few years from now, you take any kid and ask him what pictures he remembers, he’ll remember [the pictures that] have little stories, but you take a picture that’s only gags, they don’t remember them! They only remember a story more, and they can relate to a character more."

Superman - Fleischer Studios - 1941 É a primeira série animada do Superman feita numa época que não existia televisão. Nesse período tão longínquo as pessoas iam para os cinemas assistir novidades e ficarem atualizados. No total foram 17 curtas-metrangens, nove produzidos pelo Fleischer Studios enquanto os oito restantes pela Famous Studios. É importante notar que essa é a versão mais fiel do Super-Homem da Era de Ouro como estava nos quadrinhos de 1938. Na abertura há aquela frase clássica: mais rápido que uma bala, mais forte que uma locomotiva e capaz de saltar prédios num único pulo. Sempre quando Clark vai se trocar diz o bordão: "este parece um trabalho para o Super-Homem". Aqui temos o kriptoniano original que era mais baixo, seu uniforme tinha um "S" mais simples, seus olhos eram semicerrados, seu uniforme e a capa eram indestrutivéis. No início o Super não podia voar, porém ao longo dos episódios os produtores alteraram isso. As aventuras sempre giravam em torno de algum salvamento para evitar grandes catástrofes. Lois Lane é uma repórter inteligente e astuta, mas que sempre está se metendo em alguma confusão. Ora sequestrada por bandidos ora caindo algo sobre ela no que o herói surge para salvá-la. Era a típica mocinha indefesa que precisava de ajuda. O herói era dublado por Bud Collyer, o mesmo ator que emprestou sua voz para o herói na versão do Rádio de 1940. O que realmente impressiona neste desenho foi o uso da rotoscopia, uma técnica que utiliza referências reais trazendo a qualidade num nível de altíssimo. Sinceramente, pra quem é realmente fã do Homem do Amanhã essa série é essencial por mostrar da forma mais fiel possível o Super-Homem imaginado por Joe Shuster e Jerry Siegel. Une création Paramount Pictures pensée comme une variation de LITTLE LULU, personnage culte créée par "Marge" en 1935. Bien moins célèbre que La Petite Lulu, LITTLE AUDREY restera pour moi une porte d'entrée essentielle vers les classiques du film d'animation américain, du cartoon en tout genre. Un tropisme pour cette liberté de ton, pour cette violence physique et parfois extrême qu'aucun SAW, HOSTEL et autres Torture Porn renommé n'a jamais réussi à surpasser, et qu'au moins les enfants pouvaient regarder. Le premier épisode de LITTLE AUDREY est daté du 6 juillet 1948, et il s'appelle... BUTTERSCOTCH AND SODA. Il est interdit à la petite Audrey de manger des confiseries, elle en est raide dingue et peut même remplacer son déjeuner par un sac entier de bonbons. Sa nourrice lui confisque mais en découvre d'autres suspendus à la fenêtre de sa chambre pour toute la semaine et plus encore. Trop c'est trop, Audrey reste dans sa chambre sans manger mais commence à prendre des objets du quotidien pour ce qu'ils ne sont pas. Un parapluie pour un sucre d'orge, un oiseau en cage pour un piaf en chocolat... Puis soudain, elle tombe en un clin d'œil dans un monde merveilleux, littéralement à Candyland. Elle a maintenant toutes les sucreries qu'elle désire, mais pour combien de temps... Un des films les plus radicalement anti-malbouffe qui nous plonge petit à petit dans un cauchemar musical trop sucré. Montrez ce film à vos enfants si vous voulez leur éviter toute carie avant l'âge de 4 ans.
