Finally got to go back to the @thesustainablefashionforum after a four year hiatus. A big highlight for me was participating in a @debrand workshop, where we learned about new textile sorting (@sortile.co) and processing innovations that mean we can finally start recycling some blended textiles in their after life (@eastman_naia). (Previously all blends were downcycled and eventually landfilled because we didn’t have the technology to separate, say, the cotton and polyester in a T-shirt. This technology hasn’t reached scale by any means, but it’s promising that it’s here.) There was also lots to say about the changing regulatory landscape in the apparel sector, an activist movement that inspired major brands to stop using fur, the evolving secondhand market, and the psychology of sustainable behavior. @shellygabes @humanesociety @join_beni Stay tuned! Went to a serene city in Nagasaki prefecture, known for the battle of the christian farmers in 1637 (島原の乱). Did not see a single person during the walk from the nearby station to my hotel. It's a 100% car owner's environment, and not many foreign travellers have found out the place yet 😅 Arrived late coming by the local train, so took a walk by the sea early the next morning. Scrolling through my phone this morning I was promptly reminded of the recent Maison Margiela show by Galliano. As I sat there rewatching the show through half squinted eyes it suddenly clicked why this collection was adored by so many. Of course the clothes are breathtaking but that thrills me less and less these days. No, it was the PRESENTATION of the collection that deceived me into caring about high fashion again (well for a few minutes at least). Fashion shows have transformed over the years, from their humble beginning as a walking catalogue or website for consumers to purchase garments from to full blown performances. As you may expect the latter is more tantalising to my brain. However, despite catwalk shows now existing in a time where they can afford to be a performance rather than a catalogue, they seldom are. Simply look at the word ‘show’, what comes to mind? For me I’m catapulted into the idea of a spectacle, flashing lights, a performance something that stimulates you. All of the things that contemporary fashion shows seem to lack. It appears that provocative is out and pretentious is in. I’ve always loved the idea of a fashion show being a kind of performance art. It’s an interactive experience that presents a piece of art to onlooking spectators. Once again and I will say this until I’m blue in the face, garments and the objects we chose to place on our body is the most accessible form of art to exist. I believe that fashion shows should be an extension of this, they should disturb peoples day, their thoughts and perceptions not just make you think of a price and what event that you could wear the specific dress to. From speaking engagements to regulators developing policy parameters, I get asked “which brands?” a lot — but I think we need a gentle reframing here. ⬇️ It’s really “which behaviors” — behaviors like wage theft, overproduction, etc. 🤔 And these behaviors can happen at the ultra fast fashion brands *and* at luxury houses. Visited Nobeoka, Miyazaki prefecture. As with a lot of small cities in Japan, attracting tourists can be quite challenging if public transportation or taxis are not available, sometimes even reduced or none at all on weekends because every local person has a car and the elderly do not usually go out on weekends, so there is no discomfort on daily basis. Walked the streets of nakasu at night and the Hakata port during the day. Almost no Japanese was heard at the yatai stalls by the river or the pub and red light districts, and I was surprised to see tourist families with kids or with babies on pushchairs. I guess it's that safe compared to other countries. When I first came to visit Nakasu in my teens, I remember I felt quite intimidated by the barkers in black stuits. Now they just look like young boys to me. BTW, I saw a guy buying a bunch of roses that are made into rainbnw colors by sucking up color ink, probably a present for a hostess in that area. If it was a present for me, I'd like flowers that are more natural, or rather, some sweets or cakes would do. Says who that has gyoza for a night snack. lol. . #porttower #gyoza #nakasu .
