I have seen a lot of incredible historic fashion in my day, but this outfit takes the cake. Those pants?? Are you kidding me??! I can’t stop thinking about it. I’m in love. This 1930s motorcycle outfit (hot) is part of an exhibition about women’s sporting fashion that’s traveling around the country/down at the Cummer Museum now. Hoping SCAD picks it up so I can visit in person and take some reference notes to sew this outfit for myself. 🏍️🖤 #1930sfashion #fashionhistory

Step into the ethereal realm of ‘Comme Des Garçons’ Spring 2012 collection, where Rei Kawakubo skillfully weaves a narrative of ‘White Drama.’ Each garment serves as a poignant exploration of life’s defining moments: birth, marriage, death, and transcendence, all enveloped in ceremonial white. From the timeless elegance of wedding ensembles to the delicate lace reminiscent of christening attire, and even subtle allusions to the solemnity of a body adorned with white flowers or the pointy-headed robes of Seville’s Semana Santa, every piece reverberates with echoes of tradition and ritual.

Drawing inspiration from the spiritual quest of couture icon Cristobal Balenciaga—who believed he could find salvation in the perfect sleeve—Kawakubo presents sleeves as the focal point, long and wide, almost touching the floor. The choice of venue, a Salvation Army building, adds to the show’s spiritual aura, inviting contemplation on life’s mysteries. Is it a reflection on Japan’s trials in 2011 when the collection was launched, or simply Kawakubo’s playful take on life’s contrasts? Explore the intersection of tradition and innovation, solemnity and drollness, in this unforgettable collection. #CommeDesGarcons #FashionHistory #WhiteDrama #cdg

. . . . . . . . #1820s #1820sfashion #arthistory #historiadelarte #historia #history #fashionhistory #historiadelamoda

Personally I think there are a lot of similar trends happening in fashion right now as there were in the 1930s. Now and then we were seeing a lot of big sleeves, slick hair, and midi length skirts. This past Thursday my classmates and I had the honor of visiting the LSU Textile and Costume Museum to view some of their collection artifacts from the 1960s and 1970s. This gown designed by Emilio Pucci in the late 1960s was by far one of my favorites. Pucci was know for his vivid printed jersey silk blouses and dresses, but he was also a master in design for gowns. This gown was originally worn in the late 1960s to a Mardi Gras ball in Louisiana. This gown was constructed from a silk jersey fabrication and a wide variety of Swarovski crystals and rhinestones. Along with these embellishments, there was also embroidered beaded work all throughout the encrusted bodice. Similar to other popular 1960s styles, this gown is full of bold, saturated colors, and they are positioned in a psychedelic pattern. On the back of the bodice, there are several different patterns throughout made with the rhinestones, crystals, and bead work like the one seen in the upper right corner in the video provided at the end. Thank you to the LSU Textile and Costume Museum, LSU Textiles, Apparel, and Merchandising Department, and Dr. Mano for providing this once in a lifetime opportunity. #lsu #lsutextileandcostumemuseum #fashionexhibition #fashionhistory

Do you have a lazy $20million for these shoes? Did you know? Back in 2019, Italian designer Antonio Vietri made history by debuting the most expensive shoes ever made. The Moon Star Shoes were first presented on a yacht in Dubai as part of the MIDE (Made in Italy, Designed in Emirates) Fashion Week. These shoes are made with a 24-karat solid gold heel, 30 carats of diamonds, and a piece of a meteorite that landed in Argentina around 1576. Because of the opulent materials used to make these shoes and the value of Antonio Vietri’s name, these shoes have been valued at $19.9 million. #AntonioVietri #MoonStarShoes #LuxuryFootwear #FashionHistory #ItalianDesign #DiamondStudded #MeteoriteHeel #ExpensiveShoes #didyouknow #luxuryresidences

Finishing touches (well, fastenings) for my 1860s ball gown. If and when I have more time, I’ll add the same trim as the original bodice I copied this from has, but I’m not sure I’ll manage that between now and Saturday! I’m hoping to manage to go over all the buttonholes by hand before then, but if I don’t, the machine stitching will hold. It’s a beautiful fabric, though the colour is a nightmare to photograph… The underpinnings are very much cobbled together (I’ll try and do a post on that at some point) on account of a lack of time and energy, but they’ll hold together for one evening’s dancing. I’ll finish them properly at a later date - for now, I just have to remember that they’re good enough, even if they’re not perfect! Meet Madame Tulp, she is obviously very proud of the amazing amount of puffy, precious fabrics she can afford and probably asked the artist Cornelis Johnson to depict exactly that in a portrait. So he thought, I'll just let her touch the fabric, present it. Not in a silly way, of course, but with delicate pointed fingers, as befits a noble lady. Here we go, Madame Tulip and her precious, flashy dress, of course with a pearl necklace, living at the americanart collection. I was very tempted to wrap the pearls around her fingers, but then I thought I'd rather turn her into a somewhat mystical figure, like a sorceress or shaman. So I transformed her pearl necklace into this strange headdress that curls around her head. And suddenly her graceful gesture takes on something ambiguous (and is no longer just the expression of a posh rich woman). Maybe she's using the gesture to charm her boring husband, or whatever comes to your mind. Adding further psychological layers is one of my noblest tasks. You're welcome, Madame Tulp. . Hidden Johnson II Photocollage 2023 . . . The Hidden Portraits are digital interventions via Photoshop in photos of historical portrait paintings or busts. From time to time, I put older works in the focus again so that they are not forgotten in the feed. And I like this work very much, because it plays ironically with the thought that women have been portrayed far too often only as decorative. Since they had no real power in earlier societies (not even a vote), they were considered by many to be just beautiful and adored accessories, but in the end just decorative. That may be a bit polemical, but in my research I often read how difficult it was for brilliant women to be accepted as such (I spare myself any reference to the current situation). That's why I deliberately chose a portrait from lacma collection that was painted by a woman, Adélaïde Labille-Guiard, who really didn't have it easy in a male-dominated art world. I have transformed the sitter into a large, over-decorated gift package and behind the precious ribbon explosion an eye fixes us. I mean, that eye says it all. . This is a beautiful dress and mantilla from 1850 made up of a bodice and a skirt, in bluish-gray satin and decorated with black mechanical embroidery appliqués with large floral motifs and garlands. According to the Lace Catalog by M. Ángeles González, the lace, to which this piece can be ascribed due to its technical similarities, is a purely Spanish lace. The next 3 posts will feature Edwardian evening gowns, c. 1908-1919, probably all worn by the same stylish great aunt. This fairy garden gown has been difficult to date. Comprised of 2 pieces, the bodice has a deceptive appearance. Beneath the blousy exterior is an attached cinched undergarment w/ stays. The scalloped neckline is lined w/ layers of frilly ruffles. Above that is a trim of grey & black metallic beading & sequins. According to newspaper ads, metallic beading in both silver & gold was highly fashionable c.1914-1916. The bodice is edged w/ a crocheted lace trim that rests lightly on the hips. On the close-up photo notice that this trim is only loosely stitched on, an indication that it could be easily traded out to other garments. The skirt is constructed of 3 distinct layers. The undermost layer is made of a thick, crisp fabric (a sateen cotton or taffeta?). The middle layer is a full silk skirt. The outermost layer repeats the silk fabric, but is shorter, cut in an undulating line & trimmed w/ more metallic beading. The light gossamer fabric, the short overskirt w/ its curvilinear trim, & the loose bodice are of a later, style, but the heavily ruffled shoulders are more a feature of the earlier Edwardian style-very Gibson Girl in its flowery femininity. But that’s part of the interest in a family collection like this. These are not designer pieces found in museums. Not House of Worth. Not Paul Poiret. These women poured over women’s journals & admired their friends’ styles. Then they worked w/ their dressmaker to interpret the trends & incorporate the elements that flattered them best. I wish there was a way to share how soft this shimmering white silk is. It doesn’t seem to have discolored at all. However, the ruffles & beading have. I imagine the ruffles were closer to a champagne pink & the beading was more of a tinsel-y silver. There is significant interior wear in the bodice. More than perspiration, it appears to be residue of a deodorant lotion that adhered to the fabric. So it was either worn by a highly nervous young women…a wedding, perhaps? Or it was a ball gown whose wearer spent it evening whirling in dance.

#DidYouKnow that the Rockstar of all time, Elvis Presley (1935-1977) actually felt that his iconic rock’n’roll black leather suit was not really 'him'? Elvis is well-known for his 'flashy' stage costumes such as the head to toe black leather suit, white and red jumpsuit. However, in his personal life, Elvis was much more into a casual and simple look. In the 1950s, Elvis had already established his own dress sense. And it feels much more relevant today. He loved wearing Cuban collar shirts and a pair of plain pleated trousers. Indeed, the image of 'Elvis' both on and off stage played a significant role in building post-war masculinity across the world. But most importantly, his style shows that fashion mirrors an ambivalent nature of human beings. His Cuban collar shirt is not staged for us, which could probably tell us so much about who he really was. Impressions Todays offering features a portrait of Mary taken from the Madonna del Parto, a fresco painted in 1455 by Piero della Francesca. To me it has a sort of ethereal quality, both solid and transparent at the same time. Possibly because its a fresco - the paint would be applied to fresh plaster and from the little I know about the artform I think it is allegedly one of the technically most difficult forms of painting as there is no second chance on the drying plaster so mistakes are always visible and if the plaster mixture is wrong then the whole thing may break or slide from the wall. So there is a sense of danger and precariousness about it. There would be no room for nerves or indecision for the artist painting a fresco. So when I saw this 2024 RTW outfit by Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent it struck a chord somehow seeing as it is predominantly made from the sheer net fabric that is usually used for tights. Another unforgiving, technically difficult material that shows every fault, or even perhaps every action or interaction. I usually ladder them putting them on so this outfit would be useless to me! Anyway looking at the sheerness of it also made me think that here is an outfit that can only be worn by the most confident of people. Again like the fresco no room for nerves or indecision. Its an outfit I guess you have to commit to. Maybe this is why they seem to go together? Or maybe its just the ethereal aesthetics? Maybe a bit of both? The original fresco can now be seen in the Museo della Madonna del Parto, Monterchi in Italy #madonnadelparto #pierodellafrancesca #fresco #frescopainting #15thcentury #italianrenaissance #fashionhistory #arthistory #yvessaintlaurent #anthonyvaccarello #transparent #seethrough #womenartists #newartwork #digitalcollage #fashionart #fashioneditorial #fashionillustration #jessicaworralldigitalcollage #create #creativewomen #support

🔹The Buccaneers (2023-)🔹 In the Buccaneers Lizzy and Virginia are introduced at court which means that they wear court gowns. Brittish court gown did change with fashions but some elements of it didn’t change. These were a long train, which was often seperate and minium of three yards, three ostrich feathers in the hair and a veil. The gown was supposed to be low cut and long like evening wear even though court introductions were usually during day time. On the left is princess Mary of Teck in her court introduction gown in 1886. This is a decade after the Buccaneers is set but there are still a lot similarieties as court dresses should. Costumes for this episode were designed by Giovanni Lipari. #courtdress #thebuccaneers #maryofteck #1880sfashion #victorianfashion #fashionhistory #perioddrama
