The mysterious luxury Fiat that really existed, but no one has ever seen. The late-1920s were a time of very rapid economic and social changes, from welfare dynamism to stock market crisis in a short timespan. As always the automobile was greatly influenced by events, with consequent changes in taste and needs, but also of the customers themselves. This is the 1929 straight-eight 5000cc Fiat 530, a car that was born but never existed. After the extraordinary grandeur of the early-20s divine 4800cc straight-six 519, an episode almost unique, it was necessary to focus more on luxurious but more practical and modern cars, searching for the right path one step below: replacing the old 3400cc 510 six, updated in 1926 with the 512. The same year began the project for its worthy replacement: the 3800cc 525 six, more reliable as customers now expected from a car, easier to drive, more rational and efficient, abandoning technical virtuosity as an end in itself, same eye on exports as for the successful 2300cc 520 six. The only one to continue, in a more modern way, the 519 boldness should have been the 530, whose development began shortly after. Not much is known about, but a 5-litre straight-8 like her would have been the answer to the 3500cc 85hp eight Ansaldo Tipo 22, 4-litre 100hp V8 Lancia Dilambda, daring against Isotta-Fraschini and international competition. But in 1929 the market implosion was coming. Daily life in the streets of Asmara, Eritrea, at the time part of Italian colonies of Africa, through some gorgeous 1930s photos. A "little Rome" of the 20th century, still today characterized by typically Italian customs, UNESCO heritage site since 2017. An open-air treatise on XX century architecture, avant-garde currents of Cubism, Futurism, Modernism, Rationalism, Art Deco, reminiscences of Liberty, neoclassical or neo-Gothic. A synthesis of different creative inspiration free from the motherland's urban and architectural constraints, in Eritrea translated as the search for a "city of utopia". In just one place Garbatella and Sabaudia palaces, Monteverde Vecchio villas, Fiat Tagliero purity of its futuristic lines, the airplane-shaped service station designed in 1938 by architect Giuseppe Petazzi. Or the old art deco façade of Cinematografo Impero, still showing old posters, the 1919 Opera Theatre, a masterpiece of stylistic mix that goes from Risorgimento, Neo-Romanesque, to Neoclassicism, with elegant Liberty expression in the interior decòr. Cappuccino with croissant at Bar Zilli or caffè latte in a glass at Bar Tre Stelle, playing "Italian-style" billiards and admiring the monumental Cinema Roma. You can sleep at Albergo Italia, the oldest in town, or send a postcard from the Central Post Office. It's still possible to come across old Italian cars, punctually brought back to life by mechanics who pass down the secrets (and Italian mechanical words) for generations, in a sort of uniquely African temporal and geographical re-contextualisation. Sometimes I like to forget the 8V, 130 Coupé and usual Dinos, to remember that this too was one of the most beautiful Fiats of all time. And then...looking for the most beautiful of the cars from a brand that else had to do, and which only fortunately has often met with beauty, would be extremely inexact and an end in itself. Alessandro Sannia defined it "undoubtedly one of the most superlative products ever made by Fiat", and he really knows about Fiat. Mainly thanks to the mastery of a particularly inspired Count Revelli at Viotti's best era and to a chassis with the ideal dimensions to obtain these perfect proportions, which spread, extend, enlarge and define what Revelli had already signed in 1929 on the 514MM, later replicated in the intermediate 522. Its story hadn't started well, it was an ugly duckling created for the '29 sports season, especially the Alpine Cup which it didn't even win, showing interesting engine tuning but an essential bodywork...essentially ugly ! Convincing Fiat to opt for more agile and competitive cars to satisfy gentlemen drivers, and to transform the 525CA into the SS (Short Sovracompresso) we see, a fashionable, indulgent, pleasure-loving, rich, chic, regular production roadster. Sporty ? Not really, created with the sole purpose of pleasing and entertaining: a proper cad's car. The straight-six 3800cc brought to 90hp made it lively enough, and finally the dedicated extra-low chassis different from the saloon's made it also stable and convincing despite the relevant weight for a spider and really long wheelbase (and bonnet). Too many prewar masterpieces are often forgotten, and I'd probably take her over an 8V ! One of the royal families who were certainly among the most loyal customers of Piedmontese brands was that of Denmark🇩🇰. Typical of peaceful Nordic countries back then as today is not having particularly close relations with others depending on political orientation, as much as preferring to maintain a neutral and economically fair profile with other Nations in case of war and resulting speculative interests. A main difference to highlight with respect to what we were doing in central Europe: colonialism, wars, industrial and scientific dominance. A totally different way of life and cultural origin. The consequence for them is that they often were neutral in car preferences too: not having particular economic ties with the United Kingdom and USA, and not sharing Germany's increasingly aggressive policy at the time of these photos, the choice wasn't necessarily forced to fall on one of these nationalities. Avoiding any embarrassments of political, if not even ideological, nature. Several of these photos came from the heirs of Svend Heden, one of the mechanic/chauffeur of the royal family. We see various 6-cylinder 4800cc Fiat 519 for parade and private use, the first 5 photos show King Christian X's 519 tourer bodied by Dansk (pic 5 is set inside the royal garage together with Prince Axels's Lancia Lambda), in pic 6 a 519 Farina enclosed saloon in Italy almost identical to the one Prince Frederik drove. Pic 7 shows another big 519 7-seats limousine with standard Fiat body, pic 8 a LWB 520 saloon. Old daguerreotype from mid-1930s with a touch of colour and handwritten dedication, as was still fashionable at the time: this is what remains to us of Count Tomasi. An eccentric and fascinating character, who loved to entertain his friends in sumptuous dinners that lasted for hours. "We're glimpsing the future and think about your beautiful work", that's what is written behind the photo. The Count had two great passions: cars and dogs. For the first he loved to participate at concours d'elegance, I found a small trace of this on a period magazine page in pic 2, which mentions him in caption 5 as winner of third prize in Viareggio with his Fiat 525 Viotti, erroneously called by the journalist Tommasi. Prince Rospigliosi's Rolls-Royce and Giuriari's Bugatti should be highlighted for relevance, the most gorgeous hands down is mr. Caminata's OM roadster. For dogs, he owned a breeding, especially Dobermann, those of Princess Iolanda came from there. And since my great-grandmother owned a haute couture shop, the "beautiful work" mentioned in the dedication refers to the line of pure snake leashes she made for the Count ! Tauro and Giasone in pic 3 were the first boys to have it. The charm of Rome lies in the fact that, like other Italian cities but smaller in proportions, it's a widespread, free, open-air museum. Not so user-friendly sometimes, but there's also no need to close ourselves in a museum. Art, history, architecture and political humanism thus come closer to you, as well as to a good part of its inhabitants. Which for elementary and understandable transitive property causes (+ others less romantic) are immune to Stendhal's syndrome which instead captures anyone else who's about to visit the vestiges. And if I had the chance, as in these photos, to admire even for a few moments such traffic circulating again in Vittorio Veneto boulevard, Stendhal syndrome would also catch me. 1930s normal everyday life. Looking in detail we see on the right, near Venchi chocolate boutique, a white Lancia Augusta cabriolet, several Fiats including a 521 immediately behind, a Balilla and a Bianchi S9 to its right. I also see that Opel Zwei-liter cabriolet (Germans on vacation ?...). Between several Lancia Augusta and Artena and next to the carriage there's also a rare white Ansaldo 22 roadster, and next to it an Alfa Romeo 6c 2300B streamline saloon probably by Pininfarina or Viotti. Someone's driving in the city a Coppa d'Oro...In third photo we see a Fiat 525 environmentally integrated, the last photo is near Cecilia Metella Mausoleum, situation doesn't change. Ah, what a pleasure to have taken a ride on it, only as a passenger for a morning, a few years ago...severe, traditional, squared, very robust and well built, the Fiat 525: in this case the standard shorter "S" version saloon, so only 1980 kg instead of 2100. Conservative in the soul, right down to the most hidden detail exactly like the clientele it was intended for. This one in particular from photo 2 on, lived its youth in the quiet and elegant streets near the villas and castles of Grottaferrata, not far from Rome, in fact the license plate is more than vintage, but it's not that of the first registration in 1929. The 525 still completely disdained the dynamism of the new decade, easily seeing it from inside, which still recalls for the last time that taste of the nineteenth-century living room, a simplified XIX's style of still original inlaid dark wood, elaborate thick velvet with a geometric theme such as the best armchairs but still far from Chester and Poltrona Frau, silver zamak hardware and outrageously complete Art Decò instrumentation, the carpet intended only for those who sit on the vast muffled rear. Non-flim-flam romantic, its good-natured straight-six 3.8 litre engine is a proof of reliability and smoothness, it never strives but surely never makes this grande berlina go fast either: better so, we've to be patient waiting for the 4 mechanical drums to do their job, but the sound coming out of the long exhaust is really nice, and the steering is unsuspectedly communicative. Interesting things coming from truly unexpected sources. Sorry for the reprehensible quality of the photo, but the small pics of the news pages in the 60s were not given a great lithographic quality, colour fidelty is questionable. Taken from the December 1965 issue of an Italian comics for kids very popular at the time. But I liked it. It's a small blurb about a gathering of vintage cars for children who subscribed to the magazine, you can see a small group of them back there, but I focused on this gaudy Isotta Fraschini roadster. Nothing particular is specified, but it should be a rare Spider-bodied Super Sport, probably by Viotti. Caption says 1928, smells wrong, since this was an interpretation on the long but above all tall IF chassis of what Viotti with the fruitful participation of Count Mario Revelli di Beaumont was successfully proposing to Fiat: in particular I am referring to the Fiat 525 Spider and 522 Spider, both from the early 1930s and both gorgeous. At the bottom left there's also a Fiat 525 limousine, I just have to rely on what the text says, otherwise it would have been a rather difficult riddle. Truly exceptional Isotta and among the sportiest, with a side that vaguely reminds me of the "Cutaway door" style of some tourers bodied by Vanden Plas, but indeed not quite the same. But the thing I like most is that the article ends by saying after the meeting the club would've organized a little hunting trip: of course ! Can't think of a better use of a 1930s roadster, over two tons of bulk, which at the time with the SS engine it could travel at 160, than a countryside hunt tour. So this is how in Christmas of 1929 a typical in-town small fuel station looked like. Many things have changed since then, clothes, cars, and in general petrol stations near to the city centre are much less frequent today. In the foreground is a brand new mid-size Fiat 514, and behind it a larger Fiat 520 six, smaller sister of the 525, both straight 6, all smooth and very well built cars excellent for customers that had no urgency to arrive and rather traditionalist in taste. At the time SILIAM was the main company that built those pumps for service stations, and it was based in Milan.
