It's written LX, but it's read Sixty. In the ancient Lancia language, the taste for giving a touch of refined intellectuality even to small details reached the trims-identifying acronyms too. The constant, however, started with the Greek alphabet, and then moved on to the Latin names, which from cities and localities in Lazio (Astura, Artena, Aprilia, Ardea) passed to the consular roads of ancient Rome (Augusta, Aurelia, Appia, Flaminia and Flavia). Not everything is as it seems: for any other manufacturer LX would have meant Luxe or Lux, understood as DeLuxe, exactly like other badges including Special, Executive, GL, Sport, CL and so on. But not here. Lancia created the LX option to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of its foundation (1906), offering it from 1966. So the two letters indicate this number, in Roman numerals, remaining again in the Latin theme. The first model to bear this acronym, which identified the better-equipped versions, was the 1967 Flavia berlina 1800 series 2 (the option wasn't available on the 1500), followed by the almost identical Flavia 2000 of 1969 and its substitute, the '71 2000 Berlina. Always available at your choice regardless of whether the version selected, in the vast choice of options, included or not the Superduplex dual braking system, floor or steering gear lever, fuel-injection or carburettors, 1815cc or 2000cc engine, cloth or leather interior. LX included power steering, heated rear window, sun shades, thick shag pile and bumper overriders with protective rubber included. The Delta also received the LX trim in 1982, and covered the A112, Y10, Thema, Dedra, Z, K and Y too. From the very first Lancia Flaminia berlina to the very last, throughout its entire 14 years lifespan, if we also include this prototype: actually the first proper Flaminia after the Florida concepts. Still slightly immature in its non-definitive form, during the 21 April-1 May 1956 Turin Motor Show: larger grille, different rear bumpers, Aurelia B12 pillarless suicide doors, Aurelia 2500GT hubcaps, different interiors, fixed 3rd side window, jack-supporting holes along the sills. On the other hand, the V6 was already the final one revised by engineer Ettore Zaccone Mina, no longer identical to the B12 as in the Floridas. Even though Pininfarina's rationalization to put it into production had modified headlights, fenders, sides, roof cut and kept the rear suspensions and transmission identical to the Aurelia, Lancia and Pinin were convinced to maintain the pillarless structure despite its structural weaknesses. Justified by a completely new platform, stronger and more integrated with the upper body compared to Florida's underpinnings. But new late-50s legislation, which didn't allow for suicide doors anymore, overruled the idea. The second photo is more melancholy: the last version which continued wearily from 1963 to 1970, 2800cc×130hp, two-tone paint out of fashion, no rear wipers, no side pillar light. A better car overall: faster, standard disc brakes and alternator, optional air-con, heated rear window, two-piece drive shaft, higher gearbox final drive and higher torque for much improved drivability. Good news! I finally saw @kekkekarren’s Lancia Lybra. The car I once sent to him with screenshots of a Facebook marketplace advertisement, and which a few weeks later he owned. I could say that I brought a rain of terror upon Daan - the engine broke down first, but luckily Daan is quite a handy guy, so it was fixed pretty easily. But ever since, the MOT has not been prolonged as its bottom part is quite crusty too - don’t mijd the duct tape… Luckily Daan knows how to fix that too, and welding the Lybra is on the planning for this summer. Daan is putting a lot of effort in keeping the Lybra driving, and let’s be honest: would you not? In this specification, the Lybra is truly classy. A wonderful paint job, beautiful alloys and a lush interior - Daan’s Lancia is truly a head turner. To add onto it: don’t forget the majestic 5-cylinder engine with an equally majestic rumble. 🇮🇹 The Lancia Stratos HF is a rear mid-engined sports car designed for rallying. It was a highly successful rally car, winning the World Rally Championship in 1974, 1975 and 1976. Lancia traditionally used the design house Pininfarina and had not used Bertone before. Bertone desired to create an opportunity for a relationship with Lancia and knew that Lancia was looking for a replacement for the aging Fulvia for use in rally sports. Bertone decided to design an eye-catching model to show to Lancia. Bertone used the running gear of a Fulvia Coupé which belonged to one of his friends and built a running model around it. When Bertone himself appeared at the Lancia factory gates with the Stratos Zero he passed underneath the barrier, to great applause from the Lancia workers. After that Lancia and Bertone agreed to develop a new rally car based on the ideas of Bertone's designer Marcello Gandini. Gandini had already designed the Lamborghini Miura and was working on the Countach at the time. Lancia presented the Lancia Stratos HF prototype at the 1971 Turin Motor Show. The prototype had three different engines in its early development life: the Lancia Fulvia engine, the Lancia Beta engine and finally the mid-mounted Dino Ferrari V6 producing 190 hp (142 kW). The use of this engine had been planned from the beginning of the project, but Enzo Ferrari was reluctant to sign off the use of this engine in a car he saw as a competitor to his own Dino V6. After the production of the Dino had ended, the Enzo Ferrari agreed to deliver the engines for the Stratos, upon which Lancia suddenly received 500 units. 27-28 April 1935, a few months before the official launch of the Fiat 1500 on 5 September (with a small private preview by Aldo Farinelli for La Stampa newspaper on 3 September), i.e. the car that among those conceived and designed by Count Mario Revelli di Beaumont would have been the most widespread up to that point, signals were thrown at the 7th Turin concours d'elegance. He was already planting the seeds of his aerodynamic concept (started in 1934) with coachbuilders, his relationship much more usual rather than directly with a major manufacturer. Visible in his occasional presence at Pininfarina and above all in his assiduous collaboration with Viotti, which this image is taken directly from his advert for the success at the event. Viotti brought the two cars in the foreground: a Lancia Augusta and the Alfa Romeo 6c 2300B Pescara immediately behind, both individually showing and anticipating stylistic features that will be seen again on the upcoming 1500. Note how much they distinguish themselves from the other cars, all stupendous, but created with the intention of continuing the classic harmony, while Viotti wanted to amaze: we see a Lancia Astura cabriolet Pininfarina, a Bianchi S9 Dolomiti cabriolet with factory-built body, an extraordinarily sumptuous Dilambda saloon probably by Pininfarina again, and at the end a small Fiat 508 Balilla cabriolet of more dubious origin, maybe Garavini. È una Lancia Aurelia, ma non somiglia all’Aurelia. A prima vista, seguendo il profilo delle lamiere, si direbbe una coupé inglese con qualche chilo in meno. È allestita sull’autotelaio B 52, che la Lancia metteva a disposizione dei carrozzieri perché potessero allestirlo senza i vincoli e le limitazioni imposti dalla scocca portante dell’Aurelia di serie. La linea di questa fuoriserie uscì dalla matita di Fritz Ramseier, che firmava le sue realizzazioni col nome della località dove aveva sede il suo atelier (Worblaufen, Svizzera, presso la capitale Berna), in auge dai primi anni Trenta alla fine degli anni Cinquanta. Ramseier comprava i telai da Bentley, Rolls Royce, Isotta Fraschini, Alfa Romeo, Citroën e Lancia e li vestiva tutti col suo graffio stilistico inconfondibile: parafango posteriore in evidenza sulla fiancata, montanti sottili come saette, mascherina del radiatore leggermente inclinata. Questa coupé (guida a destra, livrea verde scuro, motore 6 cilindri a V di 1991cc, 70 CV, telaio numero 1080, motore 4639) è stata prodotta il 12 dicembre 1952 in esemplare unico assieme a una versione cabriolet, anch’essa unica. Due anni più tardi, la vettura è stata presentata al Salone di Ginevra, dove è stata vista e acquistata da una matura signorina svizzera che l’ha tenuta vent’anni. So… yesterday was quite a day. Many of you know by now that I’m looking for the perfect Lancia Thesis. Yesterday, we, which is @teddy_the_xc90 @kekkekarren and I, decided to go and look for a Thesis in Aachen, Germany. On paper this Thesis was close to perfect: it looked good in the pictures, had the 2.0 5-cylinder Turbo engine, had a manual and was an Emblema with all the options. It even had the most costly Poltrona Frau leather interior, a much sought after option. So, we went to Aachen, spoke to the super friendly salesman and drove the Thesis. And whilst at first, I was rather impressed by the silent and smooth ride of the Thesis, the beautiful interior and the marvelous sound the five cylinders created… we still thought it was a dog. The manual transmission was far from fresh, the steering did not feel great and the car was smoking a lot. To add onto it, the airconditioning did not work well. As you can see in the second to last pic: the Thesis was quite a hoot to drive, but also a very questionable experience. This, judging by the last pic, left us all sad and in utter disappointment. I really thought I’d be owning a Thesis at the end of this weekend. Sigh. Finding a good one of these at a friendly price point is not easy. But I guess the search continues. Vincenzo Lancia's topos, studying his very personal vision of ideal car, was that of an elegant, agile and discreet machine of medium size and medium power, almost Rover-like policy, therefore a resistant V4 around 2000cc, no more and no less. Like the Artena, a mid-size luxury 2-litre automobile. Immediately after WW1, with the urgent need to exercise its automotive creed on an international scale, the first 1922 Lambda was also very close to this medium and light scheme. So in the early 1930s it was the Artena that came closest to Vincenzo's fundamental thought and which, although it was a completely different engine, came closest to the Lambda's. Cast iron block rather than alloy, overhead camshaft driven by chain rather than gears, chassis in welded box sections, modified front suspension fixing. A smooth, sturdy and long-lived engine, in many cases covering over 100.000km before requiring overhaul, but indeed quite lively too even if much less than the larger Astura: reaching a creditable 100kph keeping the 3rd gear on regardless of the standard or coachbuilt body it mounted (115 in 4th) was no sluggard for its engine class, considering that many cars of similar size were breathing hard to reach that speed in top. However, this doesn't mean that your beliefs apply well to the market needs: the Artena wasn't an overwhelming success. Overshadowed on the one hand by the Augusta which, lighter and cheaper, offered the same qualities without sacrificing nobility, on the other by too much similarities with the Astura (sometimes also the chassis size) which on its side however offered a V8 with superior performance and superb pleasures of exclusivity. Advanced automobile, innovative assembly line too. This is the modern Lancia Flavia production in the new Chivasso factory, the first model to be built there but not the first assembled entirely on site: that will be the Fulvia, in 1963. The Flavia, presented in October 1960, began its life in the old Borgo San Paolo plant together with Appias and Flaminias, in insufficient space and equipment to fully compensate for workmanship it needed, which was very high-tech. Saturated factory, impossible to build more than 20-25 Flavias per day. Lamination paneling (the famous lastroferratura in Italian), painting, assembly (housed in perpendicular departments, connected by an overhead conveyor) were the first to become operative in Chivasso (last pic). The most innovative element was the raised assembly rails rather than on the floor, so as to slide the bodies out in front of the workers at eye level to make work more efficient, easier and less tiring. The engines however, here neatly placed on pallets, were the last to still be built in Borgo San Paolo due to their sophisticated construction: the aluminium flat-fours arrived already assembled and complete with their subframe, disc brakes, independent double-wishbone suspension and De-Carbon hydraulic shock absorbers. In pic 2 top it's June 6, 1962, when the first Flavia entirely built in Chivasso leaves the finishing line, driven by engineer Luigi Rolando (smoking a pipe). Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evoluzione 1 "Martini 5", 1992. At the end of the 1991 season, Lancia won their 5th consecutive World Rally Manufacturers Championship (and the Driver's Championship with Juha Kankkunen), and promptly celebrated by manufacturing a limited run of 400 special edition models, the "Martini 5". Throughout her huge rallying dominance with the Delta, Martini was the Lancia title sponsor. The Evoluzione 1 specification were to be the final homologation cars for the Lancia Rally Team and featured a wider front and rear track than earlier models for increased stability, wings and arches more pronounced and rounded with raised front strut top mounts necessitating a front strut brace, four—wheel drive and a modified engine producing now 210 bhp whilst also being the final Delta to not have a Catalytic converter fitted. The 400 "Martini 5" were all finished in white with a blue and red Martini stripe running along both sides and sat on white Speedline "Monte Carlo" 15-inch aluminium wheels. Back 3 years ago, the Lancia Zeta was a common view for me as two of these were parked not far from each other near of my home. They all disparead now so I have to search a bit more to find these. This one looks very nice and with the 2.0 Turbo of 147 hp, it's quite exclusive. Most of them has diesel engine.
