- Porto Bold - D. The D is sorted - although I like quirkiness in a font I think sometimes it’s best to keep things well designed and simple. The stress (angle) of the bottom right of the D mirrors the stress of the curve of the R so I think that’s why it works well. - Attempt at creating a font inspired by a war memorial in Porto. (See two posts ago for reference photo). Haven’t tried designing a font since I was about 18. I'm thrilled to have been interviewed by David Johnston-Davies, founder of #Identifont – the largest independent directory of #digital #fonts on the Internet, for the release of my #Sirenia family. The blog honors the designers with these words: "From the hundreds of fonts we add to the Identifont database every month we chose a selection of the most interesting recent additions, and interviewed the #designers about their approach to each #design:" . . Sirenia is a soft, #sans #serif #font with rounded terminals. It seems to be an evolution of your 2015 experimental font #Sadness; is that correct? Yes, it is. Sadness is one of my first ever #typedesigns and was created during my design studies in the late nineties. The font was originally released by Fountain Type around 2000, but after the unexpected death of its founder Peter Bruhn in 2014 I had to re-release it under my own label, #Floodfonts. Expanding the family and reworking my old letters last year changed the design so much that I decided to rename the typeface “Sirenia” – a reference to the hanging snouts of manatees. The closest fonts I can find to compare with #Sirenia are #Cocon and #Sauna. Were these influences on its design? No, the origins are more experimental. Using the Blend Fonts feature of the archaic type design program #Fontographer, I tried to #interpolate different type styles and take inspiration for new #letterforms from the fragmentary results. By blending an unpublished #script typeface by my mentor Jens Gehlhaar with a #sansserif typeface, I developed the idea of an upright #cursive that combines rounded, teardrop #serifs with the upstrokes of a handwritten script. The characters of #Sirenia have a very flowing, #handdrawn look about them. Did you originally #sketch the characters on paper before #digitising them? Yes, I totally enjoy drawing by hand. I'm much faster and feel less limited when sketching by hand than drawing #Bezier curves. Besides, it's nice to get away from the screen for a while. We love typography! For the 'Bombay to Mumbai' typography exhibition curated by @lovefiltershop , we were given the opportunity to tap into the rich typographic heritage of the city. Our sister concern @bombaytypography already has an archive of beautiful fonts that one can see on signboards around #Mumbai city. Unfortunately most of these are in a dilapidated state and we wanted to highlight their plight in this visual piece. The various letters/fonts formed the word which accurately showed their state whilst the printing inks characteristics of water solvency was used to create a dramatic effect where the colours ran right over the edge of the frames.
