Back with the 3rd part of Travel Mishaps stories 😄 I've got 2 more unfortunate events that happened while traveling, and I'm sure you can all relate to having these every once in a while... at the time they're sometimes annoying/scary/creepy but in the end we end up laughing them off after some time has passed... I hope 😅 LEBANON: My friend @salmakholeif and I were heading to Lebanon for a friend's wedding; 15 minutes after my mom dropped us off at the airport, I found out that I'd gotten my expired passport 🤦♀️ The airport's 25-30 minutes away from my place and the flight was approaching, my mom's phone was on silent so she wasn't picking up. Sooo after numerous calls to basically every single person in my family trying to wake them up 😬- at this point I've lost hope and accepted the fact that I won't make it - I finally reached my brother who found my passport. He was on his way to his car to bring it when he saw my mom arriving home, she picked him up and they brought me the passport. They still love me, I think 👀 GERMANY: This one's the most vein; I was in Germany visiting friends and we were walking around one day when just as I was about to dig into my Döner I see Patrick Dempsey right in front of me 😱 Now my first thought was: ask him for a picture! But all I could get myself to say was a very awkward "Heyyyy", he was super nice but I hate myself for not getting a picture, he IS McDreamy after all 🤷♀️ Now tell me YOUR crazy travel situations 👇 📸 @amrassaid

Travel Mishaps Part II ✌ Picking off where I left off with memorable travel stories, enjoy 😄 BRAZIL: Back when I was 19 years old after spending A TON of time between flights from Cairo to Frankfurt and finally arriving in Rio De Janeiro, I got news that my luggage, which had everything for a 2-month stay in Brazil, was still stuck in Germany 😅 Now imagine a 19 year old girl alone in Rio, where the majority don't speak English, with no luggage. I was a bit worried at first, thinking this was turning into a trip from hell (if this is how it's kicking off) but it was THE best experience of my life. I bought a few essentials and clothes the next day and waited for a call from the airport, in the meantime I got to meet some pretty cool people at the hostel I was staying at and we explored the city together before heading to other destinations in Brazil. Oh and I got the bag 3 days later, so all was good 😄 USA/MEXICO: I was on a family trip to the US; we went on a day trip to Mexico and decided to get braids... cool idea, right? NO! Travel Mishaps Part I 😄 Now I'm sure behind everyone's pretty instagram pictures there's a lot of crazy stuff going on. From missed flights to words lost in translation, we've all had our fair share of funny/awkward yet memorable situations. I've gathered a few of my favorites and I can't wait to read yours below 👇 PHILIPPINES: I had just quit my job and I wanted to take a long break exploring the Philippines. A day after I arrive I get sick and I'm super tired, that's enough bad luck for a trip, no? Wrong! 😅 A few days later it started raining non-stop with nothing to be done and we got news that a typhoon was about to hit the island 🙈 As horrifying as this was, but it ended up being quite nice actually, aside from the weather, a huge group from the hostel started hanging out, we spent christmas together and whenever the rain stopped we got to roam the island on scooters 🛵🌴 SOUTH AFRICA: I was in South Africa with 2 of my friends @salmatelbo @yasminsameh and we rented a car for a few days on the Garden Route. That was the first time for me driving outside of Egypt, additionally you drive in the "passenger" seat there, on the opposite side of the road ☝️ One day we got pulled over at some sort of check point and I immediately thought I did something wrong and started to panic. Ok, so there's a well known struggle most of us have; do something you're passionate about or be stuck in a job you don't like for the money, eating food you love and crave or stick to a strict diet that gives you hell, splurge on shopping or be a responsible adult 😅 I really believe that both extremes will be the end of us, and I'm not here to preach how we should quit our lives and do as we please, let's not kid ourselves it's not realistic 😄 There is however a balance between both, that would be perfect if pulled off. The year of could have beens... & silver linings Starting off 2020, we all had lots of plans and dreams; work moves, studying abroad, events or concerts and the best of them all: travel plans. Personally my eyes were set on several destinations; a few stops in Europe (Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovenia) and either a trip to New Zealand & Australia or a trip to South America. A year like no other 👻 First off: Merry Christmas, guys!! 🌟🎄Secondly: 2020 has definitely been an interesting year to say the least 😅 Even though this year put the world through loss and heartbreak, it also brought out a different side in all of us and for some it brought out the best! This year taught me 3 things: * First is that we need to have a slower pace in our day-to-day life and that it's ok to take on less responsibilities than usual and take some time off every now and then... we need it * The second is that no matter how hard and far ahead you plan your life, it can all change in a split second. A one of a kind experience 🚴♀️🤘 38 voyagers just completed cycling 1000km from Cairo all the way to the south in Shalatin. I witnessed their first day of riding to Sokhna and it brought back memories of crossing Egypt through the Western desert from Cairo to ElKharga (1000km) back in 2018 with @thenscrossing 🚴♀️🚴♀️ We were the first Egyptian group to complete this route and it took us 12 days. The best beaches in Egypt! 🌊🔆 *Save this post for when you're in the mood to experience the best vibes ever!* . By now you can all tell, that I'm all about the beach and that's where the majority of my happiest memories took place so I thought I'd share my favorite beaches in Egypt. The clearest/ bluest waters are a couple of hours - some a bit more 😅- away from Cairo. 1) Ras sudr: Aside from its crystal clear shallow waters, Ras Sudr is heaven for kitesurfers. 2) Marsa Matrouh: A popular summer destination among Egyptians, with untouched white sands and pristine waters. And it's 2.30 hours away from our next destination! 3) North Coast: This is where you want to be during summertime if you want to be surrounded by people and meet up with friends. 2.30 hours away from Cairo and a short drive from Alexandria, you'll find this spot along the Mediterranean. 4) Blue Lagoon: Dahab's gem! One of my favorite places in Egypt is Dahab, and a short boat ride away is this magical spot. It's a windy lagoon, where you get to stay in huts and get to be taken back to simpler times, disconnect from your phones and be in touch with nature. Kite & windsurfers alike frequently visit it because of its perfect condition for the sports. 5) Mahmeya: An hour away by boat from Hurghada and you arrive at this paradise. You can have lunch on the island and enjoy numerous activities like snorkeling and beach volleyball 6) Marsa Allam: One of Egypt's top diving spots! And home to the well known Elphinstone site. 8 hours by car or an hour and a half flight from Cairo is what it takes to reach this beauty and it's well worth it! ⭐ Which beaches should I add to the list? Relaxing or adventurous travel plans? 🔆 . I'd say I like a bit of both. Depends on my mood and where I'm at in life I could sometimes prefer a chill getaway doing nothing but relaxing on the beach and listening to good music; this would be the case with a lot of local trips. . But when I'm abroad I just can't stay put! I sleep less and do more because I want to make the most out of it and not miss a thing! The secret behind Bo-Kaap's brightly colored houses 🎨🔆 . While on a walking tour through Cape Town's Bo-Kaap neighborhood, many wondered WHY the houses in this particular neighborhood were SO colorful? And the tour guide told us that no one really knows.. there are several stories about how it all started but no one can tell for sure. So, I'll share with you some of them and tell me which one you'd LIKE to be true 😉 . Quick backstory: During apartheid, the South African government segregated areas and the colored and blacks were moved to seperate townships; Bo-Kaap was the area for non-whites. . A few stories about why the houses were painted in these colors: 1) It was a way to give directions: the story started in the 1970s and the streets had no names, houses had no numbers, so as a method to describe where they lived, people painted their houses vibrant colors to stand out and be seen. 2) To escape the monochromatic life: when people of Indonesian origin moved to the area in 1870, they had to wear dull white colored clothes, so when they had the choice of colors for their houses, they made them as pretty and colorful as possible 3) To celebrate life: during apartheid the houses were white and cream like British colonists wanted; by 1994, with the end of apartheid, people started painting their houses happy bright colors to celebrate life 4) As an expression of freedom: these houses were leased to south-east Asian slaves and had to be plain white; at some point they were allowed to buy the houses. So the owners painted them as an expression of joy and freedom ⭐ So what's your verdict? You just can't talk about South Africa and not mention its ecologically rich and diverse wildlife, with many types being endemic to the country, meaning they only exist in SA. Famous for its national parks and big 5 game (Lion, Leopard, Rhinoceros, Elephant, Buffalo), you stumble upon various types of magnificent creatures while casually strolling through the streets, on a road trip or on safari. . A day of must-see spots! ⭐Save this post for later⭐ . Let me take you through a full day spent roaming around the Cape Peninsula with these awesome guys! @luckyandlostct 😍 . We kicked off the day at the historical Bo Kaap neighborhood (which I'll tell you more about later). We took off to the famous Boulders beach in Simon's Town to see a colony of African penguins that settled there in 1982 🐧 . And I'm sure when you hear "Thailand", Phuket, Phi Phi, or James Bond Islands come to mind, right? Well, I'm here however to tell you about Hong Island. After 20 minutes by speedboat or 45 minutes by long tail boat you can reach the island from Krabi. . I'm happiest in small coastal towns 🌊🔆 . I've been told that I seem happier when I go somewhere by the beach, and I agree! I'm more positive, calmer and carefree. Divers, this one's for you! 👌🌊 *Save this if you plan on visiting Zanzibar at some point. . So, living in Egypt, I'm definitely biased towards Egyptian dive sites, they really are some of the best in the world. I did however enjoy diving in northern Zanzibar, visibility and conditions were pretty good, reef was cool and these guys @spanish_dancer_divers were awesome! . If you're in Zanzibar, Mnemba Atoll is a must! It's a famous conservation area with cool sightings and good visibility. Kitesurfing fanatic or not, Paje is a MUST and it's one of my favorites! *Save this if you plan on visiting Zanzibar at some point. . A few days back I told you about The Rock, a restaurant in the middle of the ocean.. Well, a short 15 minute drive from there, you'll arrive at Paje... personally I think this is the best beach in Zanzibar 🌊 . Paje is a small village on the eastern coast of the main island in Zanzibar. It's THE place to be if you're into water sports, especially kitesurfing 🏄♀️ the conditions there make it perfect for experienced kitesurfers as well as beginners, and you can easily book a course to learn. . BUT if water sports aren't your thing and you're after a few calm days at the beach, this is your go-to spot as well. Yup! Paje still isn't as well-known as beaches up in the north, so it's still pretty laid-back, with small crowds. A restaurant on a rock in the middle of the ocean? Yes, please! *Save this one for later . This week I'm taking you back to my trip to Zanzibar, Tanzania (based on your votes on my story). Let me kick it off with one of the most unique restaurants I've been to, it's called: The Rock. Why? Well because it's located on a rock in the middle of the ocean... The views! 😱 . During low tide you get to walk to/from the restaurant but during high tide, you get to be transported to/from the shore through a fishermen boat, which makes it such a cool and different experience all together. As I grew up, I got hooked on solo traveling, espeically after a 2-month trip to Brazil. . It was once a local spot, but has now turned into one of the most iconic places to visit on the island. A closer look at Sugba Lagoon 🌊 Save this post if your planning on visiting the Philippines at some point 😍 . A while ago I wrote a post about the top 10 things to do in the Philippines, and one of them was visiting Sugba Lagoon. It's one of the most popular things to do in Siargao. You can either go through booking a tour or just rent scooters with friends and enjoy a scenic ride to the northern part of the island from General Luna (which is considered the main town in Siargao). . As soon as you get there, you take a quick boat ride through mangroves to reach the main lagoon. At the lagoon itself, you get to enjoy its pristine, blue water. While I LOVE traveling with friends, it's solo travel that gave me back the most! 🥾🎒 . Who doesn't love heading off on an adventure with a group of close friends either locally or internationally, right? But while many people wouldn't go for a solo trip as it might be intimidating or boring, it seriously is something else, that I think you should try at least once. Why? Here are 6 reasons: . 🧳It's super empowering and liberating. It might be a bit scary at first but you definitely come out more confident and ready to take on new experiences because of how you learn to deal with hardships alone 🧳Your schedule is entirely yours to decide..you want to visit a museum? Go for a hike? Take it easy today and just chill? By all means, you're free to do whatever 😉 🧳It opens up endless travel opportunities! (My favorite 😅) How many times did you want to travel somewhere but couldn't because none of your friends wanted to/ didn't have the time/money? 😏 You're welcome. 🧳You will HAVE to get out of your comfort zone and make new friends.
