Finding overlooked work hiding in my Cuba archives, 2022🌊🇨🇺

We journeyed through the night, through the Kyzylkum Desert, to Nukus, capital of the autonomous region of Karakalpakstan, and the most northeasterly point in our route. Our reason for going: the Igor Savitsky Museum of Fine Art, known as the Louvre in the Sands. Opened in 1966, this museum houses the second largest collection of Soviet Avant-Garde art in the world, which was collected by Savitsky. From 1966 until his death in 1984, he collected 85,000 pieces. The paintings are largely derivative of Impressionism and Post Imoressionism and were, of course, sanctioned by the Soviwt regime of the day, which favoured the peasant heroes of Socialist Realism. It is a fascinating collection, of which a few examples are shown here. The first is a painting of Bukhara's Kalyan Square, by Karahan (Bazaar at Mirab); the second, a painting by Savitsky himself (he fell in love with Central Asia, and gave up art to become a collector). Pic 3 is Desert, by Jeglov. Pic 4 is a Still Life by Shemyakin (his art landed him in a mental asylum - he now lives in Paris). Pic 5 is Komarovsky's Portrait of a Man. Pic 6 is Pushkin, by Tarasov Pic 7 is by Matevosyan, and depicts the Fish Factory at Muynak, on the Aral Sea, in 1977. That town is now many miles from the shore, as the inland sea has dried up. This is the Louvre of Central Asia... The Savitsky Museum in Nukus (also known as the Museum of Forbidden Art) is a treasure-trove of avante-garde art. Igor Savitsky, who came to Nukus in the 1950s on an archaeological dig, started to save and collect banned Russian art. Anything but socialist realism was banned by Stalin, and any other art form was seen as a crime. Many of the artists represented here died for their art, and it is truly extraordinary that the museum and its collection (of which only a fraction has space to be shown) have not been relocated. Jeddah Old Town / 2022 Today, we take a look into the heart of Jeddah city, coming from my hotel - I passed kilometre after kilometre of residential blocks, flashy stores and illuminated shopping arcades as well of miles and miles of demolition. I was taking two days off after 5 days of shooting a commercial project. I decided to visit the historic centre of Jeddah first - known as Al Balad. In 2021, a regeneration masterplan was announced - and royally endorsed - and the Jeddah Historic District programme was launched to restore some 600 historic properties for residential, tourism and business purposes. The buildings were in decay as they were constructed from coral stone, limestone, and wood. So, by 2022 - many were under scaffolding, more was to follow. The Church of St. Nicholas is located in the former Greek settlement of Gelebec, these days known as Söke (Aydin). The former Orthodox church was built in 1821 on the ruins of an earlier church. It is situated near the old Roman city Priene, a place where Alexander the Great stayed. After the departure of the Greeks in 1922, the church was used as a mosque for 25-30 years. Decorated in light / Sanctuary Series One of the nicest interiors that I have photographed in recent years was this stunning mosque, literally buried in the middle of nowhere in Turkiye. 「ワタリガラス」 By Chet R. “The crow said don’t look..” one of the quotes I love from the graphic novel by J.O’barr. Recently the trailer for The Crow movie remake has been released and it looks horrendous. I always love how Eric was depicted in the graphic novel more than the movie, including the 1994 version. So here’s ワタリガラス (The Raven ) 😝. The Crow as depicted in O’Barr’s graphic novel but female and with Asian flavor.
