‘Star Trek’, a long-running American pop culture juggernaut, is famous for morality plays set throughout the cosmos that are facilitated by ethically upstanding characters from a utopian future. Yet when someone in the company of Trek fans (such as myself) brings up Major Kira – a character from a dystopian world who is an admitted terrorist and war criminal – someone else will say, “She’s awesome!” Why is that? Well firstly, it’s because she is. If you watch the show, you know. And Nana Visitor’s performance throughout the series is absolutely fierce. But there are other reasons. Some may get defensive and say, “She’s not REALLY a terrorist. She’s a freedom fighter.” But I’d say this is semantics, especially within the morality of the series which does not distinguish between either of those terms. DS9 subscribes to the old Gerald Seymour quote, “One man’s freedom fighter is another man’s terrorist,” and with that insists that we accept Kira Nerys as both. More controversially, the series suggests that, ethical or not, terrorism is a natural response to violent oppression. The series also makes it very easy to take her side when it comes to how the fictional Cardassian Union and their fictional Occupation of the fictional planet of Bajor are depicted. When the Bajorans were first introduced in ‘Star Trek’ in the early 90s, Executive Producer and DS9 co-creator Michael Piller compared the Bajorans to: “...the PLO [Palestinians via the Palestinian Liberation Organization] but they're also the Kurds, the Jews, and the American Indians. Happy memorial birthday to Charles Washburn, the first-ever African-American to be a 2nd assistant director in Hollywood, in 1967 ... after having been the first black admitted and then graduated from the Director’s Guild of America trainee program the year before. Adding in the fact that both feats happened via the original Desilu Star Trek makes me doubly proud and honored to have known this Treklander, and hopefully helped to share his story and his person. “When I started at Desilu, there were only three black employees on the whole lot,” Charlie told me once: “Nichelle Nichols, myself, and the guy who had the food truck — who closed it up after lunch and then shined shoes.” I have my own interviews with Charlie archived, but thankfully he himself had done the same with Star Trek buddies like director Joe Pevney and others, before they passed. It was all for a chapter or two or three he’d completed for his book-to-be, entitled “Charlie Star Trek”— his nickname from back in the day, from the way everyone at Desilu heard his greeting as he answered the onstage phone. There’s a lot of history preserved there — and lots from succeeding shows as well that hopefully will come to light. What might stick in my mind most of all, perhaps, is the joy on Charlie’s face the night I got him over for that nationwide 40th Anniversary remastered screening of “The Menagerie,” and fans in Burbank swarmed him in the lobby after he’d been introduced as the icon he was. For my part, I’ll help get his words, deeds, and legacy out to any Trek fans and film buffs I can, in any media that works. That’s the least we can do for ourselves… and for Charlie Star Trek. (And yes, the role of damage control team member Lt. In what is possibly DS9’s darkest episode, “The Darkness and the Light (S5E11), members of Kira’s former cell are fatally picked off one by one by an elusive assassin who leaves cryptic messages meant for Kira Nerys. Eventually, Kira – who at this point in time is pregnant (don’t ask how) – gets taken captive by the assassin only to discover it is a Cardassian civilian worker who was disfigured and traumatized due to a bomb set off by Kira’s cell meant to assassinate a Cardassian commander in his residence. The bomb ended up killing 12 people including the commander’s wife and children. Kira’s would-be assassin, Silaran, correctly proclaims that his retaliation has only been by murdering “the guilty” – that is, the individuals responsible for that specific attack. To keep consistent with his quest to spare innocent people from his vengeful murder spree, he threatens to perform a C-section on Kira so that her unborn child may be spared from him murdering her. When Silaran contrasts him killing “the guilty” with Kira supposedly being indiscriminate in her killings, you’d think Kira would show regret for her actions. You’d certainly expect that with characters on other TV shows. But Kira Nerys is not like other TV characters and ‘Deep Space Nine’ is not like other TV shows. Instead she says: “None of you belonged on Bajor. It wasn’t your world. For 50 years, you raped our planet and you killed our people! You lived on our land, and you took food out of our mouths! And I don’t care whether you held a [weapon] in your hand or ironed shirts for a living! YOU WERE ALL GUILTY! AND YOU WERE ALL LEGITIMATE TARGETS!!!” There’s that factor associated with most definitions of terrorism that I mentioned - the one considered in the present as a war crime. And by our legal standards, Major Kira Nerys declaring innocent people to be “legitimate targets" would likely incriminate her as a war criminal. Today, I did a brave thing. When I began uncovering the truth about my decade+ of constant SA at the hands of my step-father, it was 2020 and the societal traumas were immense. My flashbacks poured out of me at a dangerous speed, and continued on through to today, four years later. To cope, I immediately returned to college and began building my art program. I’m almost ready to finally start actually piecing it together, and I’m graduating with my first degree with a 4.0. I’ve been accepted into my first choice college program to continue for my next degree, and I’m racking up certificates and versatility in my field as fast as I can digest the information. I’ve come so far. I’m so proud of myself, and my capacity to recover from traumas that nearly killed me multiple times over. Today, I reached out to Star Trek actor #AndrewRobertson, who played #Garak on #DS9 to request a little bit of love. USS Great Link. Largest of the early 25th century Democratic Dominion Gamma Quadrant built Starfleet vessels and assigned to the Founders homeworld. Not as large as the battleships fielded during the Dominion war but far more advanced and especially designed to host a majority Shapeshifter crew. It features the very first liquid lounge where founders could liquefy but then spend time with other species serving on board as a very scifi pool bar. Great Link spent much of her time in the Founders System as a deterrent vs. reprisal from species with grievances vs. the old Dominion. But as the Federation spread through the Gamma Quadrant, the founders paranoia eased, and by 2415, Great Link embarked on a successful 3 year Exploration mission of the Delta Quadrant. See, the Bajoran resistance didn’t just kill Bajoran civilians. As established in the episode “Cardassians” (S2E5), the Cardassian Union allowed civilian citizens from their homeworld to be housed in settlements on the planet – possibly on land that Bajorans were forcefully displaced from (this was inspired by a real-life practice on Earth known as “settler colonialism”). These civilian settlers would include families and children. And these non-military civilians were vulnerable to Bajoran insurgency, resulting in many deaths. It's never explicitly stated that Kira participated in these specific attacks, though. Afterall, there were other Bajoran resistance cells, some even more radical and deadly than the Kira’s affiliations. In the early episode, “Past Prologue” (S1E3), we’re introduced to the Kohn-Ma, a more controversial resistance group during the Occupation as their attacks were implied to be, shall we say, less considerate of people’s lives. It’s the only episode in the series that gestures at the “good rebels vs. bad rebels” trope as those in the Kohn-Ma are shown to refuse their violent ways even when their world is finally free, despite Kira’s desire to see them reintegrated into her people’s society so Bajor can rebuild. Kira ends up looking good by comparison as in the episode’s end, she recognizes that the time for fighting is over and that it is time for peace and reconciliation. I had the oppertunity to meet Nana Visitor, who plays Major Kira Nerys on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. I wanted to get her autograph, but rather than settle for a signed picture I decided to make artwork. I think usually people draw or paint portraits of her character but I wanted something more unique. . Most images in this painting have some relation to Major Kira or Nana herself. The various desserts are connected to the bakery business she ran while living in Arizona after DS9 as well as her affinity for cooking. The Major was constantly reading crime reports (data pads), while Nana is an enthusiastic reader (books). . The inscription "To the journey within" tells the nature of DS9. Other Star Trek series explore outward, going where none have gone before. But DS9 is more about the internal journey, the personal and moral exploration. I requested she write it, though she's said it in a few talks and interviews. I think she liked it and I know it will be a treasured posession from here on out. USS Dakota moves away from a stricken civilian freighter after rescuing the crew, just as the Warp Core ignites. An urgent distress call had been triggered when the freighter hit a gravatic mine left over from the Dominion war. Dakota responded and evacuated the crew once her chief engineer discovered a warp core breech was imminent. Most civilian ships can't eject a warp core, so if antimatter containment is damaged severly, they can spectacularly explode. Most of the lifepods on the freighter had been damaged by the original mine explosion. Luckily, Dakota was nearby on patrol in Bajorian space and arrived at Warp 9 in just 7 minutes. After quickly accessing, nothing could be done versus the breech they evacuted the ship. Alright, as of Friday the Defiant is all finished. I had some light leaks to repair which resulted in modifying the Aztec patterns a little. I also can’t get the registry lighting exactly like I want, so I may skip it on any further projects. This kit is always fun, but a challenge because the fitment on the top and bottom are terrible. Hence the reason you see the black through the impulse engines. Anyhow, she needs a home and a new captain.
