Gent: Mitten in der historischen Altstadt von Gent steht man irgendwann unweigerlich vor der imposanten Burg der Grafen von Flandern. Die Burg Grebenstein geht in ihrem hautigen Erscheinungsbild auf das Jahr 1200 zurück. Mit einem wirklich kurzweiligen, sehr amüsanten Audioguide kann man das Gebäude auf eigene Faust erkunden. Mich hat vorallem der unglaublich gute Zustand des gesamten Objektes beeindruckt. Die Wasserburg wurde in ihrer langen Geschichte nie zerstört, lediglich die historische Ausstattung ist teils verloren gegangen. --- In the middle of the historic old town of Ghent, you will inevitably come across the imposing castle of the Counts of Flanders. Grebenstein Castle dates back to the year 1200. You can explore the building on your own with a really entertaining, very amusing audio guide. I was particularly impressed by the incredibly good condition of the entire building. Gent Ist das nicht ein herrlich idyllischer Anblick? Zugegeben die Ruhe auf dem Bild war wohl mehr ein glücklicher Zufall. Ruhig ist es in Gent eher selten. Die Stadt ist quierlig, voll von jungen Menschen (man spürt die mehr als 70000 Studenten) und die vielen Cafés und Restaurants in der Altstadt sind zu jeder Tages- und Nachtzeit gut besucht. Kein Wunder, denn an jeder Ecke gibt es etwas Neues zu entdecken und hinter den vielen hübschen Fassaden stecken oftmals kleine, skurrile Läden. --- Isn't this a wonderfully idyllic sight? Admittedly, the tranquillity in the picture was probably more of a happy coincidence. It's rarely quiet in Ghent. The city is lively, full of young people (you can feel the more than 70,000 students) and the many cafés and restaurants in the old town are busy at any time of day or night. I recently visited a city that resembled something straight out of Hogwarts. It was a 950km drive from Odense to the beautiful city of Ghent in Belgium, which is nothing short of a Gothic, well-preserved beauty that still holds a medieval charm. Our reason for visiting Ghent was simple: the underrated city is less crowded, plus there are fries, beer, and waffles. We had 48 hours in the city and a host of things to do, which mainly involved eating, drinking, and walking to take in the essence of the city. Ghent has some of the best restaurants and cafes I have been to. Additionally, the city has been awarded the title of “veggie capital of Europe,” which is quite a triumph. The food in Ghent is all-star, but what stood out the most for me was every restaurant or cafe we stepped into had the loveliest of interiors. There is beauty everywhere you see. Talking about beauty, St. Michael’s Bridge is located in the heart of the city and makes for a great photo-op, offering the best views of the city’s three most famous towers, St Nicholas’ Church, the Belfry, and St Bavo’s Cathedral. We ate at lots of places, but the ones that top my list and also serve delicious vegetarian options were La Botantiste, Otomat, Horn OK Please, the cafe inside De Post (I forgot the name), Epiphany, Way, and Frites Attlier. If you love mustard like Abhi here does, you must visit Tiereteyn-Verlent at Groentenmarkt, which has been producing mustard varieties (both grain and non-grain) since 1818.
