This very unique 1963 Gibson J-50 came into the shop after a visit to a large corporate guitar chain for repairs (whose name we shall omit) left the owner less than thrilled. Although sacrilege to some collectors, the owner had mounted a pickup with a preamp and decided to change over to a stripped down L.R. Boggs soundhole pickup. Well, the previously mentioned repair shop patched the old preamp hole with some kind of epoxy putty and didn’t even sand it flush to the body (luckily the owner’s sister is an artist and painted over it), and then couldn’t get the new pickup jack far enough through the end block to put on the strap button. Their solution: just put the strap around the cord when it’s plugged in… not a good idea. He brought it to Stay Tuned to get this remedied, and we noticed some serious splits in the front and along the back seam, which we happily took care of. Just arrived an extremely rare and great sounding 1942 Gibson J-50 Banner Flat Top Acoustic Guitar! *Link in our profile * - This heavily worn, weathered but beautiful Gibson J-50 is a very rare guitar, one of the earliest examples of this long-lived Jumbo model and also one of the very first “Banner” Gibsons ever built. The Factory Order Number (FON) 7117H on the heelblock identifies it as a 1942 model. The natural-top J-50 was actually the first model in the “Banner” line to go into production, and this early wartime J-50 has the earliest “Banner features”. The first J-50 is registered as having been shipped out June 1, 1942 while the earliest J-45s and LG models were not shipped until August. A beautiful day off here in Nashville feels like a good time to introduce Anny. She is a Gibson 1950’s reissue J-50. A very faithful reproduction of what Bob played in the first half of the 60’s, as well as throughout the 70’s and 80’s to current. I swapped out the batwing pick guard for a teardrop to be more accurate to Bob’s. She stays strung with (mostly) Ernie Ball 11-52 phosphor bronze uncoated “earthwood” strings. I also use custom printed Clayton .50 duralin picks and a vintage “Hamilton” capo as seen in pictures from Bob’s early recording sessions. Tonight was a really special night for so many reasons but these pictures tell a story. My grandfather, the Judge, bought this guitar new in 1964. It’s a 1964 AJ-50. He played it for years and even used it for campaign rallies when he was running for superior court judge of Cobb County. His nickname was The Singing Judge. He loved this guitar and cherished it for as long as I can remember. Fast forward to the ‘90’s when I was a kid and first starting to play. I got to play it only when we played together and when he was learning the banjo. When he passed away in 2008, it became mine. He was my number one supporter and a huge factor to the person I am today. I haven’t done much with it. I’ve always been too nervous that if anything happened to it, I would be devastated. Recently my tune has changed and I’ve realized grandad wouldn’t have appreciated it just sitting around and not being played. My trip up to Wisconsin was for shows and to hang with some of my favorite people. It was also to have my good friend @jeffreymkellymusic do his thing to this guitar and get it set up to become my number one player. He spent the last day and a half building a new bridge, saddle, nut, and installing new frets. Tonight I got to play it on stage for the first time in years in an incredibly magical setting. A cozy little listening theatre in Alma, WI right on the Mississippi. It sounded amazing, felt almost spiritual, and I couldn’t have been more connected to my music. A huge thank you to the fine folks @bigrivertheatre for having us out and making a space for folks like me to do what I love. Thanks to @carriagehousetunes for being some of my favs to share a stage with. And to @jeffreymkellymusic , Thanks for bringing “The Judge” back to life. ①67年製J50のアジャスタブルサドル。パーカッシブルな鳴りは唯一無二。でもやはりもう少し倍音が欲しい。 ②ネットでブリッジのスロットにはめ込み出来るローズのサドルアダプタ見たいのを発見。これを使えばノーマルサドルのような倍音が期待でき、いつでもアジャスタブルに戻せるっていうスグレモノ。 ③もともと幅も長さも実際の穴のサイズよりも大きいので削ることが前提。 ④ヤスリでピッタリに削ってブリッジにはめ込み完了。しかしブリッジより厚みもあるため飛び出ている。またブリッジにはRも付いているため、真っ直ぐな状態だと見た目もかっこ悪い。 ⑤考えた結果、ブリッジにはめた状態で上からブリッジの高さとＲに合わせサンダーで削る事に。 傷が付かないようにギター本体を念入りにマスキング。 ⑥恐る恐る電動サンダーで削って面を出して最後は細めの紙やすりで手仕上げ。 キレイにツライチになりました。 ⑦牛骨サドルを取り付けって完了。 ⑧倍音はもちろん弦のテンションも上がりさらに激鳴りとなりました❗️😄👍🤟 #アコースティックユニット#ロックバンド#おやじバンド #gibson#ギブソン #gibsonj50#アジャスタブルサドル
