Many of their albums were available in the US so over the years I came across most of the 70’s albums along with the Studio One and Prince Toney material. Country Music and Blues Music used to be a closer thing. Both growing out of folk traditions that were intertwined, in the early years of both genres you could find artists sharing songs. So when Bob Wills came along, grafting the hillbilly music to jazz, Texas Swing was born and country music was changed. The Grand Old Opry, the arbiter of what is and isn't country, didn't allow drums or horns, those were pop music instruments, but Wills insisted if they wanted him to play. By this time Bob and his Texas Playboys were drawing bigger crowd than Benny Goodman or Tommy Dorsey, and he could not be denied. Wills' music would influence the Bakersfield sound of Buck Owens as well as artists like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Asleep at the Wheel, and Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. In fact the song "Bob Wills Is Still the King" was written by Waylon as a bit of shade to Willie who he thought had gotten to big for his britches. A Kendrick-Drake for a more innocent time I suppose. Wills influence can not only still be heard of modern country music, but also the big house in which county music exists.
