Today 8th March 2023 is International Women's Day. In the UK, we are fortunate in many ways to have made progress in women's rights. To have the right to work, to marry who we choose, to vote, to have autonomy over our bodies. And I am thankful. But that's maybe the point.... that I feel that I have to be thankful. These simple things that I feel so fortunate for havent always been a given, arent always a given in the future, and for some reason our bodies, our minds, our thoughts often become a focal point for politics in a way that would never be seen against men. And it makes me sad. It makes me angry. But it also makes me determined to ensure we move forward and never back. Our only difference is our gender, not our humanity. And for me.... until the need for these conversations go away, until women are free globally to just exist, to set their own path, until women are free to walk the streets without fear, free to speak loudly and without repercussions, free to travel, study, drive. Choose to be a mum or not, choose to wear what they want, without fear of violence. Then we have ways to go. Today is important until we no longer need to have a day just for women.... because equality is truly in existence. But until then.... Today is the day we celebrate the strides we have made We celebrate our womanhood, in all of its glory. And we thank those that have stood before us.... to get us here. To the women in my life. So here it is…I’m a Cornish girl, or should I say a Celtic girl. I love the outdoors, love the sea and have spent my life looking at, swimming in, and soothing my soul by looking at the power of the water. It’s always been a reminder of how small I am in this world. And how much there is out there. When I was launching Glas I was sat in my car, rain pouring down, staring out to sea, feeling small against nature and refreshed by it all at the same time. I’d decided to embark on this new journey but I was stuck. So I took myself to the Sea, went back to basics, sketchbook in hand and tried to come up with a name that embodied everything I was trying to be. I thought about my Celtic roots and wondered what my surname, Gray, would translate into in a Celtic language. I googled and there it was. Glas – A single word which captures all the colours of the ocean, a blue, green, grey colour. A Celtic sea. It was perfect - my heart, name and roots all rolled into one. I wrote the word like it was scribed and I imagined it washing into shore in a bottle. Like a long-lost love letter to myself. And I knew that was it." I always loved oil on the ground as a kid, how it looked black, but when you got close, you could see it had a dark blue shimmer. It's true to say our default is black, grey and white. But.... part of our wider range is built around natural and industrial tones. I love terracotta, red clay... earth tones and how well these work with blacks and creams.
