Make time for play ✨ As creatives it’s not always easy to make time (and space!) for play and creative exploration to nourish our practice outside of commissioned work. The concept of play is essential to children’s development; and adults still need to play. It can help us discover new things about ourselves or our practice, it can lead us into new directions or it can simply cheer us up whilst providing a much needed outlet to release stress and frustration. Re-introducing play into your practice may look like taking part in new classes and one-off workshops, or scheduling some time to finally fill in the creative workbooks you’ve been waiting to complete patiently. It may just look a little bit different for everyone but at its core engaging in play means allowing ourselves to explore new things, to be bad at something, to produce ugly work, to create for the sake of creating without the pressure of posting about it on social media or the pressure of having to create a piece that should be sold. Play is central to the way we approach our creative workshops; you don’t have to create something you will put up on your walls for generations to come. Lean into the process, let yourself relax and enjoy exploring your own creativity. Our next workshop is on Wednesday 22nd May at 18.30 at @southblock_glasgow. Creating a statement with accent or feature walls is a fantastic way to add depth, personality and visual interest to a space. Here are our top tips - 1. Choose the Right Wall - Select the wall that naturally draws attention or one that you want to highlight, such as the one behind a bed in a bedroom, an entrance wall or the wall behind a focal point. 2. Experiment with Colour, Pattern and Textures - If you want to make a statement opt for a bold colour or pattern that complements the overall theme or mood of the room. This can create a striking contrast against neutral walls. Equally a texture can be added for a more subtle look which will add dimension and enhance visual appeal. 3. Consider the Room’s Purpose - Think about the function of the room and the ambience you want to create. A lively, social space may be able to take a more dramatic feature wall, whereas if you want a relaxing, quiet space like a bedroom or a study, you might be better to opt for softer hues, or subtle textures. 4. After 32 years in the creative industry (22 years as Traffic) I think this is probably our favourite (and proudest) design project to create. I had the pleasure of visiting Second Cashmere @secondcashmere in Glasgow for the first time. This innovative company is doing amazing things by giving new life to cashmere textiles that would otherwise go to waste. They source cashmere from textile recyclers and use it to create beautiful, original collections and restored knitwear from celebrated brands. But here's the really cool part – they've been saving all the little scraps and leftover bits from their projects over the years! During my visit, I collected a few bags full of these cashmere scraps.
