Our Grace family will be collecting donations to support Emmaus the entire month of April. In Missouri, more than 15,000 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities will receive services this year. Emmaus has a 125 year tradition of supporting people to live a life they want to live in a variety of community settings. Grace church has a long-standing and loving relationship with the Emmaus community. April will be a great month to renew our commitment. We might expect that, after denying Christ, Peter would cower in shame—or perhaps even run away in an attempt to leave his past behind him. Instead, when he hears the news from the women, he doesn’t dismiss them like the other disciples. He gets up and runs to the tomb. When he peers into the empty tomb and sees the linen cloth, he is filled with awe. Even after the biggest failures, even after the worst case scenario has happened, can we run toward hope? Today we recognize Maundy Thursday. Maundy is Latin for “mandatum” or command, which is where the word mandate originates. Today commemorates Jesus’ last supper with his disciples (now our template for the sacrament of Holy Communion). During that same evening, Jesus washed the feet of those gathered. Only hours before they would betray and abandon him – Jesus commanded his followers to love one another, saying that THIS would set them apart as Children of God. They couldn’t foresee the pain and redemption to come, but the message is ours to tell: Love. Does. That lets me know that many of us have probably had a skewed view of repentance at some point in our lives… Let’s demystify repentance: Repentance IS NOT ❌: ❌ Punishment ❌ An emotional decision ❌ Manipulation ❌ Forced ❌ A one time transaction with God ❌ Something you do just so you don’t go to hell Repentance IS ✅: ✅ A conscious decision to change your mind ✅ Turning away from the things that separate you from God and turning towards Him as your complete source ✅ Confrontational. One Great Hour of Sharing is one of four special mission offerings of the United Church of Christ. This Lenten Offering supports the disaster, refugee, and development ministries of the United Church of Christ within Wider Church Ministries. My life’s mission: So every soul can shine their brightest. Last year, I was finishing up my 2nd coaching certification and my sister called with this verse and said, “Ivory, this is what you do!!” 🥹 I was overcome with gratitude and humbled as I celebrated the confirmation from the Lord to follow Him in faith to fulfill the calling He created me for and it became my business’s verse. I don’t know where you find yourself today. You may be in a hard spot, following a dream, taking steps of faith in spite of fear, facing challenges in relationship, with your health or in other areas of life. Can I encourage you? Surround yourself with people who pour into you and who challenge you to keep moving in the direction God has called you to. **Keep your eyes peeled and your heart open for the confirmations/affirmations that are all around you.** They’ll give you hope, inspiration, and the grit to keep going no matter what comes your way! Many of the original cemetery trustees were also founding members of the church. 📆Save the Dates! Because doing justice and loving kindness are at the heart of our understanding of what it means to follow Jesus, at UCT, we’ll be celebrating Black history all month. Feb. 4 at 10 a.m. worship, we’ll consider the starting point of Black history…which will take us to places in Africa and the Caribbean. Many of the congregational songs we’ll sing–even the breads we’ll share for communion–will come from those regions. Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. worship, we’ll look at the history of the American Missionary Association and learn about our denominational forebears who set up schools throughout the south for newly free people after the Civil War. Associate Conference Minister LaTrell Harrison also will be with us on that day. Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. worship, we’ll consider why learning about Black history is vital for people who are white. Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. worship, we’ll learn about some remarkable Black Floridians, including Zora Neale Hurston, Howard Thurman, and James Weldon Johnson. Thursday, Feb. 29, 6–7:30 p.m., Church and Family Life is hosting a Porch Stories event.
