We graze sheep to address issues of soil health. As the snow melts in spring, winter rodent damage becomes visible. This year, we see dense clusters of gopher tunneling. While this helps aerate soil, too much in a small area allows water to drain without hydrating surface soils. If we set up watering grounds or promote bedding grounds on gopher hills, we can encourage the sheep to tamp down the soil. You may have tamped down your espresso to prevent the water from passing through unevenly, or you may have used a tool to tamp down soil when planting a tree. Sometimes you make a difference without even realizing it. Several years ago, a farmer told us he stopped using rodenticide on his crops because our sheep were clearing the stubble and he didn't have any more rodent problems. Just a few days later, the news showed a massive die off, where swans ate rodenticide on someone else's farm. Since then, we have worked with many farmers to graze off stubble and reduce the use of chemicals. As migrating birds return to the valley, we are proud to have worked with so many farmers to create a safer habitat for birds like swans. #migration #natural #grandtetonlamb

We move our sheep almost every day. This takes a lot of work, but it is how we have been able to graze the same lands successfully for over a century. These ewes are just about ready to lamb, and we have herded them to rangeland near the lambing sheds. At this time of year, we want to keep the sheep out of cultivated farmland and on denser soils where their hooves will help rather than harm.
