I 💛 dandelions - the first sign of spring! I joke that the dandelion is the New York state flower… because they are everywhere here. Disclaimer: that’s not actually true! 🤎Wildflower Friday featuring Wild ginger (Asarum canadense reflexum)🤎 Another early bloomer of the springtime woodlands, and native to most counties of Illinois, you can see this one flowering from early to mid spring for around 3 weeks. Although the large, heart shaped leaves are easy to spot and often abundant on the forest floor, you have to look a little harder to find the single, small red-brown flower at the base of the plant. Pollinators include flies or beetles, while the seeds attract ants due to their fleshy appendages; making them effective at dispersing the seeds. The foliage is toxic and therefore not eaten by mammalian herbivores. Coined 'Wild Ginger' because the aromatic rhizomes have a ginger-like fragrance and flavor. Fresh or dried, they can be used as a substitute for the spice. There are a few different varieties of Wild Ginger, however this species is the most common variety of Wild Ginger in Illinois. It is identified by the large, slightly hairy heart shaped leaves with a deep indent at the base. Have you ever had fireweed honey? I think it's my favorite! I didn't see a lot of bumblebees in high elevations, until about 10 years ago. Then they became very noticeable. It turns out the Western Bumblebee was starting to reappear on the West Coast around that time. Of course they were hiding in the mountains! Trying to save themselves. Currently there are some bumblebee species in danger of extinction on the West coast, again. There are several organizations that are monitoring the population. The Pacific Northwest Bumblebee Atlas has been working on this for about 5 years. "The Pacific Northwest Bumble Bee Atlas is a collaborative effort to track and conserve bumble bees in Washington, Idaho and Oregon. It is a partnership between the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Idaho Department of Fish and Game, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the Xerces Society." You are invited to volunteer with this organization, by helping them survey their designated stations for Bumblebee populations in the summer.
