I want to give a special shoutout to my incredible father, who has always been my number one fan! This past weekend, I had a little issue and ended up in the ER. I still needed to finish getting things ready for my my upcoming show, where my artwork โAliceโ will be showcased. So, my dad went above and beyond to make sure I was okay and able to get things turned into the gallery on time. He spent the entire day with me, driving me around, helping me with all the preparations. From cutting my prints to downloading files last minute when my phone died, he did it all. And to top it off he did all that AND was by my side from early this morning, taking me to doctorโs appointments and dropping off my artwork at the gallery. I am beyond lucky and grateful to have such an amazing dad who has supported me (and my art) for over 40 years in EVERY way a person can be supported by their parent. Oh boy, here we goโฆ 7 years competing on the national circuit 6 years training full time 5 years away from home 4 years on Team Canada Itโs time for me to retire from speed skating. It was suggested to me that I should consider having my spleen removed, an exploratory surgery, to help prevent melanoma spreading to other organs and lymph nodes. (Melanoma can move anywhere!) I had researched the side effects I may encounter living without a spleen. People who lack their spleen, the organ that filters our bloodstream and helps our body fight infection, may live a normal, healthy life. The benefits of a splenectomy are that it can resolve several health issues such as blood diseases, cancer, and infection that could not be treated any other way. In 2004, the survival rate for melanoma cancer, at my stage, in fact was bleak. I was scared of the possibility of my teenage kids living without their Mom. I was not ready to leave them in someone elseโs hands just yet! The morning of March 18th, Dr Mosier and Dr Bustos performed a splenectomy, removed my appendix and my last ovary, along with some lymph nodesโthe reason I have slight swelling in my abdomen. โIf God showed you all He has planned for you, it would boggle your mind. TBT circa 1976. My parents still have this chair. It is a swivel, upholstered rocking chair. My parents didnโt have a lot of money with Mom a teacher and Dad a research chemist. But they did invest in really good furniture as they knew they wanted it to last. With three rambunctious kids who couldnโt stay out of trouble, this chair was not furnitureโฆit was โShugga-Death-Rideโ!
