The poster shows planes in a V formation displaying the Republican flag on their wings. The poster pays tribute to the Republican Air Force, which had remained more loyal than other parts of the military following the rebellion of July 1936. Marina Ginesta, a 17-year-old communist militant, overlooking Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War, 1936. Marina Ginestà became famous due to the photo taken by Juan Guzmán on the rooftop of Hotel Colón, Barcelona during the July 1936 military uprising in Barcelona. As she was a reporter, it was the only time Ginestà was carrying a gun. The rifle she is carrying is M1916 Spanish Mauser, manufactured at the famous Oviedo factory in Spain for the Spanish Army. Marina was a member of Juventudes Socialistas Unificadas (Socialist Youth), the youth organization mainly directed by Partido Comunista de España (PCE, Communist Party of Spain). As the war broke out, she served as a reporter and a translator assisting Mikhail Koltsov, a correspondent of the Soviet newspaper Pravda. Despite her initial involvement she quickly grew disillusioned with the path that the Stalinists were taking. Marina remained a militant throughout the rest of the war and was drawn to other groups at that time such as the anti-Stalinist P.O.U.M (which the famous writer George Orwell was a member of) and the Anarchist C.N.T. Before the end of the war, Ginestà was wounded and evacuated to Montpellier. Marina did not know about the photo until 2006, although the iconic image was printed and circulated everywhere, serving as cover for the book “Thirteen Red Roses” by Carlos Fonseca, and was also along with dozens of other photographs in the book “Unpublished images of the Civil War” (2002). She was identified by Garcia Bilbao who read the memoirs of Soviet correspondent of Pravda Mikhail Koltsov, with whom the young girl appears in another photo. Garcia Bilbao found that Jinesta Marina, with J, which was identified by Guzman in the caption was actually Marina Ginesta, an exile who lived in Paris translating French texts. Brigadista Jack Shirai Today at YPT, we wanted to tell the story of Jack Shirai, who died in the Spanish Civil War fighting fascists with with Abraham Lincoln Bridage. Jack Shirai was born in Japan in the early 1920s. As an orphan, he grew up in a monastery in Hakodate. In around 1930, Shirai traveled to the United States and began working as a cook in New York. There, in the midst of the Great Depression, he became involved in small communist groups. In 1936, Spain descended into civil war. Fascists under Francisco Franco rose up against the recently-elected Republican government. Opposing Franco were a coalition of republicans, communists, anarchists, and other socialists. People from all over the world volunteered to fight against Franco in Spain. Shirai joined the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, also known as the Lincoln Battalion, a group of about 2500 American volunteers first deployed to the Jarama Valley near Madrid. There, Shirai served both as a cook and at the front. Shirai died on July 6, 1937, fighting during the Battle of Brunete near Madrid. Today we remember Jack Shirai, of humble origins, who traveled all the way around the world to fight fascists. R31 recoge los testimonios de supervivientes de los bombardeos que sufrió Alicante por parte de los sublevados en 1938. El 25 de mayo de ese año el Mercado Central lleno de civiles, y lejos de cualquier objetivo militar, fue alcanzado por las bombas sin previo aviso de las sirenas antiaéreas. ________________________________________________________ Para este documental, mis compañeros de @runtunfilms me pidieron que compusiese el tema de cierre del documental. Para ello me inspiré en el trabajo del compositor alcoyano Carlos Palacio, en canciones de cuna de la época y en la delicadeza de los nocturnos de Chopin. El 25 de julio de 1938, en el río Ebro, el Ejército republicano lanza una furiosa ofensiva contra los franquistas. Comienza la célebre batalla del Ebro. La batalla del Ebro fue una batalla librada durante la Guerra Civil Española. Fue la batalla en que más combatientes participaron, la más larga y una de las más sangrientas de toda la guerra. Tuvo lugar en el cauce bajo del valle del Ebro, entre la zona occidental de la provincia de Tarragona (Tierra Alta) y en la zona oriental de la provincia de Zaragoza (Mequinenza) y se desarrolló durante los meses de julio a noviembre de 1938. Constituyó el enfrentamiento decisivo de la contienda, ya que en ella se decidió el final de la Guerra Civil, en un contexto europeo inmerso en la Crisis de los Sudetes, que parecía a punto de estallar, y que efectivamente acabaría uniendo la Guerra Europea con la Guerra de España. Aunque los Ejércitos republicanos lograron obtener una importante victoria inicial, sus ofensivas hicieron inevitable la derrota final del Bando republicano. Tras un gran número de bajas humanas y materiales del Ejército Popular de la República; y después de cuatro meses de lucha, las tropas republicanas volvieron a cruzar el río Ebro. Tras una ofensiva nacional, que se saldó en victoria, quedó sellado el destino de la Segunda República Española.
