#the100dayproject Day 6 - 100 things I learned Acknowledging the obvious can be really helpful. Sometimes we discount something that we know that seems obvious. We can give it a “yeah yeah yeah” or “of course. Obviously.” while still kind of discounting it or maybe even partially in denial. When my marriage ended last year, I knew I need to take a break from making wedding rings, so I did for awhile. As I got back into it, I felt a lot of resistance and wondered why I was avoiding working on orders. I actually had to sit and acknowledge and fully realize it still felt weird and kind of painful. I was able to reframe and adjust my thoughts and come back to making the rings in a much better place. It was an important step for me to pause and really accept the feelings I was having, even though they were very obvious. I’m happy to be back in a place again of enjoying making wedding and anniversary rings. First we make a beautifully finished half round wedding ring, with perfectly parallel sides and a perfectly polished surface….and then we take a Ball Pein hammer to it. 🔨 It sounds a bit strange to make a perfect wedding band first right? Well, the reason is you get a better finish afterwards. If you start with an even half round first and control your hammer, you end up with an even shape at the end, yes, even after it’s beaten! A perfectly even random finish. Textured Rose gold wedding bands and an elopement to the Isle of Skye. What could be more romantic? Jess and Danny knew quite early on what they were wanting to make for their wedding rings. As they were based in Newcastle, I sent out a ring sizer and some sample rings for them to try, roughly based on what they had told me they were looking for. Then, on the morning of their workshop, they were presented with their lengths of 9ct rose gold wire. Oval shape for Jess and D shape for Danny and then a quick swap over to make each other’s. Only a few hours later, these beauties appeared! Didn’t they do such a smashing job?! The colour and textures are just so devine. We had such a fab day and Jess and Danny were such a pleasure to teach. A day, I’m sure they will remember for a very long time. But THE day is still to come and I do hope they have the most amazing time and embrace all that beautiful Skye has to offer. I've had so many wonderful workshops since we opened back up again back at the beginning of May, and this one is no exception. The lovely Lisa & Darren got in touch earlier this year, as they were heading over to the UK from Seattle for a three-month tour across the four nations. While they were here in Scotland, they wanted to spend the day with myself in my studio, making their own wedding rings. After discussing with them over email, what they were hoping to make, and in what I ordered in the gold ready for their arrival. Because Lisa is highly allergic to nickel, a bit of research into the gold alloys were needed. Evidently, though the gold is nickel free, the solder to join the ring together, is not completely. It may not have made an impact as it is such a teeny tiny amount, but we decided not to take that risk, and instead make a silver ring first, and then have it cast identically in 18ct white gold. They did an absolute brilliant job! I love hammering these rings. I recently had to redo my pricing - the cost of metal has gone up so much and I had not caught up to the times. I adjusted some of my formulas at the same time and this design is now the least expensive of all my designs. They're just so fun to make. In a weird way it reminds me of when you're making bread and you get your hands all in there squishing the dough - the hammer marks get all layered and mixed up in to an even looking texture that is so satisfying. These wedding rings were designed and made for a lovely couple. I actually made their engagement ring too - I'll post that one soon, it's a beauty! They wanted an informal, hand finished look for their wedding bands, so we went for this beautiful hammered effect 😍 It might not come as a huge shock when I tell you the thinner band was for the lady and the thicker for the man! They wanted cohesive rings, but had slightly different criteria - she wanted a thin band made with 18ct yellow gold and he wanted a thicker band made with 18ct white gold. Despite being very different in both colour and thickness, the hammered effect on both means these rings look absolutely fab together! I do love mixing silver/platinum and gold together 🤍💛

Rustic and refined ⚒ Our classic domed wedding band updated with a hand hammered finish. This finish actually uses two hammers. Going through the photo archives and found this stunning matched wedding ring set from a few years ago. This Rivet Ring set is an excellent example of creative coordination in wedding bands. Identical designs in linear hammered palladium with flush-set blue sapphires and Canadian mined white diamonds. Each partner choose a different accent metal for the Rivet strip, a beautiful way to tie them both together.
