Carrying meat to a butcher shop at midnight in El Raval, Barcelona. While I’ve been concentrating on a project on the beach and another that stays within the historic limits of the Roman walls of the original city, I recognize that traces of history are everywhere. Just 500 meters from this spot, archaeologists in 2012 found the sandal of a Roman legionnaire. I imagine him arriving to Roman “Barcino,” and losing his sandal outside the walls of what was then a small town, perhaps returning from business in the city of Tarragona to the south, where the philosopher king Marcus Aurelius was governor before becoming the Emperor of Rome.

Taken in June, from my project “Into Dust…” The Revetlla de Sant Joan celebrates the summer solstice and with the influence of the Catholic Church, also honors the birthday of Saint John the Baptist. The fireworks and bonfires around the city had pagan origins as purification rites.
