Switching from plastic to paper seems like a straightforward win for the environment, right? Not so fast! Using paper for packaging only creates more pressure on forests. The number is staggering. Demand for paper packaging drives about a tenth of total logging pressure on the world’s forest, amounting to an estimated 3.1 billion trees cut down annually. We need real solutions. Hundreds of millions of tonnes of low-carbon Next Gen materials are burned or landfilled every year. Why waste waste? Wheat straw, hemp, and recycled paper are great alternatives to replace tree-based paper and plastic, taking pressure off forests—one of the most effective and actively operational carbon capture technologies on the planet. Of all my climate investigations these past 20 years it is the precarity of the Amazon which haunts me - its demise reverberates throughout the world’s environment… A recent NYT article by Manuela Andreoni, “Threats push Amazon Closer to Tipping Point Study Finds” (2/20/24), has heightened my dread, as well as driving/inspiring my practice. Since returning from four weeks in the Amazon rainforest, traveling its estuaries I’ve been motivated to add another panel to my 56 foot long world map series started in 2020( located on my website). That series of 50’x88” canvases references all the glaciers and coral reefs in the world, as well as the recent pandemic. i was motivated to make one charting all the rainforests- But that recent article on the Amazon at its tipping point haunted me as well. Hey everyone, Emma here 👋 Did you know that due to accelerated global warming, whole islands are being swallowed up by the sea? Slides 2 and 3 show the Solomon Islands, where kilometres of land are being lost to the ocean, and it is our fault. Sea level rise occurs for two reasons: eustatic change and isostatic change. 🌊 Eustatic change is what people tend to think of regarding sea level and climate change; when the sea level itself rises, due to land ice melting and increasing the volume of the water, and also thermal expansion, which occurs when the water temperature increases, causing the molecules to vibrate more and therefore increase the volume of the sea. 🌊 Isostatic change is when the land itself moves, causing the sea level to 'move' relative to the land (even though it doesn't move at all). There are a few categories of isostatic change: isostatic uplifting, downwarping, subsidence, and accretion. 🌊 Uplifting and downwarping occur when a great mass, such as land ice from the last ice age, is removed from the land, causing it to rise upwards as it no longer has any weight on it. This is uplifting, and Scotland, as well as many other places in the world, is experiencing this process. Uplifting in one place causes downwarping in another, where the land opposite to the uplifting area consequently begins to sink. This is happening in the south of England, along with other areas of the world. 🌊 Isostatic subsidence is what the ice, for example, causes, where the land sinks due to matter piled on top of it, which is called isostatic accretion. Climate change causes these eventualities by increasing the temperature of the water and melting land ice. This is part 1 of 2 posts on this matter. The next part will look at some areas directly affected by these issues. We're definitely reaping the effects of greed and zero foresight. We've been cutting down centuries-old trees in favor of more roads. Our car-centric culture, brought about by the Americans (who never repaired our war-damaged train system maybe because they wanted to sell us cars), means we have less trains now and more gas guzzlers on the road. And our official government policy is still favoring cars more than mass transit (check out how much more "expressways" this country is building). It boggles the mind, too, how all of these projects are being built by just one company. 🙄 Now, as we suffer one of the worst El Niño episodes in recent memory, we talk about planting more trees because we've definitely lost so much (and the current ones aren't enough anymore). We can still start now, of course (and by all means!), because this definitely isn't going to get any better as the years pass. Ipak, jedno nam je zajedničko: nakon Uskrsa, imaćemo pregršt kuvanih jaja. Ona u frižideru mogu da stoje i do nedelju dana, ali ne morate da ih konzumirate isključivo u njihovom izvornom obliku. . Pastirska pita sa jajima, pikantni krompir sa jajima, mesni rolat sa jajima, pa čak i neka egzotična jela kao što su nudle sa kuvanim jajima… Na internetu ćete pronaći bezbroj recepata kako možete upotrebiti kuvana jaja na neki manje očekivan način. . Blagovremena konzumacija hrane kojom raspolažemo je veoma bitno sredstvo u smanjenju prehrambenog otpada. Ali ne i jedino… . Sa tim ciljem hranu možemo i zamrzavati, a čak i neke ostatke – koje uobičajeno bacamo u kante za smeće – možemo iskoristiti za pravljenje ukusnih jela. Tako od ljuski od krompira (koje su, inače, pune vlakana) možemo napraviti hrskavi, začinjeni čips, a u lukovini farbati već pomenuta uskršnja jaja. . A znate za onu oznaku na namirnicama “najbolje upotrebiti do”? Nju veoma često možemo da ignorišemo – taj datum ne znači da je hrana odmah sutradan za bacanje, već označava minimalni period tokom kojeg proizvođač garantuje maksimalni kvalitet robe. . Ipak, pre upotrebe svakako savetujemo da pregledate i isprobate namirnice. . U Srbiji, svako od nas u proseku baca 108 kilograma hrane na godišnje, što je za 34 kilograma više od globalnog proseka. . The melting of the glaciers, a phenomenon that intensified in the 20th century, is leaving our planet iceless. Specifically, since the industrial revolution, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions have raised temperatures, even higher in the poles, and as a result, glaciers are rapidly melting, calving off into the sea and retreating on land. Worldwide, most glaciers are shrinking or disappearing altogether. Relative to 1970, the climate reference glaciers tracked by the World Glacier Monitoring Service have lost a volume of ice equivalent to nearly 25 meters of liquid water—the equivalent of slicing 27.5 meters of ice off the top of each glacier. This loss of ice has already reached 335 billion tonnes per year, which is 30% of the current rate of ocean growth. Rising temperatures cause glaciers to melt at accelerated rates, leading to ice loss, glacier retreat, and sea-level rise. This not only affects local ecosystems and water supplies but also contributes to global climate change by altering ocean circulation patterns and atmospheric conditions. Glacial meltwater also affects freshwater availability for communities downstream, impacting agriculture, industry, and biodiversity. Glacial melting will also cause the extinction of numerous species, as glaciers are the natural habitat of a number of animals, both terrestrial and aquatic. Not only this but glaciers have ancient viruses and bacteria that have been trapped that could potentially be released. Embedded in the layers of ice sheets are possible consequences for both human and environmental health. Scientists have addressed these viruses and bacteria as ‘pandora’s box’ i.e. they have no idea as to what lies beneath glaciers. With over millions of years of concentration of these unknown pathogens, this is just the tip of the iceberg. At Circular Economy Drive at SGNP Borivali Mumbai with Team Afroz Shah. Visited many tribal houses and interacted with tribals as well and collected their dry waste for recycling. The problem is that animals consume wet waste wrapped in dry waste. By doing this the dry waste is diverted from harming the environment. The clean air, smiling faces and simple village lifestyle is why I like coming to SGNP. For Earth week, I did a challenge with students to not use my car for one week. Well, only 12 students out of 500 participated. This didn’t surprise me and I am just glad I wasn’t alone. We could walk, ride our bike or use public transportation. Getting off fossil fuels is not easy and here is what I learned: ☀️ Not using my car was good for my health. I walked so much more, especially when after walking all day the bus dropped me off a 30 minute walk from Church. It was pouring rain. A note that my @patagonia coat kept me dry. 🚌 The bus system in Ottawa is not very handy for people who live in the suburbs. It took me on the weekend one hour and 30 minutes to get to an eco market in the Alta Vista part of town. Maybe when the new lines of our electric train system get built, it’ll be less time consuming to use public transit. By car, I would have gotten to my market in 25 minutes. 🌏 The challenge was explained by my grade 6 class to each class of the school. Out of 500 students, only 12 participated. 🥺 I’m not sure what this means. The challenge allowed each child to take their family car twice during the week. Many students had told me they wanted to join the challenge but their parents, who were asked to sign the contract, wouldn’t. We talk about how climate change needs to be stopped, but I suppose few people are ready to make changes in their lives to stop climate change. Not using a car is very time consuming and with busy schedules, parents probably have enough on their plate. I congratulated the students who did do the challenge. One student did a carpool to get to girl guides! I feel I should be thankful that at least 12 students joined in. 🚙 When you’re determined, car pooling is often possible. When I asked all the teachers who were going to my Board for training if someone could carpool with me, one teacher offered to pick me up. I was so thankful as it would have been another hour and a half bus ride to get to my Board. Have you ever thought of getting by without your gaz powered car?
