March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, and Paws and Stripes train service dogs with skills for those who are affected by brain injuries. Our service dog program is available to Veterans who have at least three tasks that a dog can do to directly address a disability. The VSD program is a rigorous course lasting roughly 12 months. Dedicated Veterans must commit to at least 15 hours of work each week including therapeutic services and canine training to graduate with a Paws and Stripes Service Dog. On my way to my Salon in the evening I spotted a small pup and mother running in the middle of the busy road. I stopped my car and tried to save the pup from coming under cars, autos and bus. With the help of my caretaker and other locals we managed to catch the pup but the mother ran away in fear. It was getting dark and after a long search we had to give up. It was very traumatic for me as well as the one and a half month old pup and mom to be separated. Took the pup to the vet. Got him checked for Parvo and after a tick bath at the vet took him to my shelter where he stayed in the room with my caretaker. I was told that a car had abandoned the mother and two pups near that road. Don’t know what happened to the other pup but the pup with the mother wd not have survived if we had not taken her off the busy road. The next morning I went to the same place where I had spotted them and saw the mother. She ran and crossed the road when she saw me. I put her pup down on the road holding her at the same time. She came back when she saw her pup. I was scared she would bite me but she was trembling and came close to me. It was such a relief to see the pup who was scared wag his tail when she saw her mom. I stayed with the mother and pup for an hour and I could see I had won her trust. I held her pup and walked towards my shelter. She followed me. It was such a relief to see them safe together. Looking for a loving home for them.
