Cookeville, TN Cream City originally opened in the late 1890’s as Consumer City in the same proximity as it is now. Consumer City made milk and other dairy products which were shipped to the north by covered wagon. The Whitaker family owned the dairy manufacturing business, and through its evolution the name changed to Cream City. In 1948, the building that housed Cream City at that time burned down. A new building was constructed and completed in 1950 and is the same building which stands today. At the time of the new construction, a 3-ton neon sign was erected on top of the building proving to be a tourist attraction along Highway 70. The neon sign has been featured in several magazines and was named one of the top 100 neon signs in the country by American Road Magazine and we definitely agree! In 1986, a prominent ice cream company purchased Cream City Ice Cream to shut it down as its production became a major competitor. After this, the existing building housed many other businesses. The structure became what it was meant to be again in 2011 when Cream City Ice Cream and Coffee House opened the doors to the public once again as an ice cream shop. Well, here we are again. We knew we wanted new tires for the trailer but we were having trouble finding the ones that we wanted in stock near us. Unluckily we blew a second tire before we found them. Luckily we blew it near a shop that did carry the tires we wanted. We got tires that support more weight and are built stronger than the old tires. I was down this road today through the very special #uteland where #rocksarealive in #utah. On the way, at a view spot, I spoke to a Navaho elder through her granddaughter translating for us. I ended up telling her about a huge magnificent Black Bear I saw in Northern California 6 days ago that passed in front of my car on a narrow dirt road, and climbed up the embankment on the side. It then turned its whole front around to look at me and stared right into my eyes! Bears I told her I usually see darting quickly into the thicket, never ever has one looked at me like that. I’ve been in awe of this encounter ever since. Although I don't necessarily define myself as a "documentary photographer," because, after all, at a certain level all photographers are documentarians because we "document" the things we photograph. This is on my mind because I scrolled pas this image from several years ago, one that I didn't post at the time. Images from this series caused a major hack on my Instagram feed -- someone, as far as I could determine, who was some sort of "christian" warrior who didn't like their religion portrayed negatively. Without getting into the politics of things, my intent was only to photograph this scene. It's an interesting coincidence that I found this mage, made with a 4x5 large format camera, because this place is now cleared of all signage and looks like any other old building along Interstate 70. I never visited this place when it was a run-down Elvis museum, which is how many people remember it. But, now I have the photographs I made on a wintry day. They are documents of that time and place. And they are reminders of what once was. Work continues on our Highway 70 Soldier Pile Retaining Wall Project. Located in a dangerous corridor of the Feather River Canyon this job has proven to be exceptionally difficult, however work has successfully progressed in the installation a 2,250 ft retaining wall. Ultimately, the wall reduces river erosion and stabilizes the highway. An eerie silence in the Feather River Canyon is broken by the sound of Norfolk Southern 1073 leading a lengthy intermodal train through Pulga, California. The NS 1073 is dedicated to the failed Penn Central Railroad. The Penn Central was created by the merger of the Pennsylvania and New York Central Railroads. The Penn Central Railroad only operated between 1968 and 1976 before declaring bankruptcy. It was then merged into the ConRail Company, which was later merged into the Norfolk Southern and CSX networks. Recent heavy rains wreaked havoc on the Feather River Canyon. Due to a rock slide and derailment near Belden, Union Pacific’s Canyon Subdivision had been out of service for nearly a week. Highway 70 was also closed due to rock slides. Union Pacific and BNSF were forced to detour all trains via Donner Pass and the Shasta Route. The NS 1073 was one of the first trains to run through the canyon once the derailment was mitigated.
