On the website the 2024 cask strength is labeled as Bourbon even though it is not on the bottle. It looks like the website needs some updating as it still lists the old proof under technical information. The 2024, is listed as “A blend of straight bourbon and straight rye whiskeys ranging in age from 6-10 years, blended and specially selected from the mountains of Utah.” I can taste the Rye in the 2024, so this is more like a cask strength Bourbon vs a cask strength Bourye. I've only heard great things about this limited release rye whiskey from High West, but have never had the chance to taste it, let alone get a bottle. So when I was browsing a local liquor store chain and saw it on the shelf, it was a no-brainer that I had to get one. I cracked into it last night and man oh man! It was so good!! The port barrel finish on this is perfect! It's a great balance of aromatic rye with sweet Berry notes from the port barrels. Needless to say... The Mrs and I (mostly me! 🤣) made a big dent in this bottle. There's only about half a bottle left. I need to pick up another bottle. High West Campfire 2017 vs 2023 Both versions of the High West Campfires are blends of straight rye, straight bourbon, and blended scotch malt whiskey. However, the specifics of each are unknown but expected to be slightly different between these two years. On its own the 2023 remains unique and delicious and is very close to the 2017. However, when directly compared, you can detect a youthfulness in the 2023. Unfortunately comparing the 2023 to the 2017 is like going to test drive a car but then also test driving the turbo version of the same car. Except they don’t make the turbo version any more. We're incredibly excited for tonight's online tasting with High West's Master Distiller Brendan Coyle, as we take an epic journey through 12 High West expressions, including many rare distillery exclusives, single barrels and more. Last time we welcomed Brendan was on Dec. 16, 2020, at a time when High West was a transformation process following their aquisition by Constellation -- eliminating Yippee Kaiyay and making Bourye much more limited. Now is arguably an equally key transformative moment in the distillery's history, as they transition to utilizing more of the whiskey they make in house and navigate some key staff changes in the leadership team. Interesting...🧐 This whisky smells beautifully of both rye and peat. However, when you get it in your mouth, the peat is dominant. You get lots of campfire smoke, light tar and dry tobacco. Added to this are fleeting rye flavors, juicy honeydew melon and bourbon sweetness. This one goes in every direction ↙️↖️↗️🔀🔄 In my book, this product tries too hard.
