Things start to get messy when Miles and Edgar fall in love with the lovely Madeline (Virginia Madsen). An artificially intelligent computer that falls in love? I’m thankful this didn’t go down the “Demon Seed” route. Both a time capsule and ahead of its time, “Electric Dreams” has many electrifying aspects though it does have its flaws. To be nice, I’ll start off with what I liked about the movie. Though we don’t see his face, the vocal performance of the weird but wondrous Bud Cort as Edgar is fantastic. Maybe it’s because I’m a fan of the guy, but he always gives it his all especially if the movie is mediocre or terrible. There’s also some good cinematography and the soundtrack is very 80s, but very good. When you look this movie up, it has a very mixed reception and I can see why it does. The first half of the movie is rather dull and boring; it only gets engaging around the 37 minute mark and dear God, Von Dohlen is horrible. I’m sure he’s been good in other films, but he’s completely monotone throughout. How does the computer have more emotion than the human? Is “Electric Dreams” dated? In an interview about his book EASY RIDERS, RAGING BULLS, Peter Bart, the vice-president of production for Paramount Pictures said, “To me, HAROLD AND MAUDE was a symbol of that era. It would have been unthinkable in the ‘80s or ‘90s. In those days [the late ‘60s] people would walk in, wacked out, with the most mind-bending, innovative, and brilliant ideas for movies. HAROLD AND MAUDE was written by a pool cleaner.” This is true and the pool cleaner in question was a man named Colin Higgins, who wrote HAROLD AND MAUDE for his UCLA MFA thesis film. Higgins was working a few handy-man jobs in exchange for housing when he met Edward Lewis, producer of SPARTACUS. The script was brought up the ladder but Higgins, who wanted to direct the film himself, didn’t impress Paramount with his director’s test, which is why Hal Ashby ended up with the job (and the cute cameo pictured here). #mood #fbf My soundtrack this morning. Harold and Maude is one of my all-time fave films. It was released when I was in high school. My mom and step-dad lived in Benicia. I saw this film with them during a visit. We saw it at the multiplex inside Sun Valley Mall in Concord. In those days, they'd let you stay in the theater for the next showing without paying again, which is what we did with Harold and Maude.
