Lucky no. 13 of #52WeeksOfDesign is the fabulous woman behind the beloved il Buco restaurants @donna_lennard. She also has a hand in design with her curated tabletop and home decor shop @ilbucovita - how does she do it all with such perfection?! Donna was born in NYC and raised in Chappaqua, her father traded in metals and her mother stayed home raising her and her two sisters. She fell in love with La Dolce Vita when she was 17 years old, spending 6 weeks as an exchange student living with a Sardinian family in Cagliari. Mesmerized by the simple Italian cooking and fresh ingredients she felt totally at home. Years later she would return to this feeling as she opened up an antique shop on Bond Street with her Italian partner Alberto Avalle. This shop soon became the il Buco restaurant that we New Yorkers know and love. She is celebrating the restaurant’s 30th anniversary this year, a huge feat anywhere let alone in NYC! She has gone on to open up many successful offshoots of il Buco to create the il Buco Family. In 2014 she went back to il Buco’s roots by opening il Buco Vita - a curated tabletop and home decor line inspired by the Italian objects, colors and patinas that have made her restaurants so authentic and inviting. Il Buco Vita has a shop in NYC, Amagansett and NOW she has expanded to the West Coast! All of the gorgeous images in this post are from the LA store. Some of us have eaten at IL Buco especially the one at Bond Street. Since 1994. This started as a rustic antique store and feels like an Italian farmhouse. When I heard about the holiday sip and shop at IL Buco Vita in a loft in the East Village on December 11th, 2021. I was interested. This home goods store has new and antique items like pottery, plates, tiles, dinnerware, pitchers, serving pieces and others from central and southern Italy. You can see some unusual items. The staff was very friendly and professional. The owner and founder, Donna Lennard, filmmaker from Duke and NYU was on hand. She was happy to have a live event. She was bartending while Alberto from Umbria was the head waiter. Also, there was Alberto Avalle, her former Italian partner in business and life. They split amicably in 2000. He was the producer of La Raccolta, short documentary film. While looking we enjoyed tasty coquettes, finger sandwiches with truffle, and others, along with red wine, white wine, rose sparkling and others.
