• G O L D E N • H O U R • I grew up in what many would describe as a stereotypical Italian household, surrounded by big meals prepared and eaten together, talking with big gestures about family in loud supportive ways — a quintessential upbringing. When my mother died, she was living paralyzed full-time in a hospital for nine years. I always appreciated my mom, I'd say she gave me all my best qualities: optimism, my care for responsibilities, and an earnestness for honesty and openness. My father was a typical patriarch, worked himself to the grave, always gone during the week putting in long hours behind a desk. He talked about my brother’s and my responsibilities to ourselves, pursuing not just independence, but life without expecting anything from anybody. I laud my folks for many of these ideals. If we wanted something, we had to work for it. So we did. My brother and I threw ourselves into work like goddamned coalminers; our blackened lungs taking the form of stress, ulcers, and nary a vacation. Work would save us, as it had for my father. But work didn’t save my father. When he died, he was working at 70+ years old. As he aged, in some ways he began resenting work. He pushed my brother and I to pursue degrees; I went to business school first, then engineering school, & came out of the hazy mirk straddling a workaholic mindset. I worked two, then three jobs at a time while in grad school part-time. The stress physically manifested everywhere. I knew I was killing myself. I didn’t particularly love life. I hadn’t lived in the moment pretty much ever up to that point. Soon I was diagnosed with the big C, lymphoma. A single lump on my neck, no bigger than a marble hiding under a napkin, taught me the error of my ways. How it feels to know our fragile hastened dash. It's up to us to determine life's significance for ourselves. It's not some graceful run towards enlightenment, it's a sloppy trip filled beautiful mess. A reminder: we aren’t living to work; we’re working to live. And most of us have forgotten the latter half. Song of the Day: Pynch - "Somebody Else"

Nearly got a decent rainbow this afternoon! Quite a lot of work has been done out at the spit since I was there last with the handrails, steps and places to sit down and now I think about it at my age I'm going to need those soon

• S A N • L U I S • O B I S P O • I remember how devastating it was to lose my father. By then, it was a couple of years since I lost my mother. I remember this feeling cleaning out their house, thinking about all their belongings, and how I wanted to keep as much as possible. I packed my place with their furniture, a hideous décor. I never liked their things as a kid, but I wanted their stuff in my world to feel, I suppose, the dissipating warmth of their proximity. It’s easy to see how people become pack rats. When you’ve had almost nothing, you want your life to feel secure and insulated, “I might need this,” you'll say to yourself often. As time passes, it’s been a few years since the binds from yesterday were released. I realize now that things do not define us. It’s in the armchair philosophy older folks tell younger folks, “You can’t buy happiness, the stuff we own quickly owns us.” Over the last year, I’ve parted ways with tons of things belonging to my parents. I’ve sold my dad’s beloved VW, my own as well, ridden my world of furniture, put things on craigslist, or to a donation facility. Incidentally, and this is true, anytime I get rid of something I feel slightly better. When I reached my 30s, I hit a turning point with material possessions. I still own things, but the quantity is falling. I’ve come to the realization that materialism is a sickness. To know why we need so many things, we have to identify why we are buying stuff in the first place. I wasn’t buying needs. I was insecure, living for the momentary bliss experienced when buying something, that fleeting, hastened mortality of impulse purchase. I live clutter-free today. I worry a lot less about stuff and harbor great ease in letting go. It feels good now that the past has no binds. There’s freedom in being in control over my life. This absolutely bewildering yet liberating sense of not knowing how or where things will be in a year or two. Rushing forth is this desire to live for the moment constantly, to keep chasing the horizons, to meet and find more members of my tribe, and to experience it all. Song of the Day: CRV – “Ghost"

• B I G • S U R • When photography came into my life I was in a different state of mind. I was running on empty for years, likely decades. And it took awhile for the art to emerge, all I saw was the craft. The only professional photos I had known at that point were classic iconics, folks shooting for Nat Geo, images of great landmarks, always with film and always in the fully committed romantic sense of delivering pure reality. I arrived late, in the digital world, though I made images for years. The idea of "photographer" seemed all the more questionable in an era where everyone has several cameras and how easy and ubiquitous editing software is in the gram age. The thing about photography is that even though it's a medium that basically implies the notion of sharing, the real truth is its intimacy. Almost every great photographer I've met has started their history with how much they love taking pictures for themselves. It occurs to me that if it's a passion, then it NEEDS to be personal. It can't be anything else. It has to start with you. And like any art form, if you're honest with yourself, the output reflects the real you without much intentionality. It's that intimate. And that's how I fell in love with making photos. Hell, being creative in general--it's more than photos. Being with anyone who has a deep and meaningful relationship with a passion has a glint in their eye. They understand there's more to living than simply making money. That it's within the circumstances of great experience imbuing us with the creative fodder. The full spectrum. All the mania, darkness and everything between, the real palate. That, in creating we find a deeper meaning for living and facing intimate emotions we canon upon the medium. Song of the Day: Robert Lester Folsom - "See You Later, I'm Gone"

• A V I L A • B E A C H • I want to do everything. That’s how it feels most of the time. There’s always this badgering sense of wanting to explore. And it’s tough because only three years ago I was on the road, putting 9,500 miles on a fatiguing car, the most ambitious road trip I’ve ever taken. Seeing places I hadn’t known existed in a domestic backyard. And I haven’t really looked at the images from that trip, still. It’s like, they're shot, then added to my archives coldly. Some days, I leaf through the seemingly infinite pages of raw files hunting for something to catch my eye, I’ve learned to trust my gut from this meditation. When I first started taking photos, I had this idea when I'd look at a moment in the present, and say to myself, “What’s the star of the show, in this scene?” And that would be my subject, I’d wander around, change angles, lenses, all of it, in an attempt to get as many compositions of the subject possible. Then they're added to the archive to be evaluated later, with a hopefully more objective mind. Sometimes you can’t trust initial creative judgements. My favorite photographs are typically frames I did not realize I’d love while capturing the image. Other times you know it's portfolio—one of the great summits. Mostly, you don’t know even when you think you nailed it. You get home and the image feels soulless. It’s hard to account for the phenomenon. Whenever I write an article, I have what I call the “sleep on it” edit. I’ll write a piece, stop, call it a night and re-read the next day, sometimes a week later when I have different objectivity. In creativity, I believe you need a clear head as much as technical skills or raw go for it. Objectivity, a constant, nagging source of creative growth. Looking at something as it is, not how you wish it were. You'll occasionally get these breakthroughs where everything feels right and, during the next morning edit it still feels right. That’s when you know you’ve created something for yourself and it’s yours. That’s you—your soul—out there so to speak. And you just let it be. Song of the Day: Blue Hawaii – “Lilac”

• T H E • S O U T H W E S T • More than anything else I wish I were on the road. I need perspective, and the best place to get it is on a big trip. Time to start planning. Song of the Day: Giant Drag - "This isn't It"

As I share this photo my heart breaks for Ukraine. 💔 This crazy war has caused so much sadness and pain. 😢 Tanks rolling in, bombs exploding, people dying… Fear and despair fill the air… the sound of children crying. But we all know that nothing will last forever... This awful war will end… hopefully, sooner rather than later. I want to see the day that they can walk out to a park and watch their children play. I want to see them taking selfies, enjoying coffee with a friend at their local cafe. I want to see them posting fun videos with their families... laughing and celebrating LIFE. I want to see the world help put an end to this senseless strife! Let’s hope and pray that the day will come when the people of Ukraine can stop fearing for their lives. Because just like you and I… all they want is to kiss their loved ones - and sleep peacefully at night. ❤️ PEACE. 🕊 #instagood  #instaphotos  #imagegrind  #travelandlifestyle  #artofvisuals  #visualambassadors  #amazing_shotz  #sky_sultans  #gramslayers  #peaceforukraine  #ig_epicshotz  #australiagram  #beautifuldestinations  #ig_australia  #wowaustralia  #uniquesydney  #lovingsydneylife  #ilovesydney  #visitnsw  #australia  #sydney  #sydneylifestyle  #sky_australia  #gameoftones  #theworldwemakeit  #photographylover  #thephotosociety  #awesome_photographers  #awesome_earthpix
