Often times, through their own research, patients may come in requesting a CC volume based on other post-operative results they’ve seen online. “My implants feel too far apart.” This woman felt like her implants had continued to move apart (towards her armpit) over time. This causes loss of cleavage centrally and can make the width of the chest seem wider. But what exactly is it, and how does it affect your breast augmentation results? ⠀ Breast implant profile is the overall silhouette of the implant. It refers to how much an implant projects forward from the chest wall when standing. ⠀ Illustrations and graphics are often used to help show profile, but I find that seeing actual patients gives a much better idea of how profile affects a breast augmentation result. ⠀ This photo shows the differences between the 4 main profiles: low profile, moderate profile, moderate plus profile, and high profile. ⠀ You’ll notice that the higher the profile, the more volume there is at the upper part of the breast. Breast Implant Profile refers to how far off the chest wall the implant will extend. It is important to understand that for any given implant volume, the higher the profile, the narrower the implant. All implant manufacturers offer a variety of implant profiles. For example, Natrelle offers five profile options. Low profile projects the least and is the widest option. Extra Full profile is the highest projection implant and is the narrowest option for any given volume. In between these options we have Low Plus, Moderate, and Full profile options. Following mastectomy, low profile implants are typically used for women that are not looking for larger breasts. Moderate offers more projection while the Full or Extra Full profiles are the most dramatic. Deciding what profile implant is right for you is based on the look you want and your anatomy. The “drop & fluff” aka the period of healing after a breast augmentation can take about 3-6 months (though most healing will be finalized by about a year post op). My patient is pictured 2 weeks post op compared to 6 weeks post op. You’ll notice her breasts in the before photo are slightly pointy. High, moderate, and low profiles don't refer to how high on the chest they appear or how much upper breast fullness will occur. They refer to the projection out from the chest. Importantly, the biggest factor for projection is the implant volume, not so much the profile. That's why I use the moderate plus profile, a good choice for most breast augmentations.
