4.26 - Happy 55th Bday to The Isley Brothers’ 1969 LP (T-Neck), “It’s Our Thing”! After two mostly disappointing albums for Motown, The Isley Brothers were released from the label and free to take their music in whatever direction they wished. Freed from the constraints of the Motown machine, the brothers from Cincinnati showed the world exactly what they were capable of. Released on their own label, T-Neck (which was distributed by Buddha Records at that time), “It’s Our Thing” showcases the soon to be iconic Isley sound of funky grooves with a hint of rock and roll. The album is ten tracks of original material written, produced and played by the band. In comparison, The Isley Brothers didn’t have any original material on their previous album for Motown. The lead single, “It’s Your Thing”, was a smash hit as it climbed all the way to #2 on the R&B charts. Other hits from the record include “Give The Women What They Want” and “I Know Who You Been Socking It To”. “It’s Our Thing” is the perfect title for this album as The Isley Brothers let the world know that they were in complete creative control. Ronald, Kelly, Rudolph and Ernie were prepared to succeed or fail based on their own songs and vision. And succeed they did. “It’s Our Thing” was their first top 25 pop hit and reached #2 on the R&B charts. Das die Beat-Bands der 60er ein großes Repertoire an #coversongs aufführten, ist kein großes Geheimnis. Auch die Beatles spielten bei ihren Shows zahlreiche und packten auf ihr Debutalbum sechs Stück mit drauf. Das bekannteste ist vermutlich ihre Version des heutigen #simonssongoftheday. Dabei sagte John Lennon über seinen Gesang: "Ich schämte mich fürchterlich für die Aufnahme, denn ich sang diese Nummer sonst besser. Heute stört es mich nicht mehr. Man hört, dass ich einfach ein etwas überdrehter Typ bin, der sein Bestes gibt.“ Johns heisere Stimme trug dazu bei, dass die Single in den USA sofort Platz 2 erreichte und innerhalb von 3 Wochen über eine Million Mal verkauft wurde. George Martin war sich bewusst, dass man sich mit Twist and Shout die Stimmbänder ruinieren konnte. Deshalb wurde der Song als letzter der 15-stündigen Aufnahme-Session 1963 aufgenommen. Es blieben gerade mal 15 Minuten Studiozeit dafür. Inspiriert wurde ihre Version von der der Isley Brothers, die sie 62 veröffentlicht hatten. Ebenfalls in nur 10 Minuten aufgenommen, wurde es ihre erste Single, die es in die Top 20 der Billboard Hot 100 Charts schaffte. 2010 wurde sie in die Grammy Hall of Fame aufgenommen. Zu ihrer Version kam es, weil Bert Berns, der den Song mit Phil Medley geschrieben hatte, mit der Aufnahme der Originalversion unzufrieden war. Sie hatten aus dem Song Shout der Isley Brothers und Twist-Passagen, die sie mit einer La-Bamba-Adaption verbunden, den Song kreiert. Ursprünglich als Shake it up, Babe betitelt, hatten sie ihn 1961 mit dem Rhythm-&-Blues-Duo Top Notes aufgenommen. Die Produktion, an der auch der noch unerfahrenen Phil Spector beteiligt war, verlief aber problematisch. Berns war in den Besucherraum verbannt und kommentiert ihn mit: „Leute, ihr habt mein Stück kaputt gemacht!“ Die Single der Top Notes wurde ein Flop. Bereits 62 hatten Booker T. and the M.G.s eine Instrumental-Version aufgenommen. Happy 41st anniversary to The Legendary Isley Brothers 1983 Between The Sheets album. Between the Sheets is the 22nd album released by The Isley Brothers on their T-Neck imprint on April 24, 1983. The album is notable for the title track, the follow-up hit “Choosey Lover”, and the ballad “Touch Me”. The group returned to Bearsville Studios in November 1982 to work on the album. Like previous albums, all the instrumentation and composition was handled by Chris Jasper, Ernie Isley and younger brother Marvin. Some songs were initially devised as songs for a splinter project the trio were working on. Eventually, however, lead singer Ronald Isley sought interest in a few of the tracks, including the title song, which was composed by the trio of Jasper and the younger Isley brothers in response to Marvin Gaye’s hit, “Sexual Healing”. Adding additional composition, Ronald helped to compose “Choosey Lover” with the younger brothers with the melody based on Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Devotion”. Much like The Real Deal, Jasper and the other Isleys began adding background vocals to the tracks, whereas in previous Isley records, the vocals had been handled primarily by Ronald and older brothers Kelly and Rudolph. Released the following April, the album returned the Isleys to the top of the R&B album charts and also peaked at number 19 on the Billboard 200. Both “Between the Sheets” and “Choosey Lover” became top ten hits. “Ballad for the Fallen Soldier” and “Let’s Make Love Tonight” were released as promotional singles. Although it was not a single, the ballad “Touch Me” was also a hit. Eventually the album was certified platinum by the RIAA for shipments of one million copies alone in the US. The following year, Ernie, Marvin and Chris Jasper left the group and formed Isley-Jasper-Isley. This is one of my all time favorite Isley albums ever right along with the Spend The Night LP. 4.24 - Happy 41st Bday to the Isley Brothers’ 1983 LP (T-Neck), “Between The Sheets”! After dominating the charts in the 1970’s (nine straight top 5 R&B albums/ six top 10 pop albums), the Isley Brothers had seen their chart position slip a little with 1981’s “Inside You” and 1982’s “The Real Deal”. To be fair, both albums charted in the top 10 on the R&B charts, but, the group had slipped on the pop charts to #45 and #87, respectively. Neither album produced any hit singles for the band. Music was changing in the early 80’s and the hard charging funk and rock sounds that had made the Isley Brothers famous was no longer topping the charts. Instead, popular music was featuring more synthesizers and an overall computerized feel. With that in mind, the Isley Brothers went into the studio in late 1982 and re-emerged with an album that would once again return them to the top of the R&B charts and into the pop top 20. “Between The Sheets” is not the Isley Brothers’ best album from beginning to end, but, it does feature their all-time classic “Between The Sheets” ( #3 R&B) and the outstanding “Choosey Lover” ( #6 R&B). The Isley Brothers had modernized their sound and the results were fantastic. The band from Cincinnati, Ohio, had proved that they would be around for years to come.
