Humongous Thank you to every single person who travelled far and wide to see us today! Well! 🤪what can we say ? Life sometimes gives you blooming lemons 🍋 and you just gotta dig deep and make some sweet lemonade ! 🤭 Todays LIVE event in Birmingham didn’t go exactly to plan ! We went off script a tad today, we ad-libbed. We swore, cursed and even wanted to cry at some points during this event ! ☺️ But regardless of the microphone malfunctions, white noise and lack of videos, we had fun and shared our passion and pedagogy. We expelled some myths, answered most frequently asked questions and discussed all things Play, brain and evolutionary development. We talked about challenges in childhoods, sedentary life styles, taco babies, restricted movement and container babies We discussed an holistic approach, continuous provision and WHY we do what we do! Who is is for and what’s the purpose? We talked about aesthetics, Maslow’s Heirachy of needs and the American philosopher John Dewey ! A super simple invitation to create with play dough for Pre-Kindy this week. Yesterday I left some paper off cuts on the play dough table (by accident) and I was so amazed to see that the children used these scraps to make all sorts of creations. I’M BACK 🤩 After moving down south, I have secured a part time contract for the term teaching Pre-Kindy! I have absolutely loved using the teacher side of my brain to prep and plan again 🤪 We went to Perth last week and I raided my mums shed for some bits and pieces that would be age appropriate! This particular fine motor activity was SO popular today and the PKs loved it. Open any toy catalogue or wander down the aisle in any toy shop, browse to the section marked ‘construction’ & you’ll easily find a vast array of primary coloured resources. Ticking a box and meeting an area of development & learning. Marked as construction toys or Constructive play.’ 🥺 Hay presto children are developing expressive arts, creating, building & designing!? Is this what Piaget had in mind when he said children engage in types of play that reflect their level of cognitive development: First functional play then constructive play? Constructive or construction play “teaches children to be flexible thinkers (Bruner 1972), and develops a sense of control and self-esteem by encouraging children to control their environment (Chaille 2008)” reference - Community Play things But when did it become ‘normality’ to fill our settings, schools & Early Years centres with self limited resources? Having to buy MORE and MORE plastic products to enable children to construct with fluidity ? Constructive play cannot be defined by a chapter in a ‘resource catalogue’ because constructive play is open & unwritten. It’s in the child’s imagination, own creativity & their minds eye. Sadly however through the use of plastic toys we ARE restricting what children build and construct because these resource are ‘limited in their usage! (Horizontal and vertical construction ) 😨 At The Curiosity Approach we look to step beyond traditional norms of Early Years and allow children to play without limitations. To use their creativity, imagination & curiosity, through the use of Loose parts, opened resources, recycled materials & elements of nature. Menopause ? Did you know according the British Menopause Society they found that 45% of women felt that menopausal symptoms had a negative impact on their work Are you struggling at the moment ? Working in Early years is a physically demanding job. You never stop do you? There is always something to do, someone or something to pick up, lift up or carry. Getting up and down off the floor now that can be a challenge can’t it ? Have you got swollen hands and joints? This can be a symptom of menopause, I know because I ( Stephanie) struggle with painful and swollen fingers ( posted about this a few months ago) If anyone is struggling - supplement of marine collagen helps and increase your water intake. Doesn’t help with increased trips to the loo! Sorry x 😱 also crossing your legs when you sneeze 😂 Also heated paraffin wax bath for hands is very soothing🥰 Bit messy though x Maybe you forget the simplest of words or children’s names? Hot flushes, a fiery furness starting from the inside out! So strong it can make you feel physically sick and light headed. Gotta escape ? Gotta get into the cool air and stand outside ? Irritable? Low mood? Depression? All women experience menopause differently. Symptoms can be physical, such as hot flushes, headaches, poor sleep and erratic periods, or psychological, such as anxiety, low mood, lack of confidence and poor concentration. For decades we have been expected to PLAN, plot and formalise activities and events that will be happening within our baby rooms and settings. To make them conform and fit to the chosen topic or theme and to be constantly thinking of new ideas and activities! Ohhhh MY ! Let’s STOP WAIT a minute Let’s pause, reflect and consider and REMEMBER Babies are born with an intrinsic desire to be curious, to find out, investigate, touch discover and learn. To get moving 🎉 Sensorimotor Senses - movement Everything to a baby is new and exciting! If a baby is moving, they are learning. If they are handling and negotiating with objects, items, their surroundings they are learning! Even if they are playing with their toes they are learning! ❤️ The best thing we can do as Early Years educators is to reframe our thinking, to TRUST in our understanding of child development, brain development and TRUST in the child 🎉🙌🏼 To ensure we provide a safe, stimulating environment. Say what you want to see, not the actions you don't want. "Run on the grass please" "Throw balls (not toys)" "We bite food (not people)" "Please put your shoes away" (not throw them) This provides children with clear expectations/instructions and gives them alternative options of behaviour. This helps children understand the situation and develops their thinking and problem solving skills by knowing why and finding creative ways to act within expectations. (Maybe you could crawl or tip toe on the concrete instead of running...) From "don't run" to "run on the grass, please" From "stop/quiet" to "when I am finished then you can talk".
