π‘Monday SoR Miniπ‘ Are you using 3 cueing in your literacy practice? There isnβt a whole lot of understanding in todayβs classrooms about what exactly the three cueing system is. Many Australia teachers havenβt had any sort of formal training in theories of reading that use this system because it is so outdated and now debunked but still, the practice pervades the Australian education system as it has been passed down from teacher to teacher. Have you ever asked a student to βskip the wordβ, βlook at the pictureβ or βwhat would make sense here?β when reading? Because me too! Little did I know that although good intentioned, these practices are not based on evidence and actually mimic the behaviours of poor readers. So if we know 3 cueing is dead in the water, then why are we still hanging onto assessment practices that promote them?!?! Thatβs right, you will find a PM Benchmark Assessment box in pretty much every school. I remember the faith I used to place in this trusty red box. Forget the arduous and time-consuming process of completing 1-one-1 running records every term for every one of my students. How angry and disappointed I am now to learn that similar systems only accurately identify struggling readers around 50% of the time. Week 30 β’ The plants are growing! It was book fair week! We had our student showcase family night! β’ This was such a looooooong week. The book fair energy is always fun and it was BOGO which is my personal fave lol. But the amount of β¨stuffβ¨ that comes into the room everyday from their little shopping sprees is exhausting. Some kids legit show up everyday with like $20-$30 to spend and I'm like BUT WHERE IS IT COMING FROM!? β’ We also had our student showcase night. This was essentially an open house for families to come and go through classrooms to see their child's work or projects. Everybody was able to decide what their class was going to show off. I had a bunch of art projects and their portfolios that I've been collecting all of our bigger writing projects in. We still have at least one big writing project to add and is love to do end of year photos to go with their beginning of the year photos too! β’ Our veggies are coming along nicely. I have 3 different watering crews that rotate each day. I know, I know, it would likely be fine to do weekly crews but I'm actually much more likely to remember if it's a daily thing. π€·ββοΈ Plus it's optional so if they don't want to that day it's fine to sit it out and wait for the next time their crew is up. Coming up nextβ¦ @crayola Model Magic all around ππ₯³. This is the first year I didnβt order clay and only ordered model magic π. This tired art teacher has no regrets lol. We are using markers and ink daubers to dye the model magic instead of painting so Iβm excited for a relatively messy-free sculpting experience this year ππ€ͺπ. Tip- butcher paper is my favorite surface for building and drying model magic if you struggle with sticking! β€οΈKindergarten is making cookies and reading βIf You Give a Mouse a Cookieβ π§‘First is making ice cream pops πSecond is making Ice Cream Sundaes (lesson from @katieplus4 π) πThird is making donuts, a yearly tradition as long as Iβve been teaching, and theyβve been asking about them all year lol ππ© thereβs always that one lesson haha. πFourth is making turtles π’π π5th is doing dragon eyes π πlesson from @2art.chambers and @nylah.khan recently shared some steps on her page. You can put the student workbook awayβ π READ THAT AGAIN π.... and then keep reading to see what I mean with these easy ideas ππβ β Try a problem sort:β Students donβt need to do every problem in the workbook. Sometimes, the lesson is more about thinking critically about the type of problem.β I make new sorts for my Math Genius Squad members, but if you are not a member, try just taking a workbook page and cutting up the problems.β Have students sort the problems.β β Pictured here are 3rd graders sorting regrouping problems.β β π They may ask each other:β Will we make a new ten?β A New hundred?β Or both?β β π If the partners disagree ( they have to reason together and defend answer) then they had to work out the problem ( proof picture only) to see who was correct.β β π At the the end of the sort, they each take a problem from each column, glue onto paper ( or just rewrite) and solve.β β π Kids are waaay more engaged and they did way more math talk, reasoning, defending, and meaningful practice.β β Ideas for sorting:β - Answers will be greater thanβ¦ less thanβ¦β - Problems need regrouping : tens, ones, hundredsβ - Problems will have remainders, no remaindersβ - Story problem sorts( my fave): sort by problem type( not operation- see back of student book for problem types)β - Kinder: plus zero,,plus 1, minus 0, minus 1 etc.β - Geometry: square, not square. Right angles, less than right. Quadrilaterals, hexagons. Etc.β β How else could you sort the content you are currently teaching??? WIll you try any of these? If so, which one? How else do you get your students to discuss math with each other?
