Today, May 6, is Tractor Day at #OSD. The tractors will be parked northeast of the tech wing in the back parking lot (off 10th St.). Please avoid parking near the portable today to save room for this event. For everyone’s safety, tractors will remain stationary for the day (i.e. no engines running and no tractor rides). Thank you to the students who signed up in advance; all slots are now full, and students must not bring tractors who have not already made previous arrangements with school administration regarding safety protocols. Please be safe on the roads today, everyone, and remember to always slow down and proceed with caution around farm machinery. May 5 is Dutch Heritage Day in Canada, an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the many contributions that Canadians of Dutch heritage have made to our country’s social, cultural, and economic fabric. May 5 is also the anniversary of Liberation Day in the Netherlands, marking the end of Nazi Germany’s occupation during WWII. Canada is home to more than a million people of Dutch heritage, with members of the community having established homesteads in the Canadian West during the 1890s. In the 1920s, Dutch Canadians became essential to the economy as they worked on farms, in factories, and in homes. After the Second World War, many more immigrated to Canada as war brides and children of Canadian soldiers. On Dutch Heritage Day, we also remember and honour the sacrifices made by past members of the Canadian Armed Forces in the liberation of the Netherlands during the Second World War. #OSD at the #ModelUnitedNations! OSDSS has sent a delegation of teenage diplomats to the Southern Ontario Model United Nations Assembly, which takes place in Toronto from April 29 to May 1, 2024. Each delegate is assigned a nation to represent as realistically as possible, mirroring the work undertaken each day by delegates to the United Nations and other organizations. Through discussion, diplomacy, and consensus, delegates will try to advance their nations’ interests while negotiating on world issues.
