There were three participants from the four houses. The participants were enthusiastic and were given a general topic on the spot to speak upon. We had a joyous afternoon of jam judging in Ilmington Community Cafe yesterday. Our amateur Jam Jury convened over pots of tea and lots of homemade scones to taste the strawberry jams in our first Jam Jamboree. A winner was declared: Angela Mason’s homemade strawberry jam is the cream of the crop this summer and we’ll be catching up with Angela soon to award her a bottle of Spirit of Ilmington fruit liqueur. “It was fun tasting all the jams,” said jury member Nikki Holt from Blockley. “It’s a tough job, but they weren’t going to taste themselves.” Armed with tasting notes and miniature spoons, the jury were unstinting in their search for a jam champion. There was the mandatory discussion about the pronunciation of “scone” and whether it was “jam before cream” or “cream before jam”, so we knew we’d got a room full of experts! We’d particularly like to thank Sarah Beebee for making 72 perfect little scones. Simply say: “Hello, my name is Maggie.” or “Hi, I’m John.” or “Good morning, my name is Samantha Smith.” 5-Confident Voice– This is a very important ingredient! A day before the much planned Jam competition for the local women in two villages in Wainibuka i.e Nasautoka and Nabouva, we appreciate the assistance of one of our judges, Adi Sereana Naulivou. Ms Naulivou has a diploma in Journalism Studies from the University of the South Pacific. She has over 20 years of experience in organising and managing community fundraising events. She is also an artisan, with a focus of making paper jewellery and floral arrangements. We aknowledge Na Marama Bale Roko Tui Dreketi, Ro Teimumu Kepa @roteimumukepamp for recommending Ms Naulivou for this competition. Gratitude also goes to Vasiti Tabucakau who is an active and liaison for Youth in the rural areas. Vasiti has been involved in making the necessary arrangements in the 2 respective villages. Last but not least, thank you to Mrs Sereima Tawake of @marama_alliance_uk for kindly donating to the 3rd prize of this competition.
