It was a fear of mine while writing for characters that a trait would ring as untruthful. Here’s a scene that I was worried about while writing, but thought it worked out brilliantly! ⠀ ⠀ Colleen @colleenmslattery plays Paisley, and I knew her to be a very bright person in real life. It seemingly contrasts from Paisley’s character whose pure line read can sound slow. Its a tough task to play a character like that and have it not come across as a caricature. Colleen was able to capture an essence of the character of wanting to be liked and because everything was rooted in that she sells the character and moments in this scene.⠀ ⠀ Similarly... this scene was the first time I gave an indication that Elisa has a not so sweet side. I really loved the idea that she could hate someone for the pure comedy of it, but I also had the concern that it would deviate a bit too much from her character to this point. Some of the most enjoyable parts of the series are the moments where we improv'd. The early versions of season 1 did not have an Amy character, but once I added Lydia @lyd_folck as the director, I really wanted to get her involved on screen as well! ⠀ ⠀ We already had seven trainers at that point, so adding another one just seemed so blah to me. I considered a number of different options, but ultimately I wanted her to do clean up since the thought of her having to deal with our filth was particularly appealing. ⠀ ⠀ Here are some other Amy occupations I considered:⠀ ⠀ Massage Therapist - Love the idea of her having to rub down gross people, but some of the technical details like a massage room / table would need to be worked out. ⠀ ⠀ Front Desk / Check In - It would have been harder to rationalize including her in group scenes if there was no one at the front. ⠀ ⠀ Smoothie Maker - Again, it would have been harder involving her in group activity and I wanted to easily include her in other scenes / beats. ⠀ ⠀ After seeing the finished product I’m glad I chose the route I did, but do wonder about other choices. Hey, maybe a massage therapist would be fun to add in the future?! ⠀ ⠀ Intro to Amy in ep 2, but the character shines most when she’s at home base (the bathroom)... that’s ep 4! Sometimes you score a late round gem! I wanted to get an AD to join our crew. Most of JBG cast and crew are friends or have some kind of connection to someone I’ve worked with in the past. I went with posting online because I couldn’t find anyone within my circle that was available to AD that weekend.⠀ ⠀ I was prepared to be go with someone who was reliable to get the job done. I didn’t want to be super picky since as usual, things are last minute and closing quick was important. I saw Leah's submission @leeleelove_ , and I thought I'd reach out. After a great chat she agrees to come aboard, but wasn’t prepared for how much she would offer!...⠀ ⠀ Leah was all in through the shoot dates, and even the pre production process! This girl went absolutely above and beyond, and put her heart and soul into everything to make sure things were going to plan. She volunteered herself repeatedly to do more, and felt like I had been working with her for years! I knew she had an acting background so I asked her if she wanted to be in front of the camera as well, and she gave an enthusiastic yes! You can catch her make an appearance in episode 4, in one of my favorite sequences!⠀ ⠀ Above all things, I want to work more and more with people who turn work into a pleasure. Manu @manubmenon towers at a height of 6’6” and thought that that his tall stature would add to the humor of the web series!⠀ ⠀ I’m really glad Manu is as tall as he is because it definitely added a fun element to scenes. The juxtaposition alone of him next to so many people is hilarious to me. That pick up scene with “Amy” played by Lydia comes to mind as a favorite (3rd pic in gallery). ⠀ ⠀ His height was also something that needed to be planned for at times. @reidmpetrodp , our DP, for example bought special platform shoes so that he could get a better shot (pic #2). In most cases a script gets written and you find actors that match the text. I did things a bit backwards. I had a rough idea of the composition and type of characters I wanted in JBG. I reached out to close actor friends that I would love to work with and wrote specifically with them in mind. ⠀ ⠀ I chose Mateo @orbit.ribot because he can bring the house down like no other. He trained with me a few years back and thought he was such a talented performer, with a penchant for comedy. I wish I had the opportunity to do a scene with him way back then, so I made my own selfish dream come true by asking to be in the web series. ⠀ ⠀ I had a blast working with him and I could barely hold it together in scenes we shot. He also keeps a fun attitude on set. Im so glad we had fun embracing the mistakes on set! Check out a take that didn’t make the final cut...⠀ ⠀ The amazing thing about watching Elisa and Colleen work is they literally never screwed up. Ever. I couldn't believe that every take was a good one. It made editing difficult to chose the best clip (sorry @chasekuertz ! )⠀ ⠀ Actors can be afforded *some* leeway of multiple takes within reason, since there isn’t expensive film we are wasting. Sometimes it takes a take or two to nail the lines and pacing before a good cut. Elisa and Colleen, however, just tend to get it right every take. ⠀ ⠀ That's what makes this clip special. Elisa slips up here (literally) and we all thought it was hilarious :P ⠀ ⠀ Also, did you notice that the ominous music doesn't play in the blooper clip? Tip if you are trying to produce content: Get yourself a KILLER DP! If it's not shot right, then you have no product. Here's the backstory...⠀ ⠀ When we were in pre-production of the pilot, I originally pegged someone else as my DP based on an impressive portfolio of work. The guy talked the talk, and when I asked him if he could bring the vision I was seeing for this mockumentary, he said yes convincingly. I did a cursory check up for the type of his equipment he used, and thought it sounded good. Later on, it was the fabulous director I onboarded, Lydia, @lyd_folck who was more detailed to ask if he had zoom lenses: he did not. Obviously, I can't achieve the look I want with primes for a mockumentary, so I wanted to reach out to the DP to see if we could figure something out. When I merely asked the original DP about it, he became really defensive and confrontational to the point he was downright unprofessional. Because he was unwilling to work through a discussion to figure a work around, I made the tough decision to go in a different direction with the DP. The only problem was the shoot was about 3 days away!⠀ ⠀ So here we are a few days before the shoot, with NO DP!!!!! Enter the GREATEST last minute emergency ever: Reid Petro (DP) @reidpetrodp. I was able to find Reid just a couple days before shoot date on mandy! He had a great portfolio of documentaries, so he had the skills to pull off a mockumentary shoot. I was thrilled he agreed to com aboard, and within a couple days he soaks up the script, and works through the entire process partnering closely with me and Lydia. ⠀ ⠀ And the day of the shoot he is a A TOTAL PRO. He comes to set early, and is over-prepared for emergencies (like the time a sound guy bailed, and he happened to bring sound equipment). I wouldn't be surprised if he hauls a generator with him in case power goes out :) Reid absolutely captured the look we were going for, and did so with a positive attitude. I'm so glad he was able to come back last year and finish shooting the season with us!⠀ ⠀ Sometimes the world is falling, and it's the best gift ever. Thanks Reid!⠀ ⠀ #johnbrothersgym
Look, Elisa doesn’t hate “Paisley” (played by Colleen) @colleenmslattery at all! Here’s another relationship between characters that couldn’t be farther from the truth!⠀ ⠀ After a few revisions of the season 1 script, I felt Elisa’s character was still missing something. I thought it would be a fun element if she could hate someone else in the group of trainers. Paisley seemed to be a fun choice!⠀ ⠀ The script was revised at that point to put them in close situations... one on one chats, Elisa shows her yoga poses, etc. It became more clear from a character POV what elements of personality would conflict with each other. More beats to play up a millennial point of view for Paisley were written, and this would be in clear conflict of Elisa’s soulful nature. ⠀ ⠀ Elisa and Colleen knocked it out of the park. They worked between takes to nail their dynamic. It was amazing to see them breathe the words to life and make it completely their own. ⠀ ⠀ Catch this dynamic more in episodes 4 and 5. When life gives you lemons, you make a .... web series???⠀ ⠀ When we picked the web series back up last year and began filming this was the first shot we had to setup for. There were so many things that went wrong to begin with. It’s a microcosm of trying to produce anything. ⠀ ⠀ For starters, the office we used in the pilot was no more, so this was a change in space for us. The main problem was it being cramped and hard to shoot. I sat on a foam roller because a chair couldn’t fit and Reid our DP was basically stapled to the wall to get the shot. By the time we were setup we were already running two hours late on an overnight shoot! ⠀ ⠀ Despite it all, I loved the look of the new room and it added character! Have you noticed the giant hole behind head in many of the office shots? Thought it was kind of funny left unexplained. ⠀ ⠀ Most importantly, everyone kept a positive spirit and remained upbeat despite being tired all night! Want to know a BTS dirty secret? When I first started marketing this series I had so many different ideas on how to get JBG out there. One of the early ideas was to have Colleen’s character be the voice of our social media account. Colleen @colleenmslattery was amazing to work with taking these photos in Central Park! ⠀ .⠀ The photos were supposed to serve two purposes. First, use as selfies off her character IG page. Secondly, some of these photos make an appearance in ep4 when Paisley mentions her social media account to Elisa. Remember that moment?⠀ ⠀ Ultimately, I went in a different direction with social media. I made this behind the scenes account because I wanted an authentic dialogue about what went into the series so content is being shared from that perspective. This is such a special photo to me because it captures the moment after we called season 1 a wrap! I can't tell you how great this moment felt after several overnight shoots, and here we are smiling, likely around 4 AM! Here with me is @manubmenon aka my fictional brother, @reidmpetrodp DP, @lyd_folck the director / Amy, and @leeleelove_ our AD ... I could go on all day about each one of these guys... Something you didn’t know is that the dynamic of our characters in the web series couldn’t be farther from the truth! Elisa and I actually knew each other for several years and trained in Esper Studio together. She is one of the sweetest and most generous people, and the thought that I could be so sour of her was so foreign, which is why I added that dynamic for comedy. What you didn't know about this argument scene between me and Manu @manubmenon... We only had one or two lines that I wrote as a part of this script. During the day of the shoot, I wanted to really sell the idea of this tense argument between the two of us, so Manu and I did a lot of improv. We basically insulted each other a whole lot, and what ended up in the cut was something we thought worked. This Cobra Kai scene was one of my favorites from the JBG series! If you haven't watched the ep, basically Thiago and me host a Cobra Kai themed Zumba class, and things get out of control...⠀ .⠀ For the costume, I had to look up the old karate kid to see how @william_zabka character, Johnny, looked in the infamous halloween party scene. I spent at least 45 minutes to get the make up on right, and then after I zipped up my costume I had to stop breathing or else the zipper would bust open! Behind the scenes on this scene from ep 2 - icebreakers... It had been about a whole year since we shot episode 1 so a lot changed in this gym, including this office. If you compare it to the office in the pilot, you will realize it's actually a completely different room!⠀ .⠀ The new office was really cramped for space, and because of that getting a two shot from this angle was tricky, but @reidmpetrodp nailed it as usual! I'm actually sitting on a narrow cylinder foam roller because a chair wouldn't fit on my side of the desk! Here's something you didn't know about Hannah, played by Marissa @lecarpsicle ! When I originally wrote John Brothers Gym, I had less characters, but it felt incomplete. After a few revisions I added a couple characters, one of them being Hannah, because I thought the characters were interesting in themselves, but also brought out more interesting dimensions on other characters and gave the trainers an identity as a whole.⠀ .⠀ After I cast my friend Marissa I thought she really nailed the job, playing an aspiring actress, who works part time as a trainer. Also, fun fact, Marissa and I used to do weekly meet ups to read random tv scripts and plays! John Bros Gym web series - Cobra Kai behind the scenes!!! I wanted to incorporate one of my favorite shows from last year into our web series, and thought it would be awesome to get me and Mateo (played by Thiago) to lead a Zumba class. ⠀ .⠀ The twist is, the two characters have no idea about Zumba and instead teach some badass karate. Well, all hell breaks lose in this episode. This is exactly the type of writing I love most. Starting with the ideas that are the most fun, and worry about all the details through the revision process. We took pictures during lunch in midtown Manhattan, and spent the time embracing each other near famous sites such as the love sculpture, well known buildings, and the 53/6 chicken and rice cart. What you didn't know about @manubmenon getting smacked in the face... The scene starts with a salty Jerry (me) sneaking up on Manu and popping him with this balance ball square to the face. We had to do this shot several times because we wanted to make sure the ball hit the perfect spot on his GQ face. ⠀ Sometimes, I accidentally threw it too low because I didn't want to hurt him, but honestly it was no good for the shot. ⠀ .⠀ I eventually just started throwing it pretty much at his face, and it looked much more believable, probably because he actually got hit. Having FUN is what it's all about! There are moments on set that can be a bore (ie, waiting), but I live for taking shots like this. I remember working through this acro yoga pose with Manu multiple times during the shot, and the both of us kept laughing like crazy.
