High & Low - John Galliano (Kevin MacDonald, 2023) Quite an intimate insight into one of modern fashion’s most equally celebrated and controversial figures. Kevin MacDonald’s chronicle of the rise and fall of John Galliano charts an explosive life that spans 80s New Romanticism to the Kate Moss heroin chic era of the early 00’s. I must confess to feeling the film meanders somewhat when focusing on its subject’s spectacular fall from grace by way of Galliano’s antisemitic remarks, but I also have to credit it for really digging into the actual art behind the artist with an insightful perspective. It certainly does justice to Galliano’s reputation, whether or it not comes to grips with his controversies is another matter entirely. But I’d say MacDonald has knocked it out of the park in painting a portrait of one of the most important artists of the 21st century and the fashion landscape he redefined.
