"We are sushi-ed out" .. over-heard at Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. 😱 No, there is no "too much of a good thing". I was so tempted to tell these 2 ang-mo there's more to sushi than salmon. So fortunate to be able to enjoy freshly sliced otoro and chutoro maguro at the markets. But the melt in mouth vein-free kamotoro topped it all, so creamy so buttery so soft so luscious. I admit ... so atas to think akami isn't good enough, at least for this trip. Market standard only, but that was still pretty good. Can't imagine what the top grades at the top restaurants would taste like. Some of the highlights from my recent visit to Yoshii’ s omakase. . Bafun uni from Hokkaido, with caviar on top Sweet and creamy, with pops of saltiness on top. . Chuutoro tzuke. I don’t remember having marinated chuutoro before but quite flavourful and delicious. . Yuzu chawanmushi with spanner crab and gingko nut. Great flavour, delicately sweet with a hint of yuzu. . Kingfish (engawa) Flavoured and aged well, but the texture was top notch! . Shime Saba. The mackerel was good, but it’ll get better here on in. . Lobster tempura with lobster head sauce. Crispy and sweet with umami depth. . Tamago-yaki, with snapper and prawn . Kamatoro Fatty but not overly fatty. Amazing mouth feel! . Generally, prices aren’t as cheap compared to previously too despite a strong SG$ against the yen 💴 Had our usual fav tuna fr fav shop @maguroyakurogin. Tried kamatoro & had it made into sushi 🍣 & sashimi style. It was sooooo melt in the mouth good 👍🏼 Worth the price we shelled out for! Next is ano fav which is just directly opposite fr ☝🏼 It’s uofuku 鱼福 They have freshest scallop & sea urchin. Scallop was grilled with butter & soy sauce - sweet & da best 😋 Sea urchin was creamy & delish 🤤 And our cravings were satiated after a 4yrs wait. O. After seeing @ramen_zac and @hibaru.maywood visit @maguroyakurogintsukiji on their recent Japan trip, I knew I had to hit it up. Maguroya Kurogin is a tuna specialty shop at the popular Tsukiji market. I got there at 9am, an hour after opening and it was already packed. Maguroya had a large line, it was so long they cut it off so they wouldn't be blocking the walkways. Once it moved they allowed more people to join. Fortunately it moved relatively fast, there were also three or four other vendors that had even longer ones. I jumped in at the cutoff and made it to the front within 20 minutes. They are efficient at moving the line along, taking your order and then directing you to the standing booth or counter where you'll be eating. As for the tuna they offer a variety of cuts. Like any decent sushi spot you can get akami, chutoro and otoro. What I learned that day was there's an even fattier cut than otoro and that's kamatoro which comes from the neck/collar area. I ordered the tuna don and nigiri combo that came with the chutoro, otoro and kamatoro. My god it was glorious. The tuna was some of the best I've ever had and you can easily differentiate between the cuts as you go up in fattiness level. Tsukiji can be a tourist trap and pricey compared to what you can get across Tokyo but I'm a tourist and had a blast going there. Despite the higher prices it's still an absolute bargain compared to what I'd have to pay back home. For my next trip I do want to come back, spend more time here and see what those other super popular vendors are about. I do like that all the food I want to try is in one spot rather than having to scour across the city to find everything.
