How can you spend more time in your ZONE OF GENIUS?🤔 When you're doing the things that you're uniquely great at and that bring you the most joy... THAT'S your zone of genius. The goal as a business owner is to spend MORE time doing those things. And less time doing everything else. Hard truth: You have to release the expectation that your family & friends will be supportive of your business.😩 All that energy you're using to beg your family & friends to like, share & follow (and the disappointment you feel when they don't) could be spent attracting the right people to your page. Entrepreneurship doesn't have to suck the life out of you. Building a sustainable career, and having your priorities in check are what I'm all about! There are a lot of big names in the coaching game that will make you feel like sh*t for allowing yourself to sleep in, or not working out 2 hours a day, or not doing cold plunges, or not getting lip filler, or not going to every single conference available, or not totally crushing your goals to the max 🙄 I promise, you can be amazingly successful beyond your wildest dreams without falling victim to the hustle culture game. You CAN get 8 hours of sleep, and spend time with your loved ones, and watch Netflix, and cook meals, and not answer your email on the weekend, and take a vacation, and avoid social media, and enjoy an afternoon nap and STILL BE SUCCESSFUL. I saw this quote from a friend who runs a coaching business and asked if I could borrow it. I thought it was brilliant. @kathykingstrategies I love my closest friends dearly. I'm a sucker for a great quote! 😂💜 Today I wanted to hop on and give some insight into who I am and how I got here. Like most dance teachers, I’ve been dancing since as far back as I can remember, and it has been a constant in my life. But, somewhere along the way, my heart shifted from wanting to perform to wanting to teach. Now, after almost two decades of teaching, I have found myself craving the next phase in the journey. Teaching is such a beautiful, fulfilling and important career path. Teachers change lives. So, how can we become the best, most intentional teachers possible to better serve our students?🤔 This question has pushed me into launching @kathykingstrategies and developing methods, tools and courses to inspire dance teachers to see the bigger picture. Looking beyond the exercises and the technique to build an authentic life centered on nurturing the hearts of our students (and ourselves). I’m not here to tell you how to teach a pirouette more efficiently (come take my jazz class for that). I’m here to wake you up! Your students aren’t going to remember every technique exercise you teach them… they are going to remember how you made them feel. How you inspired them.🙌 Over the past few years, I have been more mindful about what it means to live authentically. I am certainly still a work-in-progress, but the daily choices to find gratitude in every moment, to see the good in people, to offer joy to others… These are the actions that have made me the teacher I am today. L E V E L U P your business, even during a pandemic! 💪 Dance studios have been hit hard during this pandemic. Small businesses that have been around for generations have closed their doors for good. It is devastating. Throughout this time, I have noticed some things that have made a huge difference in helping dance businesses stay not only afloat, but thriving! What are some secrets to this success?? 1. COMMUNICATE MORE! You don't need all of the answers, but honest and regular communication with your staff and customers is a must if you want your business to thrive. 2. GET CREATIVE! Be flexible and get out of the mindset of "we've always done things this way." How can you deliver great service in a new way? The answer is there, you just have to be open to creative thinking. Pro tip: Schedule "creative time" in your day to dream about wild new ways to run your business. 3. EDUCATE YOURSELF! Stop using the excuse "I don't know how to use Zoom" or "I'm not sure how to attract new clients"... Google it! You can find the answer to just about anything in a few minutes of searching. Another benefit of learning about new things... It can spark so many awesome ideas that can lead your business down a successful path that you would have never imagined. S T R E T C H past your comfort zone and watch yourself grow! 🙌 I have to admit - the COVID19 shut down and ultimate shift to virtual teaching threw me for a loop! I was the teacher saying "let's just be patient, we'll be opened back up in no time." Fast forward four months and we're just beginning to offer some very small in person, in masks, open air, distanced dance classes two nights a week. When I finally accepted about three weeks in to the shut down that virtual teaching was going to become required, I still felt hesitant. (Translation: uncomfortable) What if I look stupid on screen? What if the audio doesn't sound perfect? What if the kids aren't engaged in learning virtually? My mind went spinning! But, after teaching my first Zoom class, I was HOOKED!💃 Was it different? Yep. Was it difficult at times? Hell yeah. Did stuff go wrong? Double hell yeah! But, guess what? Classes were still productive. Dancing still felt great. We laughed off the tech hiccups and just kept dancing. It was all okay. I laughed at myself because I constantly preach "embrace the uncomfortable", and I found myself in a perfect position to practice what I preach and I was still fighting it in the beginning! 🤦 Being uncomfortable is HARD. But we make it through with new skills and new perspectives! M E S S U P 🙌 I was invited to teach a Zoom class recently for my friends at @thedanceplaceltd 💃 We have built an awesome relationship over the years, and the kids were super surprised to see my face on their screen for their last class of the season. What a weird way to end a dance year, but I know these Zoom classes have been a lifesaver🙌 for a lot of studios nationwide to not only keep the business going, but more importantly, to stay connected to our students who give us so much life! Something I always teach about, but it has really been a focus during these dance-at-home times, is to embrace your mistakes. MESS UP! You will never find out how amazing you are if you don't allow yourself the grace to make allllll the mistakes. I have taken notice that when I encourage my classes to mess up, a blanket of relief covers the room for a moment. When we know we're "allowed" to make mistakes, the pressure of perfection is off. Imagine if we applied that to our day-to-day life... 🤔 I've made thousands of mistakes, and sometimes they deliver a blow to the ego, sometimes I feel embarrassed or dumb... but those moments never stick around. What does stick around is the growth.
