Patrick's Liquor Bar, Louisville, Kentucky. Taken on September 19, 2019. Happy St. Patrick's Day! It seems fitting that an establishment called Patrick's Liquor Bar would be celebrating its anniversary on this day. The bar opened to the public on Tuesday, March 17, 1953, which marks 71 years of serving up St. Patrick's Day cheer to Louisville patrons. This amazing old neon sign in front is most likely original to the bar's 1953 opening. Interestingly, although the words "Beer Garden" appear on the sign, the business doesn't appear to have ever been known under that name. Clarksdale TV Sales and Service, Louisville, Kentucky. Taken on September 18, 2019. Clarksdale TV Sales and Service has been in business for over 85 years. It was established in 1938 by the late Carl E. Koch and his brother, and originally sold and serviced radios as television was not yet widely available to the public. TV sales and repair went on to become the primary focus of the business. Clarksdale is still family-owned, currently owned/operated by Mr. Koch's son Donnie, who began working at his father's store 60 years ago. It is the rare occasion that I get the opportunity to speak with the owner of a business when I'm photographing a sign, but happily, this was one of the times I did. Mr. Koch saw me taking photos and came outside to chat. He was enthusiastic about the history of the business and mentioned that it was the oldest TV sales/repair service still operating in the world. He also mentioned that quite a few people stop by to get photos of the sign. It was a pleasure speaking with him. It's understandable why so many people feel led to capture photos of this glorious sign, as it is a thing of beauty, and at approximately 70 years of age, is looking very good indeed. There is a maker's mark indicating that the sign was built locally, by Neon-Art of Louisville. Wigwam Motel No. 2, Cave City, Kentucky. Taken on June 26, 2021. Wigwam Village No. 2 dates back to 1937, when it was built as the second of seven similar wigwam-themed motels across the US. Today, it's one of only three that remain, and the only one in the eastern half of the country; the other two are located in California and Arizona. Wigwam Village No. 2 still boasts a very nice vintage neon main motel sign, which I will post in the future, but it also has a Coca-Cola privilege sign. Interestingly, the two sides are different. The other side, which I posted back in February, features the classic white-on-red Coc-Cola "wave" logo on the top panel, which appears to be a bit newer-looking than this side. H & S Motel, Bonnieville, Kentucky. Taken on September 17, 2019. For #motelmonday, an old relic from the Bluegrass State. The H & S Motel was built in 1951 by Paul and Esther Srygler, who ran it until Paul's passing in late 1967. Mrs. Srygler and their daughter Ramona operated it as a motel until 1978, when it was converted to efficiency apartments. Ramona passed away in 1992, and Mrs. Srygler passed in 2006. The former motel has seen better days and happier times, but it still boasts its original neon sign, now quite weathered and rusty. Some of the neon tubing is still fiercely clinging on, in defiance of the passing decades. Gerstle's Place, Louisville, Kentucky. Taken on June 26, 2021. Gerstle's Place is a Louisville Landmark, beloved by generations of the city. It will celebrate a century in business next year, having been established in 1924. The original owner was John Gerstle, who operated the bar for over 20 years until retiring in 1946. He passed away in 1975. Gerstle's is a thriving night spot, with frequent performances by live bands, good food, and high spirits. In 2021, the tavern opened a second location in Clearwater, Florida. It's fitting that such a long-time business such as Gerstle's would have a historic sign out front, and this one is a beauty. I don't know when it was installed, perhaps in the 1940s. Catalina Motel, Lexington, Kentucky. Taken on September 20, 2019. The Catalina Motel has been a part of the Lexington community for over six decades. The earliest mention I could find of the motel dates from 1960, and a 1961 reference describes it as "one of the area's most modern, up-to-date stopovers," so 1960 seems like a likely vintage. The managers were Austin Kuryloski and E. P. Grisby. In 1964, significant improvements were made to the Catalina, including a new restaurant and swimming pool. The Catalina is still open, and still sports great vintage signage, although it is less spectacular than it appeared in the 1960s. The sign used to have a section with "Catalina" atop the motel letters, and a small starburst atop it all, but those were removed at some point. In addition to this main sign, there were small neon entrance signs along the driveway, and giant letters spelling out CATALINA MOTEL on the building's roof, with a spectacular roto-sphere in the center. The roto-sphere has been re-homed, and only the MOTEL portion of the roof letters still remain. Willow Lake Tavern, Louisville, Kentucky. Taken on June 27, 2021. Willow Lake Tavern has a long history in Louisville, dating back to the 1930s. Back in the day, the Tavern was a popular gathering place for local musicians, and according to a WWII veteran's recollections, enlisted men would go to Willow Lake to enjoy live music before being sent off to war. Over the years, the tavern building has been home to several businesses and has endured periods of closure. It has been home to Selena's at Willow Lake Tavern, a popular eatery serving Sicilian and Creole cuisine, since 2008. Happily, the colorful neon sign, which has long greeted patrons of the tavern, remains on the property. It may be original or installed shortly afterward, but probably dates from no later than the 1940s. I love the small white diamond at the bottom. Travel Inn Motel, Cave City, Kentucky. Taken on September 17, 2019. The Travel Inn Motel was originally known as the Twin City Motel and Restaurant. It was built in 1958 and was owned and operated by local residents Mr. and Mrs. George Fischer. It was one of many motels to be built in the area in the mid-20th century as tourism boomed. The motel's sign is original to the 1958 opening, although many changes have been made to it over the years. The five blocks on top were part of the letters spelling out MOTEL, and there were two ovals atop the sign with "Twin" and "City" in neon script. But despite all the changes, the inverted triangle shape is unmistakable. It's #motelmonday. Xavier Nally's Barber Shop, Louisville, Kentucky. Taken on June 26, 2021. Xavier Nally's Barber Shop opened in 1963. Generations of Louisville residents have gotten hair cuts there over the past six decades. The amazing rooftop neon sign for the shop is one of the most unusual I've come across. It depicts a traditional barber pole, although the design almost suggests a peppermint stick as well. The "Air Conditioned" is a special touch; it must have been a selling point for patrons in the humid Louisville summers. This is one sign in which lighting/time of day will make or break the photo. The first time I photographed it, back in 2019, the sun's position at that time caused the sign to be harshly back-lit and washed out the colors. This photo was taken just before 5:00 PM, and the lighting was perfect. Covington Chili, Covington, Kentucky. Taken on September 13, 2022. The greater Cincinnati area is well known for its distinctive chili, with chains such as Skyline and Gold Star as well as independent restaurants competing for favor among chili seekers. One of the oldest chili establishments was Covington Chili, located in Kentucky, just across the state line from Cincinnati proper. Covington Chili was founded in 1936 by Christy and Mae Terzieff. It was sold in the 1950s to Tim and Michael Stephans, and again in 1996 to George Stamakatos. It changed hands twice more in the 2010s, but was reported as closed in March 2018. The sign, which is likely original to the 1930s restaurant opening or shortly afterward, still hangs outside. It looks as though it was repainted in the fairly recent past, although the neon has been removed. There's some mystery about the specific details of the history of this former long-time member of the Louisville business community. But a quick search did narrow it down a bit. The earliest mention I could find of the business in operation dates from 1926, and the most recent from 1987. At one time the company operated multiple locations in the Louisville area, but was operating just one at the time of its closing. At one time, it was partly owned by Edward Augustine. Although the business had seemingly long since closed, this old sign treasure was still standing in the lot. Dottie's Beauty Shop, Shelbyville, Kentucky. Taken on September 20, 2019. This glorious neon sign hangs outside a wonderful Italianate-style building in downtown Shelbyville. The former Dottie's Beauty Shop was owned and operated by Dottie Gordon and opened in 1940. The sign likely dates from that time. I did not see it lit, but the neon was aglow in some fairly recent photos I found online. Eastland Shopping Center, Louisville, Kentucky. Taken on June 27, 2021. The Eastland Shopping Center opened on August 18, 1959. Its tenants included Kroger and Winn-Dixie supermarkets, Woolworth, a bank, a dry cleaner, and more. The Kroger market had been opened earlier, in late 1957, and the remainder of the shopping center was built around it. This original sign still stands, and has so many wonderful mid-century design elements, including the clock (which was accurate, as the photo is time-stamped 9:39 AM). When I first photographed this sign in 2019, there was a plastic panel below the word "Center" that read "Home Xpressions," but it was removed at some point. There is a small maker's mark indicating that the sign was built by the Federal Sign Company. Royal Crown Co., Bowling Green, Kentucky. Taken on September 17, 2019. Here's something cool - a soda bottling company with its own privilege sign! At first thought it shouldn't be that unusual, and the signs were likely more common at these businesses in decades past, but this is one of only three privilege signs I've photographed at soda bottling companies. The Royal Crown line of products was introduced in Georgia in 1905. The cola product was initially marketed as Chero-Cola (and you can still find old ghost signs for the brand in the south), but was reformulated and renamed Royal Crown Cola in 1934 (later shortened to RC). Royal Crown was the first soft drink company to sell its products in cans in addition to glass bottles. RC privilege signs are rare these days; it's always a treat to come across one. The Royal Crown company used the logo on the sign from 1969 to 1989. Twig and Leaf, Louisville, Kentucky. Taken on September 18, 2019. The Twig and Leaf has been part of Louisville's restaurant community for ovet six decades. Local businessman Herman A. Parris transformed a former Dairy Freeze location into a drive-in burger establishment in 1959. Parris sold the business shortly afterward, and it became the Twig and Leaf under new ownership in 1962. It was designated as a local historic landmark in 2011. This grand neon sign is a highlight of the historic property. I was fortunate to catch it aglow in tne afternoon. Wigwam Village No. 2, Cave City, Kentucky. Taken on September 17, 2019. The Wigwam Village No. 2 was built in 1937, the second of seven original motel locations across the US. Today, only three of them remain. They are one of the most unusual motel architectural types, featuring individual wigwams as guest rooms, an example of unique mid-century roadside Americana. While Wigwam Village No. 2 does still have its amazing original neon sign (which I will post at a later date), it also has this Coca-Cola plastic privilege sign, which likely dates from the 1960s. It would be interesting to know how this Coca-Cola sign came to be added, as the Village didn't really need additional signage. The top panel may have been replaced at some point, as the reverse side of the sign has an even older looking Coca-Cola logo design. One of the things that intrigues me about privilege signs are the various fonts and details used for the bottom panel. Dix-Etown Lanes has been a part of the Elizabethtown community for approximately 60 years, and has been owned by generations of the Taylor family for much of that span. It was recently renamed B&B Lanes to honor family members who lost their lives in accidents in 2014. Mid-century bowling signs were nearly always very creative in design, and this sign is one of the most unique I've come across. The former Speier Hardware store, Louisville, Kentucky. Taken on September 18, 2019. Speier Hardware was founded in 1944 by Fred Speier and his wife, Dorothy. Mr. Speier immigrated to the US from Germany and began the business with $1000 in savings. The store was operated by members of the Speier family until 2014, when Mr. Speier's son-in-law retired and sold the business. While a thrift/vintage shop subsequently moved into the Speier building, the vintage sign remained. Holiday Motel, Cave City, Kentucky. Taken on June 26, 2021. Since we are still in the holiday season, I thought this sign would be a fitting choice. This is a re-shoot of a sign I first photographed in 2019. Cave City is one of those places that seem almost frozen in time, with many of the tourist-oriented properties looking very much as they must have looked years ago.
