Life update: Kolo has had a tumor for well over a year now. We were told that as long as it doesn’t grow in size he should be fine. We finally got a biopsy and it came back as cancerous. Kolo underwent surgery did awesome! he’s resting and healing up nicely. He will be back better than ever just in time for the warm weather!! #KingKolo

Reminder that everyone makes mistakes. Kolo was charged by an offleash dog on our walk today. The dog charged across the road. Thankfully dog dad was there so he stepped in front while we kept back. The dog had escaped, and the family knew the dog shouldn’t be offleash. Thankfully dog dad has a tonne of experience wrangling and catching a high energy dog with no interest in food (I wonder which dog taught him that?). It took almost 15 minutes to catch this dog. We’ve been there. We’ve been told a harness is “escape proof” yet been proven wrong. We’ve had a malfunctioning door that allowed Kolo out. We’ve had Kolo slip out of a very tight collar before realising his neck is as big as his skull. We’ve made mistakes and learned. Thankfully this mistake, like ours, didn’t end badly. My dog is not a robot. He’s not perfect. Some days he only wants attention, and other days doesn’t even want to be looked at. Some days he wants to train, other days he only wants to play, and other days he doesn’t want to do anything. He has good days. He has bad days. He doesn’t deserve to be treated like my training requires him to be perfect 24/7. I’m not perfect 24/7 and I can’t expect him to be either. I hope one day people start treating dogs like dogs and stop expecting perfection. He doesn’t need to tolerate unknown children running at his face, he doesn’t need to tolerate dogs jumping on his head during a walk, and he doesn’t need to tolerate other people approaching and touching him without asking. He’s a dog and shouldn’t be expected to tolerate what we don’t even expect another human to tolerate. This dog read my last post and said “you will not convince people I’m a lazy angel, take this!” He proceeded to spend 20 minutes today feral-ly trying to destroy his bed (shout out this Costco Kirkland bed for surviving), and then when I tried to redirect his frustration/energy/anger/god-knows-what into a toy, he played for a further ten minutes before focusing back onto the bed. I then tried to remove this dog off the couch and for the first time in maybe 3 years he growled at me. I know he does NOT growl at me unless I’m doing something wrong. He doesn’t do this around food, or anything. This wasn’t behavioural, I’ve read the situation wrong. I just walked out of the room. He almost always wants attention. Guess what? Dingus followed me. I put some space in between us for a few minutes before I rejoined him. Demon hour (s) is (are) now over and he’s sleeping soundly next to me like his feral outburst never happened. I love this dog so much. I love that he knows how to communicate with me. You don’t always get what you are looking for, but sometimes you get what you need. I’m still blown away that we adopted what we thought would be a high energy dog for running and sports, yet once he learned how to relax, he’s never looked back. Despite wanting a running buddy, we got a part-time couch potato with some spurts of Tasmanian Devil energy. We wanted one thing and got another, but I wouldn’t change him for anything. @rspca_vic wouldn’t recognise the dog he’s become but I hope they’d be happy to see that he’s dug a massive hole in our hearts and curled up there permanently - sleeping away the old man years of his life with us. Mid-summer run 🏃🏼♀️🐕 One thing I love about this dog is his ability to tell me what he wants, and regulates his activity levels well. Does he want to run in the heat? We run, but he will stop about 500m away to lay down in the shade. I just let him dictate what he wants to do. I’m so glad he’s not a dog that will run himself into heat stroke (at least if it’s just us). Finally a story of the best way someone approached us and Kolo. Sitting at a table, Kolo completely underneath the table. The parents are walking by and the kids are not engaging Kolo but happened to point him out to their mum. Mum asks us if he likes pats. Kolo loves attention. Even if it’s just so he can get food he’s happy to get a few pats. He’s very neutral with calm and respectful people (kids included). I said “Can I get him out from tinder the table first? I don’t want him feeling trapped.” They were completely understanding, stepped back and let us bring him out. Kolo gave the kid a lick on the face and sat down. The kids gave him a few gentle pats and then thanked us and left. This is how you teach your kid interactions with dogs. Don’t engage without permission. Once permission is granted, be respectful, gentle, and calm. Kids are already a bit chaotic, we know this. Their energy is very different and although as adults, it’s mostly endearing, as a dog, it doesn’t come across the same. So grateful when people respect our personal space and his. This boy is incredible 🤎 1️⃣ stayed out of sight and out of mind at the cafe today, completely under the table 2️⃣ recalled off a cat that was ready to pick a fight (he was on leash but kept a loose leash and he chose to leave it) - however any movement from this cat it would have been a different story 3️⃣ dealt beautifully with a puppy that tried to come under the table - I blocked it and he didn’t react or even get up. Why ✨WE✨ crate train: Disclaimer: this is what works for us. This is not a suggestion or judgement on if you do or don’t. This is based on OUR situation. 🐶 Preparation for emergencies. Kolo is crazy, we expect that he will have at least a vet visit once where he needs to be crated. He already has. He’s already anxious so I don’t want him to also find the crate extremely aversive. 🐶 Australia is prone to both fire and floods. We are making sure he’s comfortable in a crate in case he ever needs to be evacuated. 🐶 He finds it secure and safe. It was the only thing that felt safe enough for him to sleep. He’s turning grey and I just keep hugging him and mourning his inevitable loss. I’ll never have a dog like him again. There’s something about being the first good human connection a dog has, the first who forms a working relationship. Your dog doesn’t need endless hours of exercise. I agree with this - to an extent. This is black and white language, your dog (indicating everyone reading this) does NOT need (indicating no exceptions) endless exercise. For a new dog owner or someone with a new dog, yes, exercise IN PLACE of training is not a great idea. You don’t want to create an elite athlete that will definitely be able to out-sustain you quickly. But here’s the grey area - dogs that come to their owners as elite athletes. Not a puppy, not all rescues but definitely some full grown dogs. Kolo came to us with the endurance and energy of a hyena, hummingbird, squirrel, and a trained mushing husky all wrapped into one. For us, “endless” exercise was a key for MANAGEMENT. There was no training if we didn’t exercise him three times a day. Two runs per day (up to 10km total) plus some rope play. Without this in the beginning, we would have been unable to train him. We did all this exercise ON TOP OF slow feeders or training for ALL his food. There was no other option. This is not suggesting everyone go out and do this, but if you have an elite athlete, and YOU are an athlete, using exercise to manage the energy until a dog can be more focussed on training, settles in, etc shouldn’t be seen as irresponsible. I wouldn’t take back our choice to run him until he was physically tired because honestly, his mental endurance outweighed his physical by a lot. Tire him physically so that all the training can actually be absorbed. Once he was able to absorb training we slowly phased out the NEED for physical activity. We ended up with a dog who could sleep on the couch all day OR go for an hour run. I don’t think forcing him to train without getting his physical energy out first would have gotten us here. I understand the sentiment, but it didn’t work for us. He needed the biological fulfilment of exercise, it just happened to be what most people consider “endless”. Why does genetic testing matter? I hadn’t really thought this was controversial until I saw someone complaining about “everyone NEEDING to test their dog”. First, just let people be happy and do what they want. It doesn’t affect anyone else. But more importantly, it got me thinking about why we tested Kolo. 1️⃣ Health - without knowing his genetic background, I wanted to know if there was anything I needed to start looking for. Surprisingly, Kolo can back with ZERO variants of concern. This doesn’t mean we are in the clear but it does mean the common health issues linked to known genetics are going to be less likely. 2️⃣ Behaviour - this was the most helpful for us. He was chipped as a Catahoula but anyone could guess he’s either a mix and the breeder lied, or a poorly bred Catahoula. Surprise, we got the mix of breeds that are commonly found in Bull Arabs. That means we most likely have a mix of two boar hunting breeds - intense, bred to corner large game, confrontational, and energetic. Knowing this, we can do two things - change our expectations and change our behaviour. We were more likely to give him certain outlets and fulfilment, running him, playing physical games like tug and wrestling, and also adding scentwork. We were also more satisfied accepting certain things about him that are inherent to his breeds. We know how to accept who he is and know how to give him outlets he needs as hunting breed in the city. And guess what? What is a heart dog? I’ve only ever had one dog. Even growing up we had cats. I love cats - little assholes that pretend not to love you but sometimes they slip up. I’ve never had a dog. It’s been so hard to tell if we have a special connection just because he’s my first dog or because our connection is just truly uniquely us. I think I’m finally leaning towards accepting that I’ll never have a dog like him again. Of course all dogs are different but he will always be the dog that taught me the most, he will be the dog that accomplished the most, and he will be the dog that came the farthest from where he was. Almost exactly three years apart, and they look so similar. But these two dogs can’t be further from different. Kolo today: Healthy 34kg, muscular, athletic and playful. Absolutely amazing with people. Makes new human friends easily as long as they have something to scratch/pat him with and a leg or hip to lean on. He is such a quick learner despite choosing when and where he learns. He is goofy, trusting, cuddly, gentle (kind of), and really tolerant of tiny human craziness. Can make dog friends in the right environment with the right dogs, and when he knows he’s safe, can recall off leash next to another dog doing the same. Lets me examine and brush his teeth, lets the vet check his temperature (🙈) and physically move him to check his overall health. Kolo (aka Hawkeye) circa 2019: A stray dog with very painful gut issues. 24kg and THIN. Hip bones clearly visible. Neurotic. Scared. Brave but anxious. Always alert. Not cuddly and no tolerance for handling of any kind. Pats? Yes but not because he wanted them. Vet checks? Absolutely not, no touchy. Would jump on every human he met but wasn’t really attached to humans. No cuddles, no seeking affection, no seeking play or engagement. Didn’t know sit from stay, and the only reward he considered reinforcing (food) just made him too frustrated to concentrate on learning. NO tolerance for dogs on lead and on walks, even if 5 km away and the only evidence of them was a speck on the horizon. He could play with other dogs in a controlled environment but he was a lot and spiralled when overexcited so we stopped trying until we got some more training. These two dogs are not the same. Someone failed my boy so badly but he bounced back with effort, sweat, and tears (and money and time). Even if we made mistakes, he’s resilient. He’s so incredible! He’s so tolerant, patient, and trusting. We’ve had to start using an electric toothbrush on his back teeth because they build up plaque quite quickly. To avoid anaesthesia for cleaning again, we are keeping them super clean. Of course you can imagine he did NOT like vibration in his mouth at first but he’s gotten so much better. So how the hell did we get here? Honestly, I can’t say for sure but I can name a few things that definitely necessary to get here but I don’t think sufficient on their own. 1️⃣ I made it fun, a game. Everytime I said teeth and he placed his nose in my hand, he got a treat. Then added the “teeth check” before treat. Then added regular toothbrush. Then “touch” with the toothbrush vibrating. Then vibrating toothbrush on his canine tooth, etc. so many steps to break down each thing he might have been worried about but he got applause, “Yaaaaay” and a treat everytime. Now if I get the toothbrush, he runs to his bed ready to start the game. 2️⃣ He’s allowed to opt out at any time. You can see him doing this sometimes in the video. His health always comes first and yes, if it gets bad enough that it could injure/hurt him, we won’t allow opting out. I don’t believe that his comfort comes before his safety. I know many people are made to feel this way but this is a line I refuse to cross. However, if I don’t get this done today, it doesn’t matter, we do it tomorrow. Training with this dog is a challenge sometimes. Maybe not in the way you are thinking, and that’s not to take away from some of the ways he’s incredibly easy to train. He’s incredibly smart, picks things up quickly. He retains things he’s learned day to day. He’s independent and therefore sometimes tries his own things, and if I can capture it correctly, it’s actually the quickest to freeshape IF he offers the behaviour. If he doesn’t he gets frustrated easily and freeshaping ends up being one of the worst ways to train him. This is why i find him easy to train. Now why is he hard to train? 1️⃣ He’s independent so his motivators and rewards can change with a slight shift in the wind. Some days, training is just not going to happen. I COULD, but even the highest motivators would be barely keeping his attention. 2️⃣ His drive his low-medium. About an hour into a session he will just tap out. Again, even the biggest motivators can’t help once he’s tapped out. Don’t get me wrong his energy could still be through the roof, but his drive will disappear. I love him to death though. Sporting our @byronandco bandana for a trip to one of the busiest vet offices. Despite being the only dog that made it VERY clear he needed space from other dogs, Kolo was the only dog to look like he was in control of himself. Despite this warning, the dog owner at the entrance to the waiting room was allowing his dog up to sniff everyone passing. I played the human barrier and lured Kolo by without issue. We played a game of “look at the dog then find the treat” where everytime he looked at the dogs barking at him or staring at him, I threw a treat on the ground so that he could hear it and he’d turn around to find it. After a few minutes he was looking at me and waiting for his treats. Despite being able to make it a positive experience with his breakfast and favourite treats, I still use our head harness. I don’t trust other people, therefore if something goes wrong with their dog, I want full control of mine in a way that won’t choke him or restrict his airway. The vet was so impressed with his behaviour, body composition, general health, and his food focus. They really emphasised how happy they were with how fit he is and I’m so glad we’ve done such a good job not letting him eat himself into obesity.
