“The Boys” Season 2 Review: -Oh my god, this season was amazing. -I have to say, it was eerie to watch this season in 2022 given everything that has happened since. But at the same time, that’s how it works as an excellent satire. These might be the smartest writers working in the biz. They are just laser-focused on everything wrong with our society, and it makes the show better to not just focus on Supes. -The cast all around is absolutely amazing. This truly might be one of the best ensembles on television. -We’ve already heard all the love for the four leads, so I’m gonna highlight two actors that I don’t think get enough credit: Karen Fukuhara and Dominique McElligott. Both of their roles are very tough to pull off, and they always nail it. I need to see more love for them. -And of course, Aya Cash was incredible as Stormfront. Literally the perfect villain for 2020 and beyond. A masterclass in how someone can use charisma and choice language to mask pure evil as something good. Outstanding. -In fact, the writers and cast did a great job fleshing out the world. In Season 1, there were only a few characters we actually knew and cared about. After this season, I love almost everyone. Hell, Kimiko might be my favorite character. Excellent work all around. -The action was top-notch. All the fights were incredible. Truly so exciting to watch. -Y’all, the violence and black humor in this show is too much. But I also kind of love it. Screw it, keep blowing up all the heads! -One of my few gripes: there was no reason for Becca to die. Can we stop killing off women to advance men’s stories? -I’m familiar with the comics. And I’m sorry, this show is better. By tying in satire of both capitalism and nationalism, the show is richer and more profound than its source material ever really was. This show has found the balance I wish it had in Season 1. It came back bigger in every regard, but found the line between funny violence, biting satire, and emotional drama. All of which was elevated by a phenomenal cast and some really smart writers. “The Boys” Season 1 Review: -Whew, man, I had a lot of fun with this one. -This show’s biggest strength is its cast. Everyone is so good in their respective roles, and I’ve come to care about a lot of the characters already. Karl Urban is perfect as Butcher, Jack Quaid perfectly balanced the tragedy and humor of his role, and Erin Moriarty navigates a pretty tough role really well. But of course, Antony Starr is the standout: his Homelander is really scary. Props all around. -The show clearly had ideas about capitalistic greed among the corporations from the jump. As far as I gathered from the comics I read, their take was never much more than, “If people had powers, they would be jerks.” But the show seems interested in exploring WHY these people became jerks, and that has the potential to lead to some fascinating cultural dialogue. -It’s gloriously violent. I’m familiar with the comics, so I knew to expect that. But I was impressed with how much they committed to adapting Ennis’s viciousness. -It’s also VERY cynical. While it looks fun on the surface because of all the wacky stuff that occurs, this is a show that seems to ultimately believe power can only corrupt. Starlight is the one character trying her damndest to not be like the others, which means she’s the only thing that kind of keeps it from spiraling into darkness. All the moments I fist-bumped and cheered belonged to her. -I’m kind of sad this is the only season with Elisabeth Shue. I thought she was excellent as Stillwell, and a really effective foil to almost every character. I’ll definitely miss her in the rest of the series. In short, it was fine and I enjoyed it. It’s a great deconstruction of the superhero myth, and the cast is great. I just hope the show isn’t planning on coasting on violence and quips (despite being super fun!), because I found the character studies and commentary much more enjoyable. The Boys Season 2 upped the ante on every aspect. More gore, more violence, more supes, more outrageous scenes. The premise of the show revolves around a world where superheroes live among us... but some aren’t as heroic as they seem. Vigilantes who have been personally affected the the superheroes’ actions vow to stop them. Who wins though? I adored this season, and Aya Cash as Stormfront was a badass addition. I enjoyed each episode and adored the inclusion of Billy Joel songs as a story arc. There are some warm beats, some sad ones, and some shocking moments. Just be warned, even though this is about superheroes, it’s definitely NOT for kids or families. This is strictly adult material. If you can handle it, give it a watch. Update about season three for Amazon Prime’s fan fave and beloved, smash hit anti-hero digital show, “The Boys”. comicbook.com alleges that in accordance to The Illuminerdi, season 3’s first new addition to the show in the form of Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy will receive a slight retcon come his show’s origin where, rather than using his original comic book own, the show will now have it that there only ever being the one superhero known as Soldier Boy, and it will play out similar to Marvel Comics’ own Captain America. However, where it will differ from Marvel’s patriotic superhero is that Vought’s at one point will say their hero died during a mission in WW II, but the truth is he's actually still alive as the The Seven slowly uncover throughout the course of the season. Then there's the new anti-hero who’s *not* from the comics created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, but created solely for their show in the form of one Supersonic. He’s alleged to be the ex-boyfriend of superhero Starlight, and will serve as an emotional wrench Starlight will have to deal with as she continues to search out a relationship with Hughie. Supersonic is alleged to appear in three to four episodes, otherwise at least half the season (no information on how many exact episodes Soldier Boy’s appearances will be for though). Days before the second season of The Boys aired on Amazon Prime, the show was officially greenlit for a third season. Since then, a spin-off show has been ordered (of which I’m still in midsts of trying to learn all about). Currently, The Boys season 2 is airing new episodes every Friday on Amazon Prime. Jensen Ackles has officially been cast as the superhero Soldier Boy in season 3 of Amazon Prime’s beloved and fan fave smash hit digital show, “The Boys”. The announcement was made on The Boys official Instagram account, in a cryptic video starring Ackles as he read an issue of The Boys comic book. The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke elsewhere issued the following official statement, “When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream — to provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employment," Continuing with. "I’m happy to say that dream has come true. Jensen is an amazing actor, an even better person, smells like warm chocolate chip cookies, and I consider him a brother.” Kripke then added, “As Soldier Boy, the very first Superhero, he’ll bring so much humor, pathos and danger to the role. I can’t wait to be on set with him again, and bring a bit of Supernatural to The Boys." Amazon Prime Videos’ beloved, smash hit, digital show “The Boys” allegedly adding Soldier Boy to season 3. Leaked audition tapes for David S. Lee and Noah Bean are currently going around the internet, allegedly both intended specifically for the comic book adapted to live-action digital show’s incarnation of its Soldier Boy. Dynamite Entertainment’s The Boys by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s character Soldier Boy is actually a parody of Marvel Comic’s own superhero Captain America, only he’s easily frightened and weak willed. It isn’t until issue Nº 53 that the readers learn there was actually another Soilder Boy originating from World War II prior to the present welder of the mantle. The first Soldier Boy was introduced to the young commander Greg Mallory as leader of The Avenging Squad. Because of Soldier Boy I’s stupidity and lack of training, both Mallory's soldiers and the Avenging Squad get killed by Germans, Mallory himself is the sole survivor of the incident. When he finds the severely wounded Soldier Boy I, who's begging for help, Mallory kills him with a grenade in cold blood. From the way the audition tapes sounded, it looks like the show’s incarnation of Soldier Boy may be the exact one from World War II himself and not the present bearer of the mantle from the comics as the audition tapes reveal the character is extremely long lived and near immortal. The Boys season 2 is allegedly set to debut in the next couple months, while season 3 was officially green-lit a few weeks ago. What did you all think?
