:: Love Gush :: I’ve been finding my voice, dialling in my sound and claiming my space as a self-produced female artist. I’ve been leaning into conversations led by women in music and feeling a great big surge of empowerment in sharing our stories and learning from one another. Female power is freakin cool and exciting and immensely innovative. And, while all of this is true I would be remiss not to share this: energetic polarity and relational support is key! 🔑 • Here, on the cusp of 34, I can say that I am married to a man who is my greatest teacher, partner and best friend. The medicine this man carries and offers my life is ancient, distilled and potent. At times, it is bitter, like all good medicine is. At times, I resist it. His teachings ask me to straighten my spine, wipe the haze from my eyes and see with absolute clarity. He is strong, focused, determined, wildly capable and walks with a deeply rooted empowerment of Being and Trust of Spirit. And yet, his tenderness astounds me. He can put his hand on my back, when I’m in tears on my yoga mat, and whisper “Let it come out” in just such a way that soothes my trembling heart and gives space for the fullness of my grief. He can hold all of me. He listens with discernment when I come to him with the tangle of a situation. As I seek a solution he will ask the most practical and honest questions that pop me right back into my own knowing and truth. Rafael has been instrumental in the culmination of this album. His support of listening, and nudges towards my most authentic path have been a guiding light in this journey of the “Becoming” album. It is with humility that I say that this album came together 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 him. Today is BC Book Day, and I am headed to the BC Legislature in Victoria, as I was invited to attend the Publishers and Magazines Roundtable as part of Creative Industries week. I was invited because I’ve been a bit of a squeaky wheel in regards to the fact that BC magazines get next to no provincial funding, “woefully underfunded compared to other cultural industries.” I say squeaky wheel because this is not my wheelhouse and not an area I’d normally find myself in—I’m not good at this lingo—I’m just a little hobbit. It was my mom who alerted me to the lack of funding and became disgruntled about it pretty quickly. I have since followed suit, especially because it’s become clear how the folks I’ve been talking to act like we do get funding by highlighting the $70,000-ish BC magazines get (which mainly goes to run BC Mags, who provides pro-d resources). Ontario gets $2 million, and Alberta gets $400,000 (from a lot of lobbying) - which doesnt include funding the Alberta Magazine Publishing Association. So this year we’ve been invited to the BC Roundtable with other book and magazine publishers, as well as the Honourable Lana Popham, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport to chat about whats working and what’s not. I’ve sent loads of emails and had many meetings with various people already, and it’s clear it will take a lot of work on my own part (with allll the time I have, ya know) to lobby for more provincial funding, at least in line with BC film, events/music, and sports. Excerpts from Kim’s FOLKLIFE pieces: Aunt Miriam’s Bosom “At a large family reunion held at a cousin’s house, everyone was milling about—arranging chairs, putting out plates, dishing up food—when someone needed a pen. “Anyone have a pen?” a helpful uncle hollered across the potato salad. Over by the window in a recliner, Aunt Miriam sat up. “I’m pretty sure I’ve got one here,” she said. And then she reached into the space between her ample bosom. But what she pulled out was a toothbrush. “Nope,” she said, reaching in again. This time, out came a pair of sewing scissors. The third try produced metal tweezers. I’m pretty sure I’m too old for him, but I can’t tell how old anyone is anymore. Age seems to matter less these days. Last spring, a 27-year-old guy tried to kiss me. We were in a park discussing nettle foraging when, suddenly, he tilted his head and leaned in like a teenage heartthrob in an ’80s movie. I was so taken aback that I laughed and shouted “no!” then felt terrible. That same week, Ed, the 72-year-old who taught me to two-step at the local pub, emailed to suggest we fool around. I wrote back to say that, while I enjoyed dancing, I didn’t think of him in that way. We haven’t two-stepped since.”

When opportunity knocks, it often breaks down the door. This was the case for guidebook author Taryn Eyton when she faced the moment of truth to turn her passion-project side hustle into her full-time job. After building a career with a major outdoor brand, corporate restructuring forced her to reinterview for her position, despite her years of service. Now most folks here would, after a period of very reasonable outrage, proceed as instructed and hope for the best. But Taryn opted to cash-out and go all-in on her dream job – becoming a guidebook author for hiking and backpacking trips across BC. Now a full-time writer and hiker, her curiosity, tenacity, and belief in herself has served her well. Her website, happiestoutdoors.ca, is a thoroughly researched reference point for anyone looking to learn how to be comfortable in the backcountry, covering everything from expected topics like packing lists and trip reports, to underrepresented topics like menstruation in bear country (spoiler alert: it’s fine). She’s published two guidebooks, Backpacking in Southwestern British Columbia (2021, Greystone), followed by Backpacking on Vancouver Island (2024, Greystone). This latest book, just released on April 2, has something for everyone, including backpacking trips of varying lengths and difficulties, and even a good number of day hikes. Through her dedication, Taryn has built a large and loyal following, and for good reason. The topics she chooses to cover and her no-bs approach to accessible adventure empowers and inspires everyone to reconsider their limiting beliefs.
