“Black the walls, black the dogs, and black the hearts in black Diyarbakır,” an old Arab saying goes. . Diyarbakır, or 'Amed' as its ancient Kurdish name, welcomed me with its black-basalt architecture on my survey trip for my Kurdistan project in the winter of 2018. Its historical significance struck me, as its old town, encircled by massive Roman walls, stood as a testament to its past. . However, I was also confronted with the scars of Amed's recent history. The violent clash between the Turkish forces and Kurdish separatist groups in 2015 and 2016 had left its mark, with large parts of the historic town being utterly destroyed. After the conflict, the Turkish government demolished and replaced the ruined buildings and monuments with modern structures. The old quarter looked like an urbanized old town. . But what truly brings this 'black' city to life is its people and rich cultural tapestry, vibrant and diverse. The Kurds, for instance, celebrate Nowruz, a joyous festival marking the beginning of spring and their New Year. The Turkish government once banned this festival until 2003. Syrian Orthodox families, deeply rooted in their faith, attend services at the third-century Church of the Virgin Mary (Meryamana Kilisesi), one of the world's oldest churches. In a scene of everyday life, men play cards with their friends at teashops after the Friday prayer at Ulu Cami, the oldest mosque in Anatolia. . This diverse mix of traditions and faiths adds vivid colors to the city of black stones. .
